SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Actor John Mulaney Hilariously Describes The Spider-Ham Casting Process

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened in theaters this week, so actor/comedian John Mulaney stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about the animated film and his role in it.

In the film, Mulaney plays Peter Porker, aka Spider-Ham, which he says the directors initially described to him as a "pig who makes nonstop outdated jokes."

Mulaney went on to explain how he was pitched the role in Into the Spider-Verse. Explaining that these superhero movies tend to be kept under wraps, he likened the secrecy in which the role was explained to him to "how a lot of kidnappings begin."

Mulaney also explained the process in which he recorded his lines for the movie. "It is wonderfully scripted, but they did a thing that is very generous when they say to comedy people. They say, 'Have fun with it and, you know, add your own words. And so. for the very first session - I'm still in flight or fight 'cause I think it's a kidnapping - I did go my own way with it, and I threw in my own lines, and what happened was I was just cursing wildly."

Thankfully, some of Mulaney's initial outtakes were recorded and shared during the interview, which you can watch in full below (the outtakes start at 5:38).

Meanwhile, over on Marvel.com, all three directors - Rodney Rothman, Peter Ramsey, and Bob Persichetti - discussed what it was like working with John Mulaney as Spider-Ham on Into the Spider-Verse.

Rodney Rothman: I had known him for a while. He just seemed like perfect casting for Spider-Ham. Also, greedily, we knew how Mulaney isn’t just a crazy funny interesting person but he has a brilliant writer’s brain. You know when you hire someone like that, you know in [voice] records, this guy’s going to be riffing out stuff that’s better than anything.

Peter Ramsey: I recorded him remotely, and he started going and I was just reduced to tears through the whole thing. I barely said anything. We just turned on the switch and it was astonishing. That guy deserves everything.

Bob Persichetti: The first time we recorded him, I was like, “Oh, wow, this was the right choice!”

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.

I've never really payed attention to John Mulaney before, but I swear Spider-Ham's voice reminded me of someone else entirely. Can't put my finger on who though.

@Kurne - I know what you mean, and I'm sure I will think of it just as people stop talking about this movie.

@Spock0Clock - for animated roles, voice actors always try to sound goofier (like Mulaney in this film), so there's probably a ton we're subconsciously thinking sound similar.

@Kurne - Reminds me of Nathan Lane.

@SuperManes - I think that was it.

Though, now I'm in that weird place where someone says the thing you're trying to think of and it doesn't sound quite right. But I think it was Lane.

The crazy thing to me is that Porker, Peni and Noir didn't even need to be in the movie at all. There wasn't really anything to their contribution to the narrative and Miles's development that wasn't already there through Peter B. and Gwen. They just made things weirder and funnier.

I really respect that they went there anyways.

@Kyos - I do feel like Peni was unnecessary in a bad way. They could have cut her and lost basically nothing. Spider-Ham and Noir, though, were great comedic presences.

@Kyos - makes sense though. The comic version of spiderman only used a handful of spidermen for the narrative but so many of them were still there. But considering how the movie makes a point of anyone can be spiderman their inclusion does work. Like, it doesnt matter if you're going through emotional problems, are from a different country, or a pig, anyone can be spiderman. And seeing other people assume that title instead of specifically peter parker was essential for miles' growth.

Off topic though but into the spiderverse is really similar to my idea for a spiderman in the mcu. Basically dimensional stuff would happen leading to holland's spiderman meeting the Maguire and Garfield versions. This would act as the finale of both of those series and includes a bunch of cool character moments like a harry osborn who became green goblin instead of his father and interactions between Garfield and spider gwen but they would both mentor holland on what it means to be spiderman. In the end holland shows his own strengths as a hero and all the spidermen give their blessings to holland before leaving into their own universes. Not saying they did steal from me or that they even could have (i never wrote it online) just thought it was weird.

I can't believe it's 2018, a full ten years after the first release of the first superhero shared universe movie, and nearly as long since Disney bought Marvel, and we still haven't gotten a Darkwing Duck revival.

Come on, Mouse, this is low hanging fruit.
