If you haven't seen Shazam! Fury of the Gods yet, major spoilers follow.
In the first Shazam! movie, Superman shows up to visit Freddy Freeman at school, but the character is only shown from the chest down. Fans thought they were going to get another headless cameo from a fellow Justice Leaguer when we learned that "Fake Wonder Woman" was part of the film, but Gal Gadot did appear as the real Diana towards the end of the film.
After Shazam gives his life to save the city, Wonder Woman responds to a letter he sent her earlier in the movie, arriving on the scene to repair the Wizard's staff and resurrect the fallen hero.
Director David F. Sandberg has now revealed that he did have a backup plan if Gadot couldn't shoot the scene, but he wasn't particularly interested in using it!
"I don’t remember exactly how it came about, but we wanted a real cameo this time. Henry Cavill was supposed to be in the first one and that didn’t work out," he tells Total Film. "When we had her in the script, I still didn’t believe it. What happened in the first one with Cavill was when we shot the scene they said he can’t be here for the scene, we’ll shoot it with a stand-in and pick up the pieces later on. But that didn’t happen."
"On this one, it was the same thing. Oh, Gal is not going to be able to come here, shoot with a stand-in, figure out what pieces we need and pick up her pieces. I was like, ‘yeah, sure’."
If Diana wasn't going to factor in, Sandberg toyed with the idea of bringing Helen Mirren's Hespera back to take her place, but admits that it would have been a "lame" idea.
