SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME - Here's Why The Movie Scrapped Plans For Comic-Accurate Take On The Lizard

Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding confirms that a comic-accurate Lizard was considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home and reveals why The Amazing Spider-Man design was left unchanged.

Had Spider-Man: No Way Home not been shot in the midst of the pandemic, chances are the movie would have been at least a little different. Due to travel restrictions, for example, neither Rhys Ifans nor Thomas Haden Church were able to shoot their respective returns as The Lizard and Sandman.

They were able to voice the characters, but recycled footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 was used to show both villains in their human forms.

The newly released "Art of" book for the 2021 threequel reveals that Marvel Studios considered completely overhauling The Lizard's appearance, delivering something more in line with the comic books.

That meant giving Curt Connors his purple pants and lab coat along with an elongated snout which was absent from his 2012 live-action debut. However, as much as COVID impacted Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was decided fairly early on that The Amazing Spider-Man's design would remain.

"We're looking to pull a character from another film and have this audience believe it's that same character," Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding explains. "If we change it too much, if we're changing bone structure, it doesn't feel like it's the character from that other movie, and we've lost the magic of The Multiverse."

"Having said that, all the explorations that [Visual Development Supervisor Ian Joyner] did were incredible," he adds. "Incorporating more costume and ripped and torn pants or shirts or lab coats, was also part of the fun exploration that I'm glad we did, even if it didn't end up serving the story."

Seeing a comic-accurate Lizard on screen would have been a blast, and it's a shame there wasn't room for him to evolve as the story continued. Curt Connors was largely a secondary villain, with the focus instead on Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Electro.

It's also worth noting, as we did well over a decade ago, that this Lizard design is how the villain looked when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first introduced him!

Gotta agree. Like, what's the point of celebrating the past if you need to change it so drastically.

Only change I liked was goblin, because that showed a nice progression. Of Norman battling for control and goblin winning out.

Sandman was fine, though just an excuse to not have the character in. And while electro works for an mcu styled version, it just didn't work for tasm 2 electro (and before you say that version sucked, didn't stop them from including him in the first place).

I think they could have gotten away with a redesign. The Lizard/Connors undergoes physical transformations in the comics. He gets bigger, stronger, and more animal-like. But any significant changes in character design would probably have to be explained within the film, and that would’ve taken a little extra time in an already really stuffed film.

Besides, Lizard was a super minor character in the movie. Remember when all the villains go up to Happy’s condo, and they just leave Lizard in the van?

@santoanderson - they ever mention why he stayed in the van?

@Arthorious - easier for the VFX Artist not to render him lol

@Dafoe - Makes sense, less work

Good. Consistency is better (although they did mess with it a little). I already like the TASM Lizard design anyway, I don't need it to be "comic-accurate".

Was this a question people needed answered?

I thought it was pretty obvious that’s why the character looked the same.

Geez! This silly comic accurate nonsense! NOBODY CARES!!!! These "not comic accurate" threads are the most ridiculous conversation in this entire community. Like someone once said...when you say comic accurate. Which comic? The character is drawn differently for each artist and the movie version should have the same license to interpret his look they way they think comes across best. Does he look like a lizard? Yes! End of the conversation!

@Forthas - you can't really equate artistic style to suit design. For the most part the suits do stay the same.

And guess what? When the comics go in radical directions, the fans complain there too. Like what happened when superman lost his red trunks in the new 52.

@Origame -

"When the comics go in radical directions, the fans complain there too"

SOME fans might complain. I suspect the vast majority don't. The reason that Warner Brothers is the ongoing crapshow it is today is that they listen to the vocal fans which do not represent the majority. I have NEVER heard anyone like or dislike a film because the costumes were not "comic accurate" which I still contend have no meaning.

Here is the ORIGINAL and therefore the most comic accurate design for Batman.

So I guess we should go back to that?

I don’t think anyone expected them to change the look of a character we’ve already seen in a previous film. But if they bring him to life in a Tom Holland movie as an actual 616 Lizard then yeah go ahead and make him different from the Amazing Spider-Man version.
It’s like Electro, I don’t think we expected a comic accurate costume because he didn’t have it in the amazing film.

I beg your pardon?

@TyrantBossMedia - lol, exactly. Also, best way to represent the Ditko version without delving into a parody costume.

@TyrantBossMedia - he was zapped into oblivion. When he came back he got his body back and was drawing power from another multiverse hence why his electricity is rooted in a different color. He said it feels different upon introduction

@TyrantBossMedia - Yeah, totally that.

@MyCoolYoung - soo... They made a reason up. Same could be done with the Lizard, huh?

@TyrantBossMedia - Came here to say the same thing. They changed Electro for the better, why not do the same for Lizard?
