SPIDER-MAN (2002) & Green Goblin Concept Art By Warren Manser

Recently, director Sam Raimi grabbed a few headlines for admitting that he too wasn't thrilled with Spider-Man 3, but instead of focusing on a negative let's look at alternate Green Goblin and Spidey costume designs from 2002's Spider-Man.

The other day, we took a look at Warren Manser's Daredevil and Elektra concept art, but today I wanted to look at his Green Goblin and Spidey concept art for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. I like Warren's alternate designs for Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin costume, especially the version in which the mask opens up like a visor on a knight's helmet.

"I really like the Goblin from the comics because he always reminded me of halloween. My first concepts were very close to the comic version because I wanted the character to retain his method of intimidation through fear. Technology would be secondary to psychology, and so he could look like a demon. But alas, he went the high tech route. There was much concern over whether or not the audience could see actor Willem Dafoe’s performance. I created quite a few concepts of the mask’s eye lenses articulating to reveal his eyes, and then the whole mask hinging open to reveal most of his face." - Warren Manser

Warren was very busy at the time 2007's Spider-Man 3 went into pre-production, so he only worked on that project for a brief time. You can see one piece of Venom (Topher Grace) concept art, at the bottom, that he designed for the film.

Venom Concept Art for Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man (2002) - Average teenager Peter Parker is transformed into an extraordinary super hero after he is accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider. When his beloved uncle is savagely murdered during a robbery, young Peter vows to use his powers to avenge his death. Deeming himself "Spider-Man," he sets about ridding the streets of crime, bringing him into conflict with malevolent super-villain "Green Goblin."

Actors: Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst & James Franco
Director: Sam Raimi * Screenwriter: David Koepp

Does anyone know where I can purchase the art from Alex Ross used in the opening credits of Raimi's Spider-Man movies? I'd love to get my hands on a few reproductions at some point.

I would have been more happy in the movie if they had used the mask they had, but treated it more like they did in that screenshot at the top of the article... It looked really creepy when you could see Dafoe's actual eyes, and even better when you could see his real mouth through the gaping maw of the helmet. Light that up some from inside to better show the actor underneath, let Dafoe put on his crazy face, and I think it would have worked well.

Who is choosing what designs make it into production? They are failing miserably in most cases. What class do I have to take? Who do I have to sleep with? (Pause) Who do I have to kill to make sure that this injustice is finally corrected? I am losing faith in humanity again...

@ABetterTomorrow And grass is green and the sky appears blue. What's your point? I could care less how many cooks are in the kitchen; just make sure my steak comes the way I ordered it. I don't care about film school etiquette or Hollywood 101.

The budget of making a costume is not an issue on this big budget tent poles

@ABetterTomorrow "Tough cookie"? Now you made your second assumption, and, you're equally wrong this time. I'm not trying to be tough, I'm just stating my opinion. Why nod and say "okay" when, clearly from my original post, I disagree with the results? Better yet, why not just follow your own advice when you saw my comment? The comment was a collection of rhetorical questions that was meant to be humorous for those who know me. You decided to be all serious and state the obvious as if it was your job to do so. Thanks, but, no thanks.

@ABetterTomorrow Who said I was angry? While my delivery sounds abrasive over text, it's just how I speak. This is nothing.

You seem to be the one catching feelings. As it stands, you're the one being condescending and resorting to petty name calling. Why? Because I made a joke that you didn't get? Because I didn't accept your unsolicited education? Who knows? Who cares?

Man...why is it that the majority of the time, concept art is far and away (almost infinitely) better than the actual product we are given?

Ugh. Studios would be smarter to try using concept art more often than they do.

Was never one hundred percent pleased with the films Goblin but then again I would have hated to see something like the comics just for the sake of being loyal to them rather than from a serious of tests. For me they were right not to use the animatronic mask seen in the test footage as although it looked like a comic book GG it felt too out of place, too much like something from a different film. Either way the question would have still stood as to why Oscorp decided to make scary ass masks to go with their military gliders and flight suits but hey ho. All this aside I fail to see why these images and the Daredevil ones are on the news page? They were all available when the DVDs came out near the start of the decade. Is it that the artist has made a few comments? I'm not saying it's not interesting but if you are trying to purport to be a news site you'd think editors or what have you may steer contributors closer in the direction if relevance, no?

the original spiderman movies are generally on par with the TDK trilogy, 2 good films followed by a huge stinker.

Spider-Man 1 is still a great film. Not as good as the masterpiece that is Spider-Man 2...but still good.

I've said it before, but Spider-Man 2 is my favourite CBM of all time. 2nd probably V for Vendetta...3rd maybe Iron Man 1
