SHAZAM Director Describes The Film's Comedy As Coming "More From The Situations Rather Than Quippy One-Liners"

The director of SHAZAM, David F. Sandberg, recently commented in a Reddit thread which speculated how comedic his movie would be. Here's what he had to say!

To many fans' delight, but most's dismay; Humour in the DC Extended Universe has been few and far between thus far. And because of this, many will be glad to hear what Shazam director, David F. Sandberg, has to say about the tone of his movie.

He recently payed a visit to a Reddit thead, which was entitled the question it posed: So, is it safe to say that Shazam! will probably be the DCEU's first comedic movie? And provided them with their answer.

Here's what Sandberg had to say about Shazam's humour:

I think it's very funny but the humor comes more from the situations rather than quippy one-liners (for people who read too much into things, that's not intended as a dig at Marvel or anyone in particular. Quippy one-liners can be great).

The important thing for me is to mix the funny with a threat that's serious and to also have dramatic moments. All funny all the time takes the weight out of it.

This, more or less, provides us with an idea of what to expect from the tone of the movie; That being more inline with the comics of which it is based on as well as other comic book movie cinematic universes, namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which David is careful not take a jab at.

What do you think about David's comments? Would you have preferred a darker take on the character or are you pleased with the direction it's taking?

Stop giving "quippy one liners" more power than they ought to have. Like many differing tropes of films, they work sometimes, and other times they don't.

Maybe just write a good script instead of dictating that it is or isn't going to be funny in some specific way.

Hopefully this means the story will take more influence from before the New 52, because I feel like the New 52 version of Shazam takes its self to seriously.

I'm really hoping this movie will be great, because I really believe if WB respects Captain Marvel/Shazam then WB will have a huge success on their hands. Because what kid wouldn't have loved to turn into a superhero? So my fingers are crossed and wishing for the best.

I can almost 99% guarantee trolls will use this to mock the MCU.

It's crazy this masterpiece has plenty of lol moments, yet no one dares to call it a comedy

@RealSpiderMan - Spiderman 2 is one of the charmingly funniest superhero films ever.

I think some of its humor is cheesy as [frick], but what works is funny. At least for me.

@BlackBeltJones - Spiderman 2 is full of 60's comic book cheesiness i think its the only Comic Book Movie to get away with that(maybe Thor Ragnarok but Spiderman 2 is also full of drama)

@auditore - oh no doubt. Full on drama. But its got that 60s cheese in spades too.

It balances it pretty well for the most part. It's one of the great classic examples that a dramatic superhero tale can funny and tense.

It's a shame some people need their hands held with every comment that gets made.

I find the problem with MCU's comedy is that a lot of times either the jokes are not funny

or misused in scenes where shit needs to get serious

or go on for too long with characters shouting at each other face in an annoying manner (GOTG 1 & 2)

@RealSpiderMan - I actually think the MCU does a really fantastic job with their humor. The only films I can think of where the humor didn't quite hit the mark was GOTG vol 2 (which had lots of really funny lines and scenes but some that weren't) and Spiderman Homecoming. So I'd say that them having issues with humor is a small minority of the time.

@RealSpiderMan - Have to agree here, especially with the first pic. I'm beginning to appreciate GotG Vol 2 more these days but the humour wasn't good at all. The Drax stuff was terrible. James Gunn completely forgot what made the character funny in the first film was how he took things too literally and spoke all properly.

I laughed at "Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it" and not "Did you make a penis?"

@HeavyMetal4Life - GotG Vol 2 is the only one I've watched so far that just made me go "Okay that's enough"

But the third act makes up a lot for it IMO

@BlindWedjat - Yeah, I totally agree. I had no issues with the humor in the first film, it was excellent and part of the reason why that film is so great. And upon first viewing of Vol 2, I didn't have any big issues with the humor because I think I was just in movie enjoyment mode. But I recently rewatched that film and some of the humor definitely did not stick. Sometimes I think humor might sound better on a script than on screen. 3rd act is great though.
