SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME - Here's Why The Movie Scrapped Plans For Comic-Accurate Take On The Lizard

Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding confirms that a comic-accurate Lizard was considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home and reveals why The Amazing Spider-Man design was left unchanged.

Had Spider-Man: No Way Home not been shot in the midst of the pandemic, chances are the movie would have been at least a little different. Due to travel restrictions, for example, neither Rhys Ifans nor Thomas Haden Church were able to shoot their respective returns as The Lizard and Sandman.

They were able to voice the characters, but recycled footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 was used to show both villains in their human forms.

The newly released "Art of" book for the 2021 threequel reveals that Marvel Studios considered completely overhauling The Lizard's appearance, delivering something more in line with the comic books.

That meant giving Curt Connors his purple pants and lab coat along with an elongated snout which was absent from his 2012 live-action debut. However, as much as COVID impacted Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was decided fairly early on that The Amazing Spider-Man's design would remain.

"We're looking to pull a character from another film and have this audience believe it's that same character," Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding explains. "If we change it too much, if we're changing bone structure, it doesn't feel like it's the character from that other movie, and we've lost the magic of The Multiverse."

"Having said that, all the explorations that [Visual Development Supervisor Ian Joyner] did were incredible," he adds. "Incorporating more costume and ripped and torn pants or shirts or lab coats, was also part of the fun exploration that I'm glad we did, even if it didn't end up serving the story."

Seeing a comic-accurate Lizard on screen would have been a blast, and it's a shame there wasn't room for him to evolve as the story continued. Curt Connors was largely a secondary villain, with the focus instead on Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Electro.

It's also worth noting, as we did well over a decade ago, that this Lizard design is how the villain looked when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first introduced him!

Gotta agree. Like, what's the point of celebrating the past if you need to change it so drastically.

Only change I liked was goblin, because that showed a nice progression. Of Norman battling for control and goblin winning out.

Sandman was fine, though just an excuse to not have the character in. And while electro works for an mcu styled version, it just didn't work for tasm 2 electro (and before you say that version sucked, didn't stop them from including him in the first place).

@Origame - Or change it in a subtle way. No need for drastic.

I think they could have gotten away with a redesign. The Lizard/Connors undergoes physical transformations in the comics. He gets bigger, stronger, and more animal-like. But any significant changes in character design would probably have to be explained within the film, and that would’ve taken a little extra time in an already really stuffed film.

Besides, Lizard was a super minor character in the movie. Remember when all the villains go up to Happy’s condo, and they just leave Lizard in the van?

@santoanderson - they ever mention why he stayed in the van?

Good. Consistency is better (although they did mess with it a little). I already like the TASM Lizard design anyway, I don't need it to be "comic-accurate".

Was this a question people needed answered?

I thought it was pretty obvious that’s why the character looked the same.

Geez! This silly comic accurate nonsense! NOBODY CARES!!!! These "not comic accurate" threads are the most ridiculous conversation in this entire community. Like someone once said...when you say comic accurate. Which comic? The character is drawn differently for each artist and the movie version should have the same license to interpret his look they way they think comes across best. Does he look like a lizard? Yes! End of the conversation!

Origame - 8/7/2023, 11:56 AM
@Forthas - you can't really equate artistic style to suit design. For the most part the suits do stay the same.

And guess what? When the comics go in radical directions, the fans complain there too. Like what happened when superman lost his red trunks in the new 52.

@Origame -

"When the comics go in radical directions, the fans complain there too"

SOME fans might complain. I suspect the vast majority don't. The reason that Warner Brothers is the ongoing crapshow it is today is that they listen to the vocal fans which do not represent the majority. I have NEVER heard anyone like or dislike a film because the costumes were not "comic accurate" which I still contend have no meaning.

Here is the ORIGINAL and therefore the most comic accurate design for Batman.

So I guess we should go back to that?

dagenspear - 8/7/2023, 12:59 PM
@Forthas - I think there's a difference between classical and/or stronger character designs and an initial design for the character.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 8/7/2023, 1:02 PM
@Forthas - No he doesn't like the lizard. He looks more like Killer Croc.

Who says it's the end of the conversation?
dagenspear
dagenspear - 8/7/2023, 1:04 PM
@Forthas - And I think this post seems like you don't like people disliking something and/or others talking about changing it. LORD willing, it doesn't hurt you.
Origame
Origame - 8/7/2023, 1:10 PM
@Forthas - 1) you say that, yet they always go back to the status quo.

2) no one liked or disliked a film because of creature design. But that's hardly something ignored by audiences and isn't worth striving to improve upon.

3) that batman never made it to print.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/7/2023, 2:12 PM
@dagenspear - There is no difference. It is a personal choice but the problem is that not everyone will agree on these choices. Therefore the artist in question is simply going to deliver his/her vision of the character and sometimes it will look like the comic and sometimes the artis may think it looks better another way.

When you say he looks like Killer croc...which version?

Its not that I don't like people disliking something, it is that this particular subject cannot be resolved. No matter what form of the Lizard they use it is not going to look like an alternate comic version therefore there is no such thing as comic accurate. There are MANY different comic versions. It just makes no sense to argue over something that cannot be resolved.

Forthas
Forthas - 8/7/2023, 2:21 PM
@Origame - I think the opposite of what you stated. People keep looking to change these characters and how they looked.

Even if audiences noticed it, it is too late to do anything about it since even within the comics there are various versions of characters. There is no one version that everyone agrees on.

Ok then this Batman...

..who does not have the yellow trim and looks nothing like this Batman...

Origame
Origame - 8/7/2023, 2:44 PM
@Forthas - 1) yeah, comic artists who want to reinvent the wheel. But not the fans. Why would fans want something different from what they love?

2) like, what? Just because there are many versions doesn't mean it's too late to do things. Sure, this story might be done. But you can change it to be closer to the classic overtime.

3) dude, look closer. That does have yellow trim. In fact the only differences between the two is no yellow on the logo and different gloves. Everything else is exactly the same.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 8/7/2023, 6:33 PM
@Forthas - this reminds me how much I actually did like their take on Killer Croc in Suicide Squad. I'm willing to be in a minority
Slotherin
Slotherin - 8/7/2023, 6:35 PM
@Forthas - I mean, they still have heavily consistent characteristics between the two, but I get your point
dagenspear
dagenspear - 8/7/2023, 7:47 PM
@Forthas - I think there can be a perceived difference, depending. I feel like, by this perception, no one is allowed to criticize a design or, well, anything, to me.

I think like most of them really, in the features that I think are the ones that don't work for Lizard, with the exception of post Hush virus and The Batman animated series version.

I think to use the argument, basically of others having an opinion, isn't a strong argument for why should, what, not openly dislike something and say they do? If it isn't about you not liking that people dislike something, then I don't see much of a reason for your post to be, what I see, as aggressive.

@dagenspear -

". That does have yellow trim. In fact the only differences between the two is no yellow on the logo and different gloves. Everything else is exactly the same."

Actually one suit is black the other is blue and in the first image the cape is in fact two panels to make it more like wings while the other has a more commonly used one panel cape. Of course they have some similarities which goes to show that the look evolves over time.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/8/2023, 7:45 AM
@dagenspear - You have engaged in circular reasoning. You are trying to argue that I can't make an opinion about what people think because it is their opinion. I am commenting on the futility of the opinion not whether people have the right to make it.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 8/8/2023, 10:08 AM
@Forthas - I think moreso, it's me taking issue with the idea of how, I think, aggressive the opinion is about it, not you having an opinion on it that's not the same.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 8/8/2023, 10:10 AM
@Forthas - @Origame - said that, not me.
Origame
Origame - 8/8/2023, 10:49 AM
@Forthas - 1) nope. Both are black. You're confusing shading to add depth with actual coloring (they did the same to venom).

2) that's not how the cape looks normally though. That's the wing gliders that has always been the case. Show him just standing there and the cape looks just like in the animated series. And show animated batman gliding and his cape looks just like that comic.

3) evolution based on art style. Not actual design changes. If anything this shows the value of comic accuracy as BTAS is one of the most recognized and celebrated adaptations of the character ever.

4) I'm origame. Not dagerspear.

I don’t think anyone expected them to change the look of a character we’ve already seen in a previous film. But if they bring him to life in a Tom Holland movie as an actual 616 Lizard then yeah go ahead and make him different from the Amazing Spider-Man version.
It’s like Electro, I don’t think we expected a comic accurate costume because he didn’t have it in the amazing film.
