UNCHARTED Star Tom Holland Reiterates Plans To Take A Break Before Potentially Returning For SPIDER-MAN 4

Tom Holland still hasn't officially committed to Spider-Man 4 as far as we're aware, and the actor has now reiterated his plans to take a break from acting before any future roles. Read on for details...

During Spider-Man: No Way Home's press tour, Tom Holland made it clear he was unsure about returning for Spider-Man 4. Many wondered if the actor was publicly negotiating for a bigger deal with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, and after the success of the threequel, we'd bet on them being willing to pay the actor whatever he likes!

For now, though, it appears Holland's biggest priority is taking a break after a very busy few years. Despite the pandemic, the actor quickly jumped from Cherry and his previous MCU appearances to shoot Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted back-to-back. Now, with just one final commitment in 2022, he's looking forward to stepping back from acting for a while.

Asked if he plans to go back to the web-slinger's world in the near future, he responded: "I am going back to shoot a TV show for Apple which I'm really excited about. It's a very, very challenging role written by the amazing Akiva Goldsman, and I think the script is some of the best I've ever read."

"I'm really, really excited to do that," Holland continued. "But I can confidently say, after I finish that TV show, I will be taking a break."

While Sony has previously pushed to release a new Spider-Man movie every two years, it's clear we won't be seeing Spider-Man 4 in 2023 at this rate! For starters, Jon Watts is moving on to Fantastic Four, so a decision will be made to either wait (which could see Spidey's next movie pushed even further down the calendar) or to find a new filmmaker. Either way, we're going to have to be patient.

Marvel Studios has previously confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is in active development. An animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, is also coming to Disney+, but it's unknown if Holland will star.

I'd be shocked if Holland comes back to voice Peter in that Freshman Year cartoon. They'll probably get the same guy who voiced Peter in What If?

I care less about the FF than I do Spiderman, so if they do to the FF what they did to Spiderman, completely change the side characters and alter formative events just because they've appeared in previous films, I probably won't care as much.

I mean in the MCU uncle Ben never told Peter "with great power", there are no Osbornes at all, Mary Jane Watson is a completely different person all together named Michelle Jones, and Spidermans entire film arc is reduced to him being Iron Mans protégé trainee until in the final film, where he's just an incompetent idiot for the sake of the plot, forgets every lesson he learned in previous films just to erase himself from the world.

So pretty much nothing like the character we know.

If they do that to the Fantastic Four... it better be good.

@ElricReturns - They likely wouldn't have to do what they did with Spiderman. Depending on your point of view, the recent FF movies weren't good. F4ntastic wasn't great and neither were the 2 that came before. They had moments, but that's it. We've had years of successful and not so successful Spidey films, but the story is well known...even by the casual fan probably at this point. I don't think you could say the same for the FF, so there likely will be hopefully a more accurate story. More along the lines of what we got pre-Avengers.

@The1st - I hope so.

@ElricReturns - in fairness, just because Aunt May told Peter that "With great power there must also come great responsibility" doesn't mean Uncle Ben never said it, before he died, it could very well be the case that he did and that was the reason Peter first became Spider-Man and Aunt May telling him in NWH was more of a reminder considering how in over his head he felt with all the villains and how tempted he was just to send them home to die. Having said that, yeah, we haven't seen MCU Uncle Ben which is a shame, would've been nice for him to get some acknowledgement especially during that rooftop conversation in NWH where the "great power" line is discussed. Although the line wasn't originally even attributed to Uncle Ben in the comics, that was retconned years later and it's not like Spider-Man became a vastly different character because of that change so I don't even think it's 100% necessary for Uncle Ben to say it.

We also don't know that there are no Osborns, just that Peter seemingly doesn't know Harry (which is fine, maybe they meet in college) and that Oscorp doesn't exist - maybe it couldn't compete with the likes of Stark Industries and went out of business, and with Stark Industries now under investigation and going through a rough time maybe Oscorp could resurface.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is even though there seem to be a lot of changes most of them can actually be reworked and fixed. Agreed about MJ though they should have just made Zendaya's character Mary-Jane rather than going for a weird half measure by giving her the same initials like it was some amazing plot twist in the first movie and then revealing her surname is actually Watson in the most recent one.

@ElricReturns - "in the MCU uncle Ben never told Peter "with great power""

Which was also the case in the original Ditko/Lee run. Ben giving the speech was a retcon that came later. So this is fine.

Mary Jane Watson is a character who has been wildly different in different universes since she's meant to portray counter-culture women. In the 70s it was a swinger. In the 2000s it was a nerd. In the 2010s it's an outsider. Michelle works a great alternative who still fills the same role perfectly.

Spider-Man wanting to be Tony's protege is an arc that ends in Homecoming. In Far From Home he's very much doing his own thing from the beginning, and he only brings up Tony like twice for important reasons.

He doesn't forget any lessons whatsoever, and every decision he makes in NWH is a direct result of the development he received in previous movies. Also it was mostly on Strange what happened.

You know, now seems like the perfect opportunity to go with a new actor to portray a more mature Peter. Can still be mcu Peter, but it could work having a new face here.

Shame since I think he's the best take on the character in live action so far, but he deserves a break.

Hopefully, we'll see more great stories with him before long.

You are 26, dude.
You dont have the luxury of "taking a break" with Spiderman, unless they are going in a completely different direction with the next movies, but Sony has showed in the past they preffer to rush reboots instead of waiting.

Still, I think he is just playing "hard to get", and after Uncharted bombs, he will be begging to wear the underoos again...

@TheHumanSpider2 - why is it so crazy that he wants to just chill for a bit? He’s been making marvel movies almost every year since 2015. Its not like we NEED Spider-man 4 by 2024 or everything's ruined… theres the Freshman year series that we’ll probably get in 2023, and a 2 part Across the Spiderverse story. I think we’ll all be okay if it takes a few years…

@DanFlashesShirt - He is in no position to "take a break".
I can wait, you can wait, we all can wait...Sony and Disney CANT WAIT.

I’m cool w this. Give him a break, and then he can properly portray a more grown up Spidey in his second trilogy.
