Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi has shared his take on the DCU's future with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge, revealing his hopes for the magically charged hero as the franchise evolves.

Shazam! wasn't a $1 billion hit, but it received positive reviews (a rarity for a DCEU movie) and was still a financial success. Next year will see the release of a sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but what the future holds in store for the hero beyond that is hard to say.

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are in the midst of putting together a new 8-10 year slate for the DCU, and there's still no official word on whether actors and characters from the DCEU will carry over.

Safran produced the Shazam! movies, of course, so we'd bet on there being future plans for the magically charged hero!

During a recent convention appearance, Zachary Levi weighed in on his possible future in the DCU and seems optimistic that there could be plans for Shazam moving forward. "I'm sure most of you know who James Gunn is, because he’s made all kinds of incredible movies and television shows, like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and stuff," the actor started.

"So he’s one of my bosses now, which is dope. Also, he’s a friend of mine, so that makes him even cooler. And then Peter Safran, who is his partner, is my producer - he produces the movie Shazam!. So your question is, 'If those are my two bosses, is there a plan and a future for Shazam?'"

"I would say 'Yeah, I would hope so. I would hope so,'" Levi continues. "Because those are my friends, and if they don’t have a plan, then they are not my friends anymore. No, sir."

Asher Angel, who plays Billy Batson, also recently weighed in on the DCU's future, and you can find his comments in the player below. As noted, we'd hazard a guess that Shazam will be sticking around, and that Dwayne Johnson will have no other choice than to accept that he'll only get the chance to return as Black Adam if it's in some sort of crossover.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on March 17, 2023.

"Even though Shazam grossed barely 400mil, it got a sequel", that's Probably Rock's next arguement Reviews are more favoured there though. compared to his effort.

I would think Levi's safe though. If not for any more solo's then definitley an ensemble.

@UniqNo - I think he’s safe because he brings the comedy relief that meshes with Gunn’s style in an ensemble movie.

They killed the franchise when they took years to make a sequel. Those “kids” ain’t looking like no kids no more.

@PlusUltra - They should have shot the first two movies back to back.

I do wanna see Levi return as Shazam, just I would like to see Cavill, Gadot and Mamoa one more time as their characters.

I wonder if it'll happen though. I wouldn't mind a Justice League vs Suicide Squad or Injustice League movie though. Great way to get all faces (heroes and villains) to return one more time.

I feel like in the coming years Levi’s about to learn the difference between personal life/friends/social status and his buddies running a multi million/billion dollar business. Better cross those fingers for Shazam’s next movie.

Gonna be a lot of sweet talking from the current actors until Gunn reveals his roadmap (including Gal Gadot's tweet the day before the THR story came out, which in hindsight was clearly planned. She definitely heard she might be recast which is why she did it).

Cavill's "the next movie will really make you FEEL like Superman" comments will have been for nothing.

The CBM shine has just about worn off - too much assembly line CGI bullshit and we're quickly coming back around to the pre X-Men world of 'CBMs are dumb and made for kids'

Black Adam was a C+ film and a nail in the coffin of these fringe (to the gen pop) IPs getting $150M+ for a movie.

Love and Thunder did more damage than good - so many of my non nerd friends were 'WTF was that' and the odds of them going to Marvel movies just because they're Marvel movies has diminished greatly.

Wakanda Forever will probably be seen as a wee spike before the final crash - it's over hyped and will make about half as much as the first film - totally against the Marvel trend for solo movies.

The accountants will take the wheel and the faucet will be turned WAY down - they could've made THREE Jokers for the cost of one Black Adam from the standpoint of a bean counter.

Shazam was a B- and I don't think I've watched it all the way through one time since the theater and I'm lukewarm at best on the sequel and I was a kid raised on the Winnebago on Saturday morning.
