MORBIUS: Michael Keaton Says Trying To Understand Adrian Toomes Return Was Like "Quantum Physics"

The first trailer for Morbius featured a surprise appearance from Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes, but the actor admits that the explanation for his return wasn't something he found overly easy to follow...

Michael Keaton played Adrian Toomes/The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and by the time all was said and done, the villain had been defeated by the wall-crawler and placed behind bars.

In the first trailer for Morbius, Toomes was shown wearing a prison jumpsuit and speaking to the title character. Seeing as the MCU and SPUMC are different worlds, fans were left confused, especially when a shot of Spidey elsewhere in the teaser showed the hero decked out in the suit from Sam Raimi's movies.

It feels like there's something Multiverse-related going on here (especially after Loki), and that might have been confirmed by Keaton's confusion upon his role in Morbius being explained to him.

The Hollywood Reporter explains that the filmmakers "started talking him through the logic of the fictional universe" by "referencing recent Marvel plot points," but that's where they lost him. "I’m nodding like I know what the [frick] they’re talking about. I go, ‘Uh-huh.’ And I’m thinking, ‘You may as well be explaining quantum physics right now to me,'" he explains. "'All I know is I just know my guy. And I know the basics.'"

"So finally, they were looking at me, and they just started laughing. They said, ‘You don’t know what we’re talking about, do you?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t, no idea what you’re talking about.’"

Ever since Sony Pictures struck a new deal with Disney, we've heard that Spidey is going to start swinging between worlds. With Spider-Man: No Way Home clearly set to dive headfirst into the Multiverse, the reason for another Toomes being in the SPUMC could soon become clear...unless the likes of Morbius and Venom are about to become canon in the MCU!

As for Keaton, he didn't really keep track of comic book movies after starring in Tim Burton's Batman films, but is well aware of their importance in Hollywood today. "They’ll be doing Marvel movies forever. I’ll be dead, and they’ll still be doing Marvel movies."

Interesting to hear...maybe they were talking about the Multiverse and he wasn't grasping the concept of it? Maybe DC's explanation was better =)

@PC04 - Yeah this pretty much confirms it. So is he going to be the MCU Vulture or a variant Sony Vulture?

It's going to be interesting to find out.

@PC04 - It seems pretty clear they were trying to explain the multiverse to him and it had nothing to do with his actual character being a variant, etc... so that leads me to believe he will be playing the version we already know but will interact with other characters from other universes... aka tobeyverse and garfieldverse.

@JonC - Would you guess it's a Sinister Six origin? With Morbius involved it'd be really strange.

@mastakilla39 - Right? These movies are so full of questions. These details coming out about SM:NWH & Morbius are leading me to believe that Sony and Marvel have plans to connect these films in a larger way than expected even sooner.

@PC04 - It could be, but they could have also been describing the business rights between Sony and Marvel. Which if you didn't already know, can sound like quantum physics.

Since he’s coming back in a DC multiverse movie as well, I wonder if his confusion here is that he’s not playing EXACTLY the same character. Maybe they were trying to explain how he is a variant or something lol.

Either way, not too excited for Morbius but cautiously optimistic, I am however always ready for more Michael Keaton

You don’t know what we’re talking about, do you?
I think that goes for all of us at this point Sony.

While he's not my favorite Batman, Keaton did well with what he was given. He also has always come off as a likeable, down to earth no bullshit kinda guy. He's also a pretty solid "dramatic" actor.

While it's not the greatest movie, still good imo, check him out in Clean and Sober, where he gives a very good performance of a rotten narcissistic addict.

I love the idea that every Marvel Entertainment property is now a multiverse or variant story but I fear that giving Sony leeway into that they will just keep ruining characters. Sony should just do a Spiderman 2099 series of shared movies and let the MCU stick with Peter and Miles.

@SonOfAGif - They did the multiverse thing first and won an Oscar, It Seems they did right.

@YonnyLayna - That was an animated movie.

@SonOfAGif - As if that makes it any less of a masterpiece of the film
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 8/19/2021, 9:41 AM
@globaltravels - It does because most people give a pass to animated films as opposed to live action. If you made into the Spider verse the same way in live action, I guarantee you would have critics bitching at poor character development and rushed plots. I bet if Batman v. Superman was an animated movie it would have gotten praise as opposed to it's live action version.

If I were him, I wouldn’t even bother trying to understand anything Sony does.

I've had this theory (thats definetely wrong) for a while now.

The SPUMC is part of a 'secret' deal between Disney and Sony, the SPUMC is used to make darker movies that might Disney can't fully associate with?

This can be used to introduce players for a Sinister Six movie (Morbius and Kraven), there were earlier rumours that the Rami suit seen in the trailer is to diverge fans.
I can totally see them sitting down and explaining this to Keaton and him getting lost.

Sounds like multiverse but with extra steps. Those extra steps being gross corporate contracts with Sony pictures

Trust me Keaton, quantum physics is a whole lot easier than trying to understand Sony's plans.

This movie is going to be so bad. But man, do I love Keaton as Toomes (and literally everything else he ever does)
