SPIDER-MAN 4 Reportedly Set To Begin Filming This Fall; Justin Lin May Be In The Mix To Direct

We have some updates on Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up, which looks set to begin shooting this September or October...

We're still waiting on Sony/Marvel to make an official announcement regarding Spider-Man 4 (as in, the fourth solo movie featuring Tom Holland's take on the wall-crawler), but reliable insider Jeff Sneider has shared some long-awaited production updates in the latest edition of his newsletter.

The news broke last night that the third season of Euphoria has been put on hold, and Sneider believes this was at least partially down to star Zendaya's commitment to return as MJ for the next Spider-Man movie, which will likely begin filming this September or October.

No Way Home director Jon Watts is not expected to return, and Sneider has heard that Justin Lin - who helmed five of the Fast and Furious movies as well as Star Trek Beyond - was in the mix to direct, and may still be. There are sure to be other filmmakers in contention, however, including the previously-rumoured Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods).

Sony's Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige are rumored to have had some disagreements when it comes to the overall plot, with the latter hoping to scale the Multiverse elements back for a smaller-scale story. Rothman, meanwhile, is said to want to capitalize on No Way Home's success by bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back as their respective takes on Peter Parker.

We don't know if these issues have been resolved, but it's obviously a good sign if the movie does have a scheduled shoot date.

Holland will, of course, be back as the MCU's Spidey, but the actor is believed to be "growing wary" of playing the iconic hero, so this could be his final time in the red and blue suit.

During a recent interview, Holland said he feels that he's become too used to the "safety blanket of Spider-Man."

"I want to do things that scare me, things that make me uncomfortable. When you do what we do, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. This show is a perfect example of that. Ben is consistently telling me, if you don’t commit, they won’t believe you. The reason I wasn’t committing is because I was afraid. I’ve never done anything like this before. I got so used to the Marvel machine and the safety blanket of Spider-Man, feeling like I was protected. So, doing something like this was incredibly scary, but because it was so scary, it was so fulfilling and so rewarding. Going forward, if there’s something that I feel like I can’t do, I want to do that one. Playing a sort of stupid English doofus is not what I want to do because that’s my life, right?"

No Way Home scribes Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are currently working on the script, but we still don't know which of the Wall-Crawler's fearsome foes will be causing problems for Peter and co.

Most of Spidey's major bad guys have already been utilized in previous films (Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, etc), but a recent rumor claimed that the still untitled sequel will feature a villain we haven't seen in live-action yet.

Lin as a director is cool, i enjoyed his f and f movies and star trek beyond is quite unappreciated imo.

i just hope the writer is a capable one.

@UniqNo - only thing I didn't like about Beyond was that they were supposed to be on discovering unknown space, yet there was a massive space station in their way

UniqNo - 3/26/2024, 2:17 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I can see that. But to me it felt like the most 'Star Trekkie'of that reboot series. I liked JJ's entries aswell but some of the charm wasn't present until Lin's (IMO)

@UniqNo - I agree. Beyond did feel like original Trek. They actually went to an unknown planet and got into trouble there. Smart move to move the action away from Earth.

Please keep it street level. I'm ok with cameos from other street level heroes but we don't need Avengers showing up.

I'd prefer no Miles but if he is introduced don't have him suiting up for a few movies

I actually like the idea of Miles & Peter bonding before the firmer suits up or even gets powers for atleast a movie or 2.

Listen when I said I'd rather see someone else other than Jon Watts direct, I didn't mean Justin Lin, with all due respect to both.

@Fares - while I like Lin , I agree

Drew Goddard FTW!!

Fares - 3/26/2024, 12:37 PM
@TheVisionary25 - That would definitely be a more interesting choice.

My fantasy, no chance in hell, gather all the dragon balls to make it happen pick would be Edgar Wright. Hell, I'd be fine if Spidey stops being in a shared universe if that would be Wright's condition to take the gig.

Other than that, I don't think I have a top pick. I just want a person who brings a distinctive, palpable style and voice to the work, sorta like how you know you're watching a Guy Ritchie film without being told who directed it.

I generally have no problem with Watts and Lin, I enjoy the movies they make, but when they're on a big budget project, they feel to me like they're just vehicles for the Studio's will without significantly adding a personal touch of their own, and I just want more than that for Spidey.

TheVisionary25 - 3/26/2024, 12:46 PM
@Fares - I do think they have touches of their style here & there in the more big budgets films but maybe not to the extent you want

Just see the Mysterio Illusion scene or Vukture Car scene in FFH & Homecoming respectively in regards to Watts.

However , Goddard doesn’t really have a distinct style either and Wright would be great but not gonna happen.

Yesterday's "rumor" pointed suggested Holland will be back for Avengers 5, and Secret Wars.

Anyway, if Sony knows what's good for them, they will go with Feige's idea(s).

@TheloniousJay - that's the thing. Sony doesn't know what's good for them

@dagenspear - oh I agree. Their team that runs the animated side is leagues above in competence over live action movie side

As long as it's not the last guy, I liked fast five but that was it. My main worry for the film is who is writing it

Don't undo the NWH ending with MJ remembering his ass immediately.

If you want them to begin the journey to get to know one another again, that is fine. Start planting seeds.

But Peter should come back around to MJ after some time.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/26/2024, 12:30 PM
@GhostDog - I agree

Have him form new connections and then have him come back around to MJ & Ned if need be.

Seeing him interact with new character could help the character develop and grow more.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/26/2024, 1:08 PM
@GhostDog - if that whole Peter Parker persona is slowly fading rumor is true I’d like it if over time him reconnecting with MJ is what brings Peter back.

Him getting to know her or her getting to know him rather is what ultimately makes him realize both is important
KWilly
KWilly - 3/26/2024, 12:14 PM
MJ back?

User Comment Image

Unless it's just a quick cameo where Peter accidentally crossed paths with her, I don't want her to be back. Completely negates the ending to NWH.

Let Peter meet new people. In fact, I wonder if Holland is requiring that she be part of the 4th one lol
Vigor
Vigor - 3/26/2024, 12:23 PM
@KWilly - but even when spiderman in the comics had other love interests, MJ was always in the periphery
Thats his destiny. So it only makes sense to have her in all the movies even if their lives take different trajectories between spiderman 4 and 5, before finally in 6 they reunite
dagenspear
dagenspear - 3/26/2024, 3:45 PM
@KWilly - That doesn't at all negate the ending. It only does if it quickly undoes the mind wipe. Nothing to freak out about.

Just call Sam Raimi…. You know it makes sense

@Spike101 - What was the last good movie he directed or produced?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/26/2024, 12:48 PM
@Unites - Multiverse of Madness. I'm leaving out whether the writing was good or bad, but the direction was good imo. Raimi has a great style

@Unites - Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3 does it for me.
Spike101
Spike101 - 3/26/2024, 4:04 PM
@dagenspear - that’s fair enough. I actually don’t like this version and much prefer Raimi’s version. Tom Holland is the only bit I do like though, the writing, direction and cast are terrible.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/26/2024, 6:23 PM
@dagenspear - true. Still, because of the good direction the overall movie for me is good as well (despite it's pitfalls)
dagenspear

@Spike101 - In a lot of ways I think similarly, but shifting up that way, I'm not sure fits.

@bkmeijer1 - I don't think it is really.

@dagenspear - fair. I can see the pitfalls I mentioned be the cause for that
Spike101
Spike101 - 3/27/2024, 8:39 AM
@dagenspear - again I’d tend to agree, with all these things when they are going in the wrong direction it’s better to still with what you have and gradually bring it around rather than take the DC route of continuous reboot, which just results in disenfranchising their fans.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/26/2024, 12:21 PM
I haven’t enjoyed Justin Lin’s movies, but I don’t think it’s because he’s a bad director. As long as it’s written well and is street level instead of multiverse nonsense I’d be interested.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/26/2024, 12:24 PM
Oh and, bringing back Zendaya is so stupid and ruins the ending of No Way Home. Was really hoping for Black Cat as the female lead in this, played by someone who can display more than two emotions in her acting which we all know Zendaya cannot.
Vigor
Vigor - 3/26/2024, 12:33 PM
@mountainman - if the rumor that Peter Parker is fading mentally into background while spiderman steps up, it would be perfect time to introduce Black Cat. Perfect time.
And besides spiderman needs another love interest to diversify his experience before he goes back to MJ or dates Gwen.

The perfect spiderman 4 is that rumor I just stated plus black cat, daredevil, and Kingpin. And then a multiverse related after credits. In the after credits maybe spiderman gets sucked into a portal and ends up on battleworld and runs smack into the symbiote.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/26/2024, 12:39 PM
@Vigor - Yeah wait until the 5th one to bring MJ back. I get that Zendaya is popular with some people, but she can’t impact the box office too much and they can cast another popular actress as black cat.

I’m ok with the Peter fading to background arc. After he lost everything, he put everything into his spider-man persona. It should be more mature and dark and black cat compliments that.

And if it’s about Kingpin becoming mayor and outlawing super heroes as has been rumored, then he is forced to get back into his Peter persona.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 3/26/2024, 3:42 PM
@mountainman - Would feel random to not have her in it at all. Black Cat is more teen like than mature.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/26/2024, 3:47 PM
@dagenspear - She doesn’t remember Peter. It would seem random to undue the ending of No Way Home so quickly.
