SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING - 5 Not So Spectacular Rumors Which Ended Up Being Bullsh*t
Now that we've all seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, it's the perfect time to look back on some huge rumours which we now know were total BS! There are some good ones here, so you'll want to check them out...
For every big superhero movie, there are always a lot of rumours. Now and again, plot details and spoilers don't leak because studios do such a good job of keeping everything under wraps but there are always rumblings about something or other out there for fans like us to bicker over! Spider-Man: Homecoming was no exception, though many of those revolved around the casting of Tom Holland!
It felt like we were getting conflicting reports about who would play Peter Parker in the reboot for YEARS but after he was finally cast, it seemed scoopers were too burned out to deliver new reports about what was to come in the movie. There were still a lot of very interesting rumours out there, though, and what you'll find here is a look at five outlandish claims which never actually came true.
From cameos to plot twists and big character reveals, these rumours kept us talking but have now been proven totally false. Spider-Man: Homecoming could have been very, very differenti ndeed...
5. Kraven The Hunter Is The Movie's Lead Villain
Fans have wanted to see Kraven the Hunter brought to the big screen for years now so when Heroic Hollywood claimed that some suspect purchases by Sony Pictures execs and information in the Sony Hack emails had led them to believe that the characters was being considered for the reboot. Needless to say, that was not the case, though rumours have recently surfaced (likely not connected in any way to this) in regards to Kraven getting a movie of his own.
This was far from the only rumour about Spider-Man: Homecoming's villains, though. Michael Mando was thought to be Carnage for a brief spell and there were even rumblings that Daredevil star Vincent D'Onofrio could show up as Wilson Fisk (he was, after all, a Spider-Man villain in his first appearance). Bryan Cranston and Michael McConaughey were also named as being contenders to play Norman Osborn but that villain was absolutely nowhere to be seen in the reboot.
4. Aunt May's Boyfriend
For quite some time, we heard that Aunt May would have a love interest in Spider-Man: Homecoming and while many fans initially wondered if that could be Adrian Toomes (similar to the Doctor Octopus/Aunt May relationship in the comic books), a report later surfaced claiming that whoever Logan Marshall-Green had been cast as would end up being May's potentially sinister boyfriend. That led to a lot of speculation that his character would be a pivotal one but we've since learned that was far from accurate.
The same report claimed that the reboot would introduce someone "central to the Spider-Man mythos" who would "play a larger role in upcoming films." Exciting stuff, eh? Well, while it's possible that's a reference to Mac Gargan, I really don't think Scorpion is being lined up as anything more than a supporting player for whatever comes next in this franchise so we can probably write that off as a totally uninformed guess.
3. A Black Widow Cameo
It was revealed fairly early on that Iron Man would join the wall-crawler in Spider-Man: Homecoming but rumours persisted that we would see another Marvel Studios character in the movie. Sony obviously spoiled that in the trailers a couple of months ago when Captain America showed up, something which arguably would have been better off saved for the moment the reboot hit the big screen.
Regardless, one name rumoured to show up during shooting was Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. It was said that she had been spotted on set in Atlanta while Spider-Man: Homecoming was filming but that was either a coincidence or complete lie as the only mention of the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the movie comes when Flash Thompson claims he's dating her in retaliation for Ned Leeds revealing that Peter "knows" Spider-Man. Maybe in the sequel, eh?
2. The Savage Land
Perhaps this is where the Kraven the Hunter rumour originated! Back in 2015, we still had no real idea what to expect from Spider-Man: Homecoming (it didn't even have a title at the time). That's what made the rumour of a Savage Land setting so exciting; after all, it's vastly different to previous instalments of the franchise, would have explored a new part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the combination of superheroes and dinosaurs after the success of Jurassic World that year made this mashup a guaranteed hit, surely?
Either way, it didn't happen and chances are there could have been a mix up here as we later learned that Sinister Six would have potentially taken us to the Savage Land. This was one of the reboot's most far-fetched rumours but far more interesting than ones like The Tinkerer being an ex-Stark Industries employee (false) and the title being Spider-Man: The New Avenger (also false) so it's easy to see why so many people were so intrigued by this one.
1. Zendaya Is Mary Jane Watson
Zendaya obviously looks a lot different to the Mary Jane Watson from the comic books but it would have been far from the end of the world for her to have been revealed as being the character by the time all was said and done. Spider-Man: Homecoming did actually confirm that Michelle is also known as "MJ" before the credits rolled, but both Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have since said that she's not actually Mary Jane and that the scene was essentially just a bit of fun.
Despite that, the persistent reports that Zendaya had been cast as Mary Jane were clearly inaccurate as that is not the character the model turned actress was cast as or unveiled as being. For months, the same reporter said that Mary Jane would be in the movie but Peter Parker's love interest was Liz Toomes (a fact which never actually leaked) and we can now put these claims down to being little more than an attempted lucky guess.
Which of these bullsh*t rumours do you wish had come true? Have we missed any other far-fetched claims? As always, let us know your thoughts down below.
