Recently, we just got a new trailer for
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. After seeing it, even the non-convinced should be somewhat intrigued by this film. It just looks downright unique, and utterly fun. Still, Sony isn't known for their successful animated movies.Their resume includes the likes of
The Smurfs,
Angry Birds The Movie, and
The Emoji Movie. Honestly, the best animated movie they've had so far is probably
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Ouch.
However, there's something about
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that seems different. This could be Sony's shiny gem surrounded by a bunch of coal. How exactly?
Well, for starters, it's Spider-Man. Just the name alone will get people in those theater seats. Like mentioned before, this will be the Miles Morales version of Spidey that will take over the story. Although, he won't be alone. Judging from the trailer, he'll be mentored by the original Spider-Man; Peter Parker. Along with him will be Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham. Yes, that last one is a real character from the comics. So obviously, this won't just be your average webhead film.
This will be taking Spider-Man and his characters somewhere we've never quite seen before in theaters. That alone is an interest factor, and if done right, could be a huge hit.
Another thing that sticks out is the zany but stylish animation. It's 3D animated characters, in a 2D comic book background. The colors and design pieces are almost mesmerizing. Considering it's a cartoon, you have a bit more freedom in how you want to make action scenes. Instead of forcing the audience to believe it's real, you're just pushing the limits on the fantasy. So there's a lot of potential on where this animation will go for the film.
Last but not least, it simply just looks awesome. The jokes are funny, everything seems well written, and it's creative. Could this all fall flat when it actually comes out? Possibly. However, this could easily be a big win for Sony and Marvel. If it really does well, maybe Sony should focus on making an animated Spider-Man universe, instead of forcing Venom and his amazing friends in our face.
