It Seems There Was No Chance New SPIDER-MAN Would Be Anything But White & Straight

And those hoping he might dabble in a spot of drug dealing will be disappointed too. A leaked legal licencing agreement between Marvel and Sony clearly spell out the "mandatory Spider-Man character traits", and he was always going to be portrayed exactly as he always has been...

Spider-Man Can't Be Gay or Black

When it was announced that Marvel had regained some rights to the Spider-Man character, fans wondered if this new incarnation might shake things up a bit since both previous big-screen versions pretty much followed the exact same blueprint. Marvel and Sony had an opportunity to diversify one of the most iconic fictional characters in history by perhaps using Miles Morales, or even just casting a non-white actor in the Peter Parker role.

Rumors swirled that this may have been the plan, but if the details of this leaked licencing agreement between the studios are anything to go by, our new Spidey was always going to be exactly like our old ones.

Spider-Man Can't Be Gay or Black

Notice it doesn't say anything about him USING drugs - junkie Spider-Man?? It also doesn't specify that he can't be a giant tampon - calling it now! Seriously though, this is kinda hilarious and proves that no matter what studio bigwigs say about being open to diversifying these type of big characters characters... they ain't! What do you guys think? Perhaps the purists are nodding their heads in agreement? Sound off in the usual place.

Oh no! Whatever shall we do! I say we all gather together and boycott them for not giving us a completely misinterpreted version of a beloved pop culture icon!

I believe I carry the ideology needed to bring an accurate and beloved interpretation of Spider-Man/Peter Parker.

Oh, he's Caucasian? Never mind.

When they actually do SM correctly and continuously, we could see a Miles Morales. Until then keep working.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man is white and straight.

This is hopefully enough of an insight to get people to get OFF the Miles Morales train.

Spidey is Peter Parker. Whitest of white. Middle class superhero as they come.

Miles may one day get a chance to appear on screen, but not in the first outing. I'd even like to see pieces of the clone sage emerge so that a raft of fans can get to see their faves on screen. So many to choose from.

For now, just concentrate of Peter's version, and the eventual symbiote version (which hopefully ain't just a retread of the SM3 debacle of just coloring the same suit black...ugh).

I don't think it's necessarily wrong that they're sticking to the classic version, I just think this email is mental. Like,,"don't even THINK about changing anything!!"

The WORST WAS dc making alan scott gay. Stupid.
It erases jade and obsidian. It ignores precedent.
And if ever there was a superhero where you could - you know - INTRODUCE diversity AND keep tradition its green lantern.
Green lantern was built so that others could have the ring. When dc felt like they needed black characters they didnt change hal jordan black, they kept hal jordan AND ADDED john stewart.

But hey- if FAUX intellectuals think its just a "opposition to change" allow them their smugness.

Don't know why we needed more confirmation. It was always going to be Peter Parker, whether people liked it or not. The Miles Morales fans are just simply more vocal and in-denial.

Definitely. The line about what age he's allowed to have sex made me chuckle.

Yep, it's the mindset that's weird. But I won't say anything beyond that because this thread's inevitably going to get ugly.

But seriously, I find it funny how specific Marvel was in the specifications. For example, he's not allowed to deal drugs or bang minors? Don't tell me anyone ever actually suggested those things at one point!

So did these rules come from the Marvel side or the Sony side? Also, while they did demand Peter be white, they didn't demand Spidey be Peter, saying they were open to alternatiive, including a gay one if the character was gay in the comics. Basically, they're scared of backlash if they change a particular character's race or sexuality
