Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in theaters last December, earning widespread critical acclaim and breaking countless box office records. Despite that, the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios blockbuster failed to earn any serious awards recognition, with many fans left fuming that the Academy decided to snub the movie for "Best Picture" at this year's Oscars.
There's a strong chance the threequel will win the (mostly meaningless) "Fan Favorite" award as voted on by fans through social media, but how does star Andrew Garfield feel about this apparent snub? He's nominated for "Best Actor" for his work in tick, tick... Boom!, and while he chose his words carefully, the British actor believes the response from moviegoers is ultimately more than enough.
"I don't know," he initially responded when asked for his take on Spider-Man: No Way Home's unsuccessful Oscar campaign. "I mean, it's the sixth biggest movie in the history of movies. Making a film that a gajillion people want to see together is a miracle. Making a film that an awarding body loves is also a miracle. Sometimes those miracles overlap, and sometimes they don't. But I personally feel pretty satisfied with the audience response. I think that's plenty."
A movie making a lot of money doesn't automatically make it eligible for an Academy Award, but as the best-reviewed title of 2021, it's mind-blowing to see the blockbuster get overlooked. Well, in some respects. Unfortunately, the Academy ignoring anything even remotely superhero-related is the norm.
As for Garfield, we're certainly wishing him all the luck in the world this weekend, as he's an underrated talent who definitely appears to be bouncing back after a quiet couple of years.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is available on Digital now and hits physical platforms on April 12.
