While Hollywood is starting to slowly recover from the worst of the pandemic, it still hasn't been the most profitable year for blockbusters. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home has exceeded all expectations, becoming the first movie since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Deadline has now broken down how profitable the movie is likely to be, and as of today, it's already set to earn a $242 million net profit. However, providing theaters remain open over the coming weeks and months, Spider-Man: No Way Home's profit margin is likely to swing as high as $610 million.
That would make the threequel Sony Pictures' most profitable movie of all time, though some of the money is going to be shared with Disney/Marvel Studios.
As part of the new deal between the studios that allows them to share Spider-Man, Marvel Studios covered 25% of the production cost (believed to be $50 million), and will thereby receive 25% of the profits (an estimated $152.5 million based on these figures). That's not a bad return, and one that you have to imagine both studios will be happy with. Well, we certainly hope so, because that will ensure the two sides continue to work together, thereby keeping Peter Parker in the MCU.
Of course, it's already been reported that Marvel Studios and Sony have started work on Spider-Man 4, though there's no word on when exactly that will swing into theaters. The first trilogy saw us get a new movie featuring the web-slinger every two years, but Tom Holland has been vocal about wanting to take a little time off from playing the iconic Marvel Comics character.
