Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now available on Digital platforms, and that means DC Comics fans have been given the opportunity to look through the sequel with a fine-tooth comb.
In terms of Easter Eggs, the Shazam! follow-up is somewhat lacking, no massive shock given the DCEU's lack of connectivity in recent years. It appears efforts were also made to ensure the franchise could be folded into DC Studios' DCU should James Gunn and Peter Safran choose to do so, though that seems doubtful after the movie's dismal critical and commercial performance.
There was no cutting Gal Gadot's Diana Prince (even after Wonder Woman 3 fell apart), and along with that memorable cameo appearance, she appears on various newspaper clippings.
However, it's been pointed out that those are recycled stills from 2017's Wonder Woman, creating something of a strange continuity error. After all, that's a shot of the hero way back in 1917 when the world didn't know of her existence...the quality and composition similarly make no sense, especially as Diana was stepping out into No Man's Land.
Does this really matter? Probably not. Movies often reuse stills or publicity shots, but for anyone that pays attention, it's often considered a lazy approach to set dressing that stands out like a sore thumb.
In Shazam! Fury of the Gods' case, this was in the background of a scene and is something that's only now been picked up on. Still, it's not a great example of attention to detail in a genre where fans are constantly on the lookout for Easter Eggs, references, and mistakes.
As noted, the movie flopped and is expected to bring an end to Zachary Levi's time as the Big Red Cheese unless he gets another shot in the DCU much further down the line.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrived on Digital earlier this month. The sequel will then hit 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday, May 23.
