SHAZAM Director David F. Sandberg Reveals How The DC Film's Logo Came About

Marketing for Shazam, starring Asher Angel and Zachary Levi, is beginning to ramp up with Entertainment Weekly's live set report scheduled for later today. Meanwhile, Aquaman actually comes out first....

It seems that logo for the DC Film Universe's Shazam movie has actually been around for a number of months (or at least a prototype). It turns out David F. Sandberg made a logo for his pitch to WB and the studio's marketing department decided to base their design on that particular version.

Shazam (stylized Shazam!) is scheduled for release on April 05, 2019. James Wan and Jason Momoa's Aquaman is slated to hit theaters this December. However, there's been relatively little to no promotion for the film, despite the latter having the closer release date.

There are rumors swirling on social media that the first footage from the film will quickly follow today's live set-visit report from Entertainment Weekly.

Lol. The director made a logo on Blender for presentations and stuff. That's what the official logo is based on? Jesus Christ. It looks like it. It looks more in line with the CW Arrow shows.

Couldn't pizzazz it up a bit? Couldn't make the Z look like a lightning bolt?

@Kevwebsz - I thought about that, but the bolt is mimicking the suit's logo, and you'd probably not want to mess with it too much.

The best bet might be to "sink" the Z into the bolt (kind of like the S in Superman's shield) and have the crackling energy glow around it. The kerning around the Z might get complicated because it would be easy to crowd the symbol and tempting to space out every letter.

Another option is to just do the bolt as the exclamation point. That's a bit more tried and true, I think.

I already know Aquaman is a lost cause due to among many things Jason Mamoa not being lead role material, he is not as good of an actor as he and his fans think. He wasn’t good in JL and give Frontier a watch to see how truly bland he is. But Shazam, I dunno why but there’s something that has me cautiously optimistic about it. I can’t put my finger on it but I don’t think it’s going to be as terrible as people think. Worse case scenario I think it’ll just be mediocre.

Well... yeah. It looks like it. I thought it may have even been something knocked out by the magazine just to fill the gap.

But doesn't this mean that "us haters" were right to say that it looked cheap and generic and that it needed another pass (on the off chance that this was intended as a final or near-final design)? Sure, some went overboard, but isn't that less embarrassing than being one of those people that went to mat defending what always looked like an hour and a half in photoshop by a non-graphic designer?

I say this as a non-graphic designer myself who has knocked out a lot of crap in photoshop in an hour and a half. It's not an insult, it's just not up to the standard of what these productions should be striving toward.

@Spock0Clock - It looks fan-made, and honestly looks like a throwback to 90s or 00s superhero logos. Which, if that's what they're going for because the film takes place during that era, ok. Either way, just like the suit, it's ugly.

Im sad. There was an amazing piece of graffiti art with Shazam and they painted over it with bland gray paint
