As you're no doubt already well aware, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a critical hit and all the signs are already pointing to it picking up the "Best Animated Picture" award at next year's Oscars.
While it's no secret that Sony Pictures has a habit of cramming too many characters into its Marvel movies (just look at Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2), the fact that they make multiple spider heroes work is an impressive feat but which of them deserves to be called the best?
Well, that's what we're taking a look at here today.
There are eight spiders from the Spider-Verse in the animated movie and while they're all spectacular, some are more amazing than others. To find out how comes out on top, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button below for the full breakdown.
8. SP//dr
Peni Parker is definitely an entertaining addition to Into the Spider-Verse and something tells me that little girls, in particular, will end up really gravitating towards this particular version of Spider-Man.
The movie doesn't spend a huge amount of time delving into what makes her tick but she has a surprisingly emotional character arc here and while I'm not sure that there's a whole lot more that could be done with Peni moving forward, it's mostly good fun to spend time with the young hero.
It's just unfortunate that she shows up at a point in the movie when we've already connected with a number of other spider heroes as that definitely hurts her to some extent.
7. Peter Parker
This is the Spider-Man that dies near the start of the movie who sets the young Miles Morales on the path to becoming a superhero.
Voiced by Chris Pine, the blonde (yes, blonde) Peter Parker feels a little too perfect but that's sort of the point. He has a happy life, celebrity status, and a secret base full of gadgets and additional suits. Things are even going well for him with Mary Jane Watson!
The way his death is handled is a tad underwhelming (Spidey's death should have a larger impact) but this was a nice play on what went down in the Ultimate line of comic books and this "perfect" Spider-Man was needed to set an example to two other heroes...
6. Spider-Man 2099
That's right, despite not being included in any marketing materials, Spider-Man 2099 does indeed make a surprise appearance in Into the Spider-Verse's after-credits scene.
It's a scene played for laughs as he travels to the universe inhabited by the Spider-Man from the wall-crawler's first animated series way back in the 1960s. However, Oscar Isaac was undeniably the perfect choice to voice Miguel O'Hara and the fact we even get to see Lyla is bound to make fans of this spider's comic book exploits very happy indeed.
Whether or not this is setting the stage for a sequel is hard to say but Spider-Man 2099 is a character we've all been desperately waiting to see on the big screen for some time now.
5. Spider-Ham
An admittedly weird addition to this movie, Spider-Ham really shouldn't work here (especially as he's portrayed as a cartoon in the "real world") but he does and is bound to be someone moviegoers want to see more of moving forward.
His antics never grate and the animation style used to bring him to life not only looks amazing but makes him stand out in a way which will ensure that people leave the theater quoting some of his funniest - and most ridiculous - lines.
John Mulaney was an ideal choice of actor to play Peter Porker and we need to see more of him!
4. Spider-Noir
Nicolas Cage shocked everyone with his incredible performance in Kick-Ass when he channelled Adam West to play Big Daddy and his work here is equally as surprising and memorable.
As Spider-Noir, he uses Humphrey Bogart as a basis for a character who is probably the most unique Spider-Man in Into the Spider-Verse. This wall-crawler has some of the best lines and is hilariously bizarre (especially when he becomes fascinated with a Rubix Cube...after all, he's from a world which is black and white).
Sure, he doesn't get a story arc as such but he's a fantastic addition to this adventure.
3. Spider-Woman
Gwen Stacy has a significant amount of screentime in Into the Spider-Verse and it's easy to see why Sony Pictures is already plotting a female-led spinoff which will revolve around this hero and a number of others. A total badass who strikes up a meaningful friendship with Miles Morales, this is definitely a worthy take on a massively popular comic book character.
What's really interesting is the fact that the movie has given her a dance background of sorts as her movements are clearly inspired by that, something which helps Gwen stand out in a big way.
There are some great teases her for her future and while the craziness of Peni Parker might appeal to younger moviegoers, I don't think there's a teenage girl (or boy, for that matter) out there who won't be inspired by this tough as nails web-spinner.
2. Miles Morales
I've never been the biggest fan of Miles Morales' comic book adventures (mostly because of Brian Michael Bendis' often atrocious writing) but regardless of whether you love the alternate universe Spider-Man or are as indifferent as I was, you will leave Into the Spider-Verse rooting for this kid.
His journey is compelling from start to finish and while he begins trying to emulate the "perfect" Spidey I mentioned earlier, it's great to ultimately see Miles become a superhero in his own right.
While we're no strangers to a Spider-Man origin story, getting to see Miles come to terms with his powers is something fresh and different and that already announced sequel can't come soon enough because his story continuing on the big screen is a must.
1. Peter B. Parker
Miles is a fantastic lead but as a major fan of the original Spider-Man, I can't help but single out Peter B. Parker as my favourite.
This version of Spidey has been doing his thing for over twenty years and isn't quite the man we all know from the comic books. He's gained some weight, had to bury his Aunt May, and even ended up divorcing Mary Jane Watson because he was scared to have kids.
He's not a perfect Spider-Man by any means but that's what makes following his story so much fun as his arc is one of redemption. Jake Johnson is a superb choice to voice him (which surprised me) and while I doubt we'll see more of him, I really hope I'm wrong.
