SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Director On Disappointing Box Office Performance: "I Saw Where This Was Heading"

Projections for Shazam! Fury of the Gods' box office run are not particularly hopeful, and director David F. Sandberg has now weighed in on his sequel's slim chances of success...

By MarkCassidy - Mar 18, 2023 02:03 PM EST

Long-range projections for Shazam! Fury of the Gods were never what you'd call encouraging, but the DC Comics sequel now looks set to make even less than originally predicted.

Based on Friday's takings, the movie is expected to finish the weekend with $30 million domestic. Overseas earnings should be a little better, but unless Fury of the Gods proves to have surprisingly strong legs, the studio may have another flop on its hands.

Director David F. Sandberg was tagged in a Reddit thread about the film's underwhelming opening weekend, and responded with the following.

"No worries. It’s not like this comes as a surprise. I saw where this was heading a long time ago. I’ll be alright though. I got paid all my money upfront."

A very interesting response, for sure. It sounds like Sandberg, for whatever reason, always had an inkling that the movie wasn't going to perform very well at the box office.

Star Zachary Levi also commented on Shazam! 2's debut, and the possibility of a third movie being developed in the DCU.

What do you guys make of Sandberg's comments? Have you been to see Shazam! yet? If so, what did you think?

I never thought Levi was a big enough name or charismatic enough to lead this franchise. BO numbers don’t really surprise me. Maybe if The Rock’s head wasn’t so massive we could’ve had Shazam vs Black Adam in this one.

@BreakTheCode - The irony is that the Rock said "The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change." And he was right. WB allowed this circus to go on for too long and the moment Dwayne Johnson came on board after DC found some platform with Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam, They gave Dwayne a platform to destroy what they were struggling to maintain.

@BreakTheCode - I Think Levi was plently charismatic and did just fine. As for his name, I think the first Shazam really should have launched him, but he didn't follow the Hemsworth path and kept low key, or just didnt get the bigger roles he went after.

Judging from the camrip I just watched the movie isn't terrible and kept some of the heart from the first one but yeah even wonder woman couldn't save this. Its funny because it looks set to finish before it even gets started...

Also I can kind of see the complaint from some fan bots about Gunn putting his wife in these movies 🤣

@UniqNo - Wonder Woman can’t save anything because everyone is still recovering from the disguising taste they got with WW84. That was a franchise killer (even DCEU killer).

I love Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, but that movie was atrocious in every way. I imagine people wouldn’t care anymore after that, not even about Gal.

@BreakTheCode -
It's more the film being fairly standalone coupled with James Gunn self-sabotaging the entire DCEU by stating these films were irrelevant when the marketing was starting up. Such a moronic move from James Gunn effectively means nobody is really going to watch any of the films, what's the point when the Ezra Miller movie is going to reboot all of it?

It'd be like Kevin Feige directly coming out and saying "Secret Wars is a full reboot and you don't need to see anything prior" rather than just being an implied potential partial or full reboot.

As for the film itself, personally the appeal of the first was the juxtaposition of Billy and his alter ego. They aged up Billy and they removed the sense of him as a solitary hero by throwing in the Shazam family. In addition any appeal from him not being a solitary hero, e.g. a Shazam & Superman team-up movie or a Shazam & Superman Vs Black Adam movie that was teased fell apart when Cavill was let go in another moronic move from James Gunn.

It's incredibly difficult for the sequel to have ever had a chance because it's up against the person in charge of the franchise self-sabotaging it in every way he possibly can.

@colonel179 - I'm probably in the minority here but I didn't mind WW84. It doesn't top the 1st as that was a really well done origin tale (3rd act aside) but Pedro Pascal and some of the fight choreography were quite entertaining.

@BreakTheCode - John Cena was born for this role, and he was interested in it...freaking Dwayne Johnson and ego.

Story quality aside, I think they picked the wrong time of year to release both this film and the first film. These are family movies. They should have released this around the holidays. Such an odd choice that I think hurt this franchise more than any other reasonS

@DerekLake - It was originally suppose to, but opposite Avatar 2.

To be honest I think it would have done just fine along side it as a good alternative. It may not have gotten to number 1, but it would probably stuck in the top 5 for longer than its looking to now.

@DerekLake - the first film was a Christmas movie, I never understood that April reléase...

@DerekLake - for a lot of the country this was a holiday season. It's spring break for many kids.

@GeneralChaos - That’s not really a holiday, but sure. Although, spring break is what, a week generally? I’m just saying that the first one was a Christmas movie released at an odd time sandwiched between other films, and this one seems to have released at an odd time as well, compared to a window when it could get max viewings.
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 3/19/2023, 9:35 PM
@DerekLake - They knew it wasn't strong enough of a film to release during the holidays. That's why they dumped it in March. They knew it wasn't good enough for the summer or holiday movie seasons.

"I got paid all my money upfront" just comes off as "IDGAF, as long as I got paid", unless I'm reading too much into that.
It just seems like an odd response to a flop, at least publicly.
