SPIDER-MAN 4 Receives Another Promising Update From Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman

Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman shares some updates on the future of the Spider-Man franchise, as well as news on how the studio's own Marvel movies, Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, are progressing.

During Spider-Man: No Way Home's press tour, Tom Holland talked repeatedly about potentially saying goodbye to Peter Parker. We're pretty sure all of that was a public negotiating tactic to secure a massive new deal for another trilogy, though the franchise's future is somewhat in doubt (the hope is that Sony Pictures will continue working with Marvel Studios, but nothing has been confirmed).

Talking to Deadline, Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman was asked about the wall-crawler's future, confirming that "We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie."

Asked specifically by the trade whether director Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland and Zendaya will return in that fourth chapter, the executive seems optimistic that they will be back. "That whole group, we hope. Then there are movies I would call adjunct to the Spider-Man universe," Rothman added. "That’s Kraven, which we’re shooting now, and Madam Web, which we’ll start in the spring with S.J. Clarkson directing. And then there are many Marvel characters that are standalone."

Watts was supposed to take the helm of Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios, but decided to take a break from the MCU. Now, he's moving on to a Galaxy Far, Far Away for a Star Wars Disney+ series he's created, so time will tell whether he decides to revisit Peter Parker's story down the line.

Unfortunately, we don't anticipate seeing Spider-Man 4 in 2023 (the previous movies have all been released two years apart), though there's probably a decent chance it will hit theaters in 2024.
