Jamie Bell Closing In On Spider-Man?

Last week it was reported that Sony has a short list of actors that may be close to portraying Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in the franchise reboot. Bleedingcool.com is reporting that Jamie Bell (Jumper, Billy Elliot) may be very close to inking the deal...

In the last twenty-four hours, Bleeding Cool had received repeated reports that Sony have settled on their new Spider-Man. And he is Jamie Bell, English actor, star of Billy Elliot with another major comc-book lead under his belt, playing Tintin in the upcoming Spielberg/Jackson/Moffat/Cornish/Wright CGI adaptation of the popular comic.

I think Bell is a talent, a fine actor who will no doubt have a solid future in the industry, but is he ready for the role of a lifetime? That's the hard question. You guys know what to do!

Update: Although Bleeding Cool haven't heard anything back from Sony after their inquiry as to whether Bell's securing of the role is legit, Cinematical have received a firm "No Comment". No we all know that no comment means..well, no comment! But its not a denial, and since studios are not usually too hesitant about quashing a rumor, I for one think it may just mean Bell is our Spidey. But hey, who knows! You will as soon as we do. -Ror.

I actually like this. He's a great actor and fully capable to fill the part. I would never have suggested Tobey for the role and he did pretty well

I'm quite interested to see what comes of this. I think Bell is an incredibly talented young actor, and, to be honest, I think he could do something very good with the role. He's not exactly what I would call an ideal candidate, but maybe he's left-field enough to work. He was definitely my pick out of that group of supposed contenders from a week or so back.

I'll be pleasantly surprised and intrigued if he does get cast.

He'd be good. I just hope Sony doesn't cast a Twilight actor just because they know that tons of girls will pay to see that Twilight actor. If Jamie gets the part, then I'll be fine with that.

With the way he looks in this pic I'd give him the benefit of the doubt because in the other pics he looked too "badass" for my thoughts on how Parker should look.

i like this pick. i like their whole list of "contenders" i even like the director.

why am i still not optimistic? :(

i guess i'm just not down for a "reboot" - batman begins might've been the best and simultaneously worst thing to happen to CBMs. it showed how comic heroes can be taken seriously but now every studio thinks when it's gone down the wrong path... REBOOT! because it worked for Batman. there was just way to much left in spider-man to warrant a reboot. re-cast, hire a new director go a different diection. but in those movie pete was still in college so even you cast this guy he'd be able to pick up right where toby and raimi left off.

they have to do it like TIH. no origin just - PLUNK - right into the story of the hero being a hero. the spectacular spider-man did this well. first episode - right into it.

I'm happy cuz he's a good actor and he will do good and i say that evan rachel wood should be MJ, Jason Isaacs should be Norman Osborn, and Cam Gignant should be Eddie Brock/Venom.

So, are they not concerned with him aging out of the role like Maguire did? He's playing a Peter that's going to be about 3 years younger than Peter in the original movie, yet he's the same age as Maguire was when he played the character.

On another note, does anyone else think it's getting a little ridiculous that American actors can't get jobs in American movies, playing American characters?I mean, Batman, maybe Spider-Man and I'll bet at least half the actors in X-Men:First Class will be British.

Red flag alert! This picture makes Bell look like a younger Tobey Maguire. I don't want to be reminded of Maguire while I'm watching someone else play the role.
He still looks too old to be playing a 15-16 year old.

At least the messy hair in the picture with the article makes him look like a good science geek. I hope that would be incorporated into his appearance should he get the role.

I don't get the whole "This guy looks like Peter this guy doesn't thing." The look of Peter Parker, like just about every other comic book character, is determined by the artist to a great extent. There is a basic look (young, white, brown hair) but other than that his face changes a lot. To say that either Tobey or Jamie, who both have the basic Peter looks, doesn't look like Peter is kind of ridiculous.

This is Peter Parker

This is Peter Parker

This is Peter Parker

See my point?

"Role of a lifetime" to spidey fans, sure, but I don't see why he should take it that way. It's like any other role. Honestly, I think Billy Elliot was one with more complexity.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 6/7/2010, 5:51 PM
"Role of a lifetime" as in, if he gets the part, does well, and the movie does well, then his status is elevated and he becomes a much more high profile actor. He'll be able to ask for more money, more big roles will come his way, and if he has done more small, serious roles before (I don't know anything about his career) then he'll probably be able to do almost any kind of movie he wants to.

Jamie is a great actor, don't get me wrong, but he just doesn't look right for Peter. I was actually warming up to the idea of Josh Hutcherson getting the role. I even came up with an idea for an article to show why he would be a good choice. Jamie looks too old to be a teenager. Hopefully this is just a rumor and we will hear more from a more credible source.

P.S.

I better put my updated fancast(s) aside so I can do the Josh article then.

@Set2Fallfirst AND it doesn't matter how talented an actor is. Matt Damon might be a great actor, but does he fit the role of Peter Parker? No. It doesn't matter how talented an actor is, they just can't fit into a role that doesn't make sense for them. I just can't see Bell playing Peter Parker. It's just my opinion.

@t2- that avengers poster is badass cause its soo true, sick of seeing johnny depp in everything. oh yeah alice in wonderland sucked ass! ryan reynolds is going to be next to do every hero as well, and maybe even chris evans...

but seriously umm for peter parker theres been a lot of different looks for him. sometimes he has a nerdy look but other times he looks like a badass, remember the old 90s cartoon he looked nothing like a nerd and was big as hell.
