SPIDER-MAN 2 vs THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

SPIDER-MAN 2 vs THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being out for almost 3 months. I want to compare this to the Original Spider-Man 2.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Out of all the topics this is the hardest because I love Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, but also love Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Both are very talented actors and both play the character very well. Maguire has the emotional part down but, at sometimes I viewed him as a cry-baby. But, I could see where he was coming from losing a job, dealing with Uncle Ben's death partly his fault, and his true love engaged with his boss' son. Garfield totally has the whit, charm, and charisma down to be Spider-Man but, didn't give much of a good Peter Parker. Plus he was a bit on a stalker. It's pretty even on this one.

Winner: Draw

Villains

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 give us the disappointment of having three villains that didn't get equal screen time. The original Spider-Man 2 gave us the classic one villain; Doc Ock played Alfred Molina. Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Paul Giamatti played their respective roles in the 2014 film. The actors were fine but bad dialogue and poor character development made the villains not look so good. Doc Ock on the other hand was a strong villain, letting nothing get in his way.

Winner: Spider-Man 2

Love Interest

Emma Stone and Kristen Dunst both played their roles very well. Both have to deal with Peter Parker's weird tendencies. M.J. had to deal with Peter hiding from her and Gwen had to deal with her boyfriends, having a erratic conscience. Both move on, kinda. But, Gwen is willing to ditch the bs and move to another country. Gwen saves the day for Spider-Man and ends on getting killed in the process. Bottom line, Stone is more fun to watch than Dunst.

Winner: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Visuals

Both have amazing visuals, making Spider-Man a joy watch. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gave us great action scenes, good-looking villains, and terrific CGI. But, Spider-Man 2 had given us something just as good. The "Spidey-Cam" made Spider-Man's web-swinging look great.

Winner: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Music

Music is always important to a comic-book film. Hans Zimmer, one of the greatest music composers of all time, composed the Amazing Spider-Man 2 and honestly this wasn't one of his best scores. But, I do like the Spider-Man the Electro themes. Grammy-award winner Danny Elfman composed Spider-Man 2 and it gave the ultimate Spider-Man theme.

Winner: Spider-Man 2

Plot

Sorry I have nothing to say the plot for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was terrible.

Winner: Spider-Man 2

Conclusion

Both are great films in my opinion and I'm at a draw but Spider-Man 2 did a lot more right than the Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Overall Winner: Spider-Man 2

It's a tie for the first one. He only cried more than we expected in Spider-man 3. Minus Spider-man 3, his performance was very strong in the first two. Both of their Spider-mans aren't that far apart from each other in terms of which one is better.

I'm in agreement on all categories, but I think a way to judge the Peter Parker/Spider-Mans of both movies is to look at how the characters were used in each film.

As you said, Garfield nailed the wit and charm of Spiderman, but he's still a bit of a jerk, and his Peter was stalkery, which was weird. But what else? So far, in the film he still flaunts his powers in public, still fights with everyone he loves, dishonored his promise to a dying Capt. Stacy, and got his girlfriend killed. Not sure he should be winning anything.

Maguire's character has to go through juggling and losing jobs, failing to make rent, living on his own for the first time, being jealous of MJ's success, trying to soothe a vengeful best friend, and in his biggest moment, tells Aunt May the truth about how Ben died (this scene doesn't get enough credit for being amazing). So if he cried a lot, its because he had a lot of reasons to imo. He goes through an emotional ringer in Spider-Man 2, something Garfield can't say until the very end. I mean, the weight of living the double life, where he's losing more than he gains...it got so much Parker ACTUALLY QUIT. Spiderman 2 felt much more relatable and honest because of this. If that's not how we all feel sometimes, I don't know what is.

Gotta give Parker/Spiderman to Tobey and Spider-Man 2.

@AlphaAndDecima:

You really know what you're talking about. I've seen a lot of your comments throughout this site, and you're always spot-on with everything.

And yeah, I really don't see how "true Spidey fans" fail to understand what you just said. There was a clear division between Tobey's Peter/Spidey. Peter and Spidey are supposed to be two ENTIRELY different people. The line between Andrew's Peter/Spidey was blurred. You couldn't tell the difference. And Peter was never a douche in the comics, either. Webb clearly misunderstands the character.

Spider-man 2 is way better than TASM 2. I can sit through the entire film with out having a head ache or with out having a disgruntled look on my face which then turns to sadness.

To be fair to both movies because Spider Man 2 was so good you would have to do Spider-Man 3 vs. Amazing Spider Man 2.

tsmyzer, can you change both of them to a tie for the first one? I think you're overrating Andrew to the point where you're missing the significant aspects of Tobey's Spider-man.

There is a spectrum for spider-man movies. There is a dark serious side and a light hearted side. Spider-Man 2 hits directly in the center of the spectrum and thus is a great Spidey Flick. Webb's films have been to the extremes on both sides of the spectrum. The serious, and light hearted sides. Thus neither are as good as Raimi's 1&2.

I love this post and agree 100%. I JUST can't see Garfield as Peter and I've tried hard. It's basically the aura that comes off him.

Peter Parker gives off a feel like:"I'm this nerdy nice guy who just wants to do the best he can to help and when I'm Spidey, I joke to get rid of my tension. If someone dies however, the jokes end."

Andrew Garfield:"I'mma handsome rebel who has no outcast qualities to him so I'll stutter to make up for it. I wanna help people but not as much as I wanna bang Gwen. I'll make jokes when fighting bad guys because...it's fun! And if civilians in cars or cops get murdered? Still time to joke, hey where's my fireman's hat?"

Man, if there's one thing Peter Parker is it's respectful of the dead. He values every life and would not waste time mocking Alexi if innocent civilians were getting run over here and there. He definitely wouldn't waste time in puttin on a fireman's hat if civilians were getting fried. Also, he would NOT betray a dead man's promise.

I get it, Peter's a kid like us and that makes him relatable. Hell even after Uncle Ben died, Peter made some mistakes. However, the one thing he NEVER forgot was the importance of life and death. That was the one thing that didn't just make him relatable, but also inspirational. So that whole "he's just a kid so he can spit on Capt Stacy's grave" excuse is total bullshit and this change is against everything Spidey stood for.

The original 2 Raimi films were spot on about this and thus, despite less jokes, they got the part of Peter Parker that TRULY matters, down to pat.

First 2 Raimi movies: Better than both Webb movies.

Spider-man 3: matches ASM 2.

Another thing to add to the list: Does it make any sense when you picture A.G in your mind swinging in the sky or shooting webs? Looks kind of weird to me. People are so on his nuts for the correct interpretation of the character that they don't even seem to care about the looks or packaging of it.

Let me just start off by saying that I enjoyed all the spiderman movies. Some more than others of course. Have them all on blu-ray. I thought Toby was great. But I prefer Garfield. Toby might be more comic book accurate but after awhile it just starts to get annoying. By the time the 3rd movie came along, his character had not evolved or grown in anyway. Garfield's performance just seems more natural and real. As for the female lead, no contest. Gwen Stacy easy. The spiderman parts are easily better in asm2 than in spiderman 2. The way he moves, swings, fights and his jokes, that's spiderman! Now to the villains. This is where spiderman 2 is better! Not that I didn't like electro or green goblin in asm2 but doc ock is the best developed villain in any spiderman movie to this point. The rest of the supporting characters are fine in both series. But I do like Dane dehaan's green goblin better than Franco's version and dafoes's green power ranger. So to sum up, the original movies especially part 2 might have taken more care with the bad guys than the new movies do, but this series has shifted the focus more on the hero and I like that. Both series are good in my opinion but very different. As it should be. Who wants to see the same stories told again? Whether its Peter's arc or Harry's or whoever comes in now, Im interested to see where it goes next. Last but not least, I'll rate my best Spidey flicks from best to worst.

1. Asm2
2. Very close number 2 is Spidey 2
3. Asm1
4.spidey1
5. And finally Spidey 3

Again, I like all of them but if I had to rate them thats how I would do it. With me its about what movie left me feeling the most entertained and
smiling when I left the theater and that was up to this point asm2.

So you prefer a boring mother[frick]er to play Spider-man? I'm not surprised, the world is full of knuckleheads who were dropped on the floor repeatedly when they were babies.

As for the "annoying part" in connection with Spider-man 3, that's kind of obvious, which is why Spider-man fans ignore Spider-man 3 and just count Spider-man 1 and 2 instead.

Once again, that is not true at all. I respect opinions, but your opinion is wrong. Tobey's performances in Spider-man 1 and 2 and parts of Spider-man 3 with James Franco (Harry Osborn) were better than anything Garfield has done in TASM 1 and 2 so far and more memorable than you think. Both Spider-mans aren't that far apart from each other, the only thing that separates Tobey and Andrew's are the wise cracking side of jokes, but there are times when Spider-man doesn't joke around when something big is in trouble around him.

At least post with some logic sense when you make statements.

@3d

I didn't hear him joking when he was trying to calm electro down during the time square scene or when Gwen showed up during his fight with electro toward the end of the movie. Especially when harry showed up. He looked pretty serious I think. As much as I enjoyed the original movies, they were far from perfect. Those movies had plenty of cheesey moments which people seem to forget. Did you forget the freeze frame moment in Spidey 2? Or the fact he never kept his freaking mask on or the constant whining? Or that dumb excuse of why he was losing his power? Honestly, if the 2 asm movies had came out when the original movies did they would have been met with better results.

No movies are perfect, but those movies were far more entertaining than yours at that time, and they have also been more successful than yours so far. How is it Maguire's fault when it was just bad writing? If his Spider-man didn't make any jokes, blame it on the writers. But you know what, I still recall lines from Spider-man 2 such as "Here's your change" and "I have a knack for that" to piss Doc Ock off, which I thought felt more like Spider-man to me. So what point are you trying to make? Even with modern CGI, your second movie still doesn't blow Spider-man 2 out of the water.

"Or the fact he never kept his freaking mask on or the constant whining? Or that dumb excuse of why he was losing his power?"

They were justified in that movie. Tobey Maguire removed his mask during the train scene just so he can get a feel of how to stop the train with passengers on them before they could get hurt. He had to remove the mask so he could use his Spider-sense or whatever that thing was to see what was far away. With the mask on, it would've made the sight more difficult or something. But still, if you want to talk about how he never kept his mask on, what about Andrew? TASM 1 sure didn't make Peter keep his mask on the whole time either. Hypocrisy at finest.

Go pick up a Spider-man comic book called Amazing Spider-man No. 50. It's about "Spider-man No More." That's where the story comes from in terms of why Peter was losing his powers. It shows what Peter Parker's life would be about as a superhero and at the same time be a person who could try to live a normal life at fullest too. Peter Parker struggles internally and externally. At the same time, Raimi wanted to respect the source material, but keep the cheesy moments and plots of the villains in to make it a good movie.

Spider-man 1 and 2 have critically outperformed both TASM 1 and 2 so far. Some even say TASM 2 was so terrible that it made Spider-man 3 look like an Oscar material.

Point is I'm not trying to overrate any of our movies, but it's the TRUTH that the first two movies are still much better than your first two.
3DOldskool
3DOldskool - 6/24/2014, 8:32 PM
Oh wait, what is the constant whining you're talking about? I really don't understand. Do you mean the screams that he did when during the fights when he was getting hit back and forth by Doc Ock? Those things are justified just like they were in TASM 2. Andrew even screams when Electro blasts him with electricity.

I'm actually glad that Raimi isn't directing a Spider-man movie with Andrew Garfield. I can't imagine the horror of nightmare that it would bring upon me, since I was never a fan of Garfield for the role to begin with.

"he was too much of a loser!"

I know! It's not like Peter Parker was created to be some ordinary loser or something? Oh wait....

As for people complaining about him losing his powers? Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1. Read it. Both this issue and the movie were able to explain this without throwing it in the audience's face. I mean, it's like some people are complaning:"OOOH THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SCENE WHERE TOBEY TALKS TO HIMSELF ABOUT HOW EXACTLY HE'S LOSING HIS POWERS BECAUSE OF HIS EMOTIONS! WE NEED TO BE SPOONFED EVERYTHING!"
HOTSHOT
HOTSHOT - 6/25/2014, 7:40 AM
Also, as far as I can recall, Tobey only took off his mask when he needed to and kept his powers in check. Andrew pretty much just took off his mask in school for no reason, changed in a store which MAY HAVE HAD SECURITY CAMS, used his powers to mess around in Oscorp (which may also have cams), swang towards Gwen in broad daylight as Peter Parker ANNNND wrote 'I love you' on a bridge and swung off with Gwen in plain view of ALL OF NEW YORK!

The Amazing Spiderman 2 feels like Batman and Robin with better CGI and special effects.

Garfield's Spiderman doesn't joke with Electro in Times Square????

Spidey: His first line is "Yo, Sparkles, How you doin?", Garfield is trying so hard to put on a tough Brooklyn accent, it's so bad

Then there was, "My Dad left a briefcase, that's all I got a briefcase full of junk", when he said that I started laughing because you could tell he was trying so hard to put on an accent and it didn't work.
