SPIDER-MAN 4 Receives Another Promising Update From Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman

Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman shares some updates on the future of the Spider-Man franchise, as well as news on how the studio's own Marvel movies, Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, are progressing.

During Spider-Man: No Way Home's press tour, Tom Holland talked repeatedly about potentially saying goodbye to Peter Parker. We're pretty sure all of that was a public negotiating tactic to secure a massive new deal for another trilogy, though the franchise's future is somewhat in doubt (the hope is that Sony Pictures will continue working with Marvel Studios, but nothing has been confirmed).

Talking to Deadline, Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman was asked about the wall-crawler's future, confirming that "We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie."

Asked specifically by the trade whether director Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland and Zendaya will return in that fourth chapter, the executive seems optimistic that they will be back. "That whole group, we hope. Then there are movies I would call adjunct to the Spider-Man universe," Rothman added. "That’s Kraven, which we’re shooting now, and Madam Web, which we’ll start in the spring with S.J. Clarkson directing. And then there are many Marvel characters that are standalone."

Watts was supposed to take the helm of Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios, but decided to take a break from the MCU. Now, he's moving on to a Galaxy Far, Far Away for a Star Wars Disney+ series he's created, so time will tell whether he decides to revisit Peter Parker's story down the line.

Unfortunately, we don't anticipate seeing Spider-Man 4 in 2023 (the previous movies have all been released two years apart), though there's probably a decent chance it will hit theaters in 2024.

Spider-Man 4? Post Reed Richard's existence. Possible Johnny Storm friendship. Black Cat introduction. Daredevil rooftop advice. There's so much good that can happen here. NWH left a great conclusion for the next chapter.

@VictorAlonzo - i don't know man, better keep the cameos to a bare minimum, maybe have Johnny as one of Peter's college buddy and brag about his Smart brother in law

@VictorAlonzo - The F4 in Spider-Man 4 would be perfect. Now that's he's basically starting anew in the MCU, he's gonna need new friends. New family. And what better family could he have over the First Family?

@VictorAlonzo - We dont know if Spiderman will remain in the MCU.

Drace24 - 5/21/2022, 11:25 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Not even Sony would be stupid enough to pull the plug now, after the massive success of NWH and the complete disaster of Morbius.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/21/2022, 11:29 AM
@Drace24 - ...are you sure about that? there are no movies left in the deal for Spiderman to be in a Marvel Studios movie, there are also no movies left in Holland's contract, NWH ended with the perfect set-up for a soft-reboot, and Tom Holland is the one who ruined X-Men Origins, and then because of his own stupidity, cancel all the spin-offs people were demanding, including the Deadpool movie.

I think they are about to let Tom Holland go.
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/21/2022, 12:54 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - And yet they are actively talking about Spider-Man 4 with Marvel and Tom Holland. Tey did not announce an end to the partnership with Marvel, like we know they would, because they did so before. And they specifically decided to NOT end NWH with a universe-jump that would have easily explained Spider-Man leaving the MCU. All signs seem to point towards a continued partnership between Marvel and Sony.

Also...

"and Tom Holland is the one who ruined X-Men Origins, and then because of his own stupidity, cancel all the spin-offs people were demanding, including the Deadpool movie."

...I'm sorry what?

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/21/2022, 1:10 PM
@BigPhilbowski @Drace24 - The other Tom, the one in charge of Sony.
Although I like the idea of an evil 10 years old Tom Holland in charge of the X-Men franchise.

They didnt announce a new deal (yet), and rumour is Tom Holland hasnt sign a new contract because Sony is not willing to pay him what he wants (which is an understable ammount, considering his career is ending if he plays the character another 6 years, like he openly stated a few months ago).

The ending of NWH puts Peter in a world where next movies can easily exist outside the MCU; no one know who he is, and his connections to all MCU characters are lost.

Btw, I'm starting to realise him being name-droped in MoM might have been the "Marvel Studios collaboration" that was left in the new deal they signed in 2019.

@TheHumanSpider2 - funny you'd mention Tom Holland Sr! I just found out he existed about 48 hrs ago. Oddly enough, watching an episode of Tales from the Crypt featuring (digging deeper into the 🐇 🕳) Patricia Arquette! Why is that a big deal? I only watched the episode due to a nod from a Nando vs Movies suggestion to watch Severance, which features Patricia Arquette!!! 🤯...
I digress... Disney would buy Sony before they fully allow them to mess up the franchise. Even if the other films score big (which is a hail mary), I think Disney's ownership of Sony is inevitable...

@TheHumanSpider2 - new contracts can always be signed.
eagc1995
eagc1995 - 5/21/2022, 4:01 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Spider-Man is still scheduled to appear in one more MCU film, the current Disney/Sony deal is for 2 films, No Way Home and an Disney MCU film.

So while Tom is not under contract, Disney and Sony are still under contract to use the character in 1 final film
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/21/2022, 4:39 PM
@VictorAlonzo - Sony OWNS the live action rights for Spiderman, they can do porn parodies of him if they wanted to...about Disney buying Sony, no, they already own more than enough.

@originalmrphil - Obviously, but it isnt the case. Yet.

@eagc1995 - Yup, NWH was the solo movie, and Disney can use him in one of their movies...think is, what if the name-drop in MoM counted as that?
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/21/2022, 4:47 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Kevin Feige has already confirmed last december that Spider-Man 4 is in active development.

And I just don't understand your argument regarding the ending of NWH. It specifically does NOT put him into a different world. Even though they had the perfect opportunity to plug him into their Venomverse, they did not do it. Which to me is the best indicator that for now they are very much interested in keeping him in the MCU.

You don't need a deal to name-drop Spider-Man anywhere. And I highly doubt Marvel would waste an open apperance in a crossover event on a throwaway line.

Drace24
Drace24 - 5/21/2022, 4:55 PM
@VictorAlonzo - I highly doubt Disney will purchase Sony anytime soon. In contrast to popular belief, Disney is not hijacking all the companies in hostile takeovers. All the companies they bought have either gone bankrupt (Marvel, Pixar) or wanted to sell anyway (LucasFilm, Fox) and would have otherwise disapeared. Sony does not seem anywhere close to that. Sony is MASSIVE. I don't think even Disney can afford to casually purchase a company like Sony just to get their hands on Spider-Man.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/21/2022, 5:13 PM
@Drace24 - Its not Feige's call to say if the movie is in development or not, and if it is, who is playing Peter with Holland not having a contract yet???

I didnt say the ending of NWH puts him in a different world, but with everyone forgeting who Peter is, May dead, and no connections to the Avengers, all looks like the perfect set-up for a soft reboot, or even a full reboot, which would make sense after how Sony [frick]ed up with Amazing 2 ending on a cliffhanger.
Spiderman 3 also ended on a perfect point to end the story, because Sony was already planning a reboot in case Raimi wanted to keep making those movies that expensive.

About the name drop, it doesnt make any sense, but nothing Sony does makes sense, I can see their legal department telling Disney "you know, you mentioned my property in one of your movies, so, we are legally done".

You expect smart moves from a studio that just made THIS?

Drace24
Drace24 - 5/21/2022, 6:05 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - ...I'm sorry, what? So you rather believe some rumour over head honcho Kevin Feige outright stating that the movie he is producing is in active development?

"I didnt say the ending of NWH puts him in a different world"

I mean, you literally did actually, but okay. This is shaping up to be one of those conversations.

"all looks like the perfect set-up for a soft reboot"

No, all looks perfect for Spider-Man continuing to exist in the MCU. Because that is what happened in the end.
You need to explain to me why they wouldn't have just used the climax of No Way Home, that literally opened up rifts into different universes, to actually plant him into their Venomverse. Wouldn't that be much... smarter?

Also why would Sony even want to soft-reboot? I mean, they own the franchise. They can freely use MJ and Ned and May. Why writing them out of the story then? All the MCU heroes still remember Spider-Man. So, it's not at all a divorce.

"About the name drop, it doesnt make any sense, but nothing Sony does makes sense".

...How does the name-drop not make much sense? Everyone can name-drop Spider-Man anywhere. That's not what copyright works. Right now you are not making much sense.

"I can see their legal department telling Disney "you know, you mentioned my property in one of your movies, so, we are legally done"."

And I can see Sony NOT going "Hey, Kevin. You know these movies that you make for us and that keep giving us billions? Let's not do that anymore. We're gonna use an objectively nonsensical excuse to weasel our way out of the goldmine!"

"You expect smart moves from a studio that just made THIS?"

I expect them to understand what a billion dollars are and I'm not making stuff up just to convince myself of my own baseless assumptions.

SauronthePower
SauronthePower - 5/22/2022, 1:19 PM
@Drace24 - actual cameo appearances do not count towards contractual appearance numbers so I would assume with almost concrete certainty that a simple name-drop, being so much less, is a giant nothing burger.
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/22/2022, 1:34 PM
@VictorAlonzo - Reality check: Disney isn't even in the top 100 of the biggest and most powerful companies in the world. How focused people are on Mickey Mouse and not the many, many ACTUAL evil monopolies in the world will never not make me question people's common sense.
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/22/2022, 1:36 PM
@SauronthePower - When it comes to cameos it really depends on what the contract specifically states. Tony Starks apperance in the after-credits scene of TiH absolutely counted as a contractually obligated apperance in another movie.

But yes, name-drops can never be forbidden. That is nonsense.
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 5/22/2022, 1:54 PM
@Drace24 - 🤔 Are you implying that I am focused on Mickey Mouse? How much common sense is required to focus on the lack of other's common sense? What actual evil monopoly should we as a whole focus on? Once we've focused, what do you suggest we do about it? What is a good monopoly in your opinion?
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/22/2022, 2:37 PM
@VictorAlonzo - Gee, I dunno. Big Oil, big coal, big pharma, big data, banks, the gun industry, utility companies... [frick]ing Amazon?

No? Mickey Mouse instead? The people who make cartoons and superhero movies are your biggest concern for the world? Not the many much bigger and richer companies that literally destroy the planet, corrupt the government and murder people? Alrighty. You totally have your priorities straight there.
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 5/22/2022, 3:12 PM
@Drace24 - I think you should reread what TONIC24K AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT, then reconsider the need to address me of your worldly grievances. My picture was a joke regarding Disney taking over the ENTERTAINMENT WORLD,, before you came along.. My biggest concern is neither Disney or the corporations you named. However, since You brought them up, what do you suggest we do about them? I'm happy to assist your energy for a conversation that brings about solutions. What ya got?

VictorAlonzo - 5/23/2022, 7:07 AM
@Drace24 - What do you think it means? I asked you for solutions, you didn't give one. You say I'm backpeddling, which is out of context to the entirety of the conversation.
For the record:

backpeddling: reverse one's previous action or opinion.
"you've criticized him for backpedaling on budget reform"
Similar:
change one's mind
change one's opinion
go into reverse
do an about-face
do a U-turn
row back
Drace24
Drace24 - 5/23/2022, 7:17 AM
@VictorAlonzo - Yes, you asked me to give you a solution to the problem of you talking nonsense. I opted to ignore that request due to it being more nonsense.

And now, based on that definition, can you explain how the word backpedaling is an insult?
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 5/23/2022, 8:03 AM
@Drace24 - This is not that complicated. The context of the word backpeddling proves that it has no business here. If anything, you backpeddled by choosing to ignore the question (yet continuing to respond), after you got my attention in regards to your suggestion of the "bigger concerns" I should have. I asked you about solutions to the issues you addressed, and have yet to see one from you. You sir, are Michael Jackson on a tricycle.

Because if it isn't, then it completely negates the ending of NWH.
