Spider-man Reboot: Why I am worried.

Spider-man Reboot: Why I am worried.

It seems as if they're doing the same thing all over again.

First article. Yay.

Well first things first, i completely love the first Spiderman film. Being a 10 year old kid going to see live action adaption of his favorite comic book character, was a pretty big deal. Although i didn't look at movies then the way i do now, my feelings and reviews for the movie have not changed. They did good with the sequel, which is always a plus. Then the 3rd went a little bit too far in my taste, too many different plots that were all resolved in half an hour each. Well needless to say, a reboot was needed. And definitely a good call. Although i love Tobey Maguire for how he played the role.

At the beginning of the project, i was very hopeful. The reason why i was hopeful is because the script was the one of Ultimate Spiderman series, which depicts Peter Parker as a high school kid. This was their first option because after the 2nd movie, Tobey Maguire was already being teased and such for being too "old" for the role. So having a younger cast will make the story flow more without pressure.

The actors whose names were thrown out early were Jake Gyllenhaal, Logan Lerman, Taylor Lautner, and Anton Yelchin to name a few. Out of those names, the one that stuck out to me was Logan Lerman, being that he's 15-16 years old, and a somewhat promising actor. Of course after further thought, his acting style is more of a cocky teenager type, and i couldn't see him portray a geek who has little social life. Everyone else i eliminated because of personal choice, except for Anton Yelchin. The guy can act! He does great playing a little kid victim, refer to his role in Alpha Dog, and although he's older than Lerman, being only 21 makes him still a good age to play the role. I was committed to him, and was positive that that's the choice they will go for. Wrong.

They decided to go with Andrew Garfield. I didn't even know who the guy was, but as soon as i searched him, one factor stood out to me. Birth-year: 1983, that makes him... 27 years old! Young for an actor, but not for the script they had intended. So doing further research, i then realized that because the actor chosen was a lot older than the required age for the script, they decided to change the script, and make him a college student again, but still claim that the movie is based on Ultimate Spiderman. So i guess one of the factors they decided to change was, of course, his age. The rest of the cast? They look great, and i'm sure there won't be a problem with the supporting cast. Since it's still based on the series, one thing i'll say i'm excited about are the villains. The Lizard is said to be the first villain, and i'll be on the lookout for Beetle(who was is the video game) and Mysterio, mostly because i want to know how they're ever going to get his character adapted to the movie world.

In conclusion; to me, they're just doing the same thing all over again, and i just can't imagine that. Reboot or not, they'll be headed to the same direction as before with Garfield's age. Which is my biggest concern. The script has gotten a lot of praise though, apparently Entertainment Weekly alluded this script with Christopher Nolan's adaption of the Batman series. Now that's a huge claim, and I'm not sure if they can live up to it. As a spidey fan, if i said i'm going to skip this movie, it would be a lie, i'm going to watch it regardless, although in my head it's going to fail.

I think That casted to old again...they should have cast someone a kid about 14, so the actor could grow into the role. Think Harry Potter.

Has the Lizard been confirmed? I know Conners is in the movie, but has his alter ego been confirmed or was that all internet gossip? Where did you hear the script had gotten changed to him being in college? I have never seen that on any website. But any how, I'm giving this movie a chance. I felt that spideman 1 and 2 where great, 3 was decent but personally I thought spidey was too whinney, and not comedic enough in the series. And MJ got kidnapped/threatened too much. Also, Tobey just wasnt a good Peter/Spiderman to me, so I'm hoping for this to be more faithful to the wise cracking, non whinney, web head, plus the Ultimate Spiderman series is pretty good.

I have doubts about the film, period. Still not all for Garfield as Spider-Man and I still think the director shoulda have Emma Stone play Mary Jane.

when is a CBM ever based around just one comic? (except watchmen) they will pull ideas together from different series and create a new film canon. As long as we can identify the characters as the characters from the comics who cares if they take some liberties with age or plot?

""THE MOVIE IS GOING TO BE WAYY BETTER THAN ANY OF THE SAM RAIMI MOVIES NOW BACK OFF THIS MOVIE.""

What are you baseing this on? The fact that there budget is literally 4 times less then the budget of Raimis films, or the fact that the director has never done an action nor a block buster film

Ok everyone, apparently they're still going to do a young Peter Parker, but they're going to rush his growing phase in the first movie. They're looking for a child actor age 4-6 to play a young Peter, then Garfield will take his place later on in the movie. This would be good ONLY if Garfield doesn't show up until the last 10 minutes or so, as in he only becomes Spiderman at the end of the movie, this will give them more flexibility for the sequels. I mean in that case the first one would be sort of boring, but not to me, i'd love to see him grow up throughout the entire movie. I believe that's a long-shot though, most likely they'll rush his development and have Garfield play him a good 2/3 of the movie.

@Frogman Well i won't even answer than Liberty with plot question, because i don't know about you, but plot is very important and you can't just mess around with it, i.e. adding everything you like from various comics. As far as age goes, it's important in this movie because of the Maguire age problem that started circling after Spiderman 2. And it's been said and proven before that if you start with a young cast, it can grow into a long series. Like Harry Potter. 7 movies strong, and no one is too old for their role. With Spiderman, that's crucial, because when Stan Lee created him, he was supposed to be the only Superhero with a sidekick's age. Having the actor that plays him at the age of 30 at only the 2nd movie is just off.

I don't like anything about this reboot. For me it'll be some kind of "high school spider-musical".
Everyone in the world (non comic book readers)at this time knows the story behind Spider-man, his origin and stuff, But what they don't know is the actual modern Spider-man.
In my opinion a new Spidey movie has to show us a grown up Peter, married, with a child and teaching at the university.
I want to see an old Spidey not again a teenager.
Enough with that "for the new generations" crap. Ben10 is for the new generations! I'm 35! I want the Spidey i grown up with!

agree dude! we should all forget about this movie have 1 person buy it or rent it on dvd and watch it once and invite their friends over... that way hopefully this movie won't be a success and sony will beg marvel to buy spidey's rights back so marvel can get it right!

BTW @AJVersatility19 good article dude and welcome to CBM!

Well you know how they do these things. Like in the first Spiderman films, they had Kirsten Dunst, a natural blonde play the redhead, and Bryce Dallas Howard, a natural redhead, play the blonde. Mary Jane Watson isn't in the reboot, not the first film anyway, and if she is, i got money on it that the actress is not a natural redhead. Anyway @Elhemian If there was to be a grown Peter with wife and kids, i wouldn't like it to be shown in the first movie, maybe in the 3rd or 4th. I'd like to see an actor grow into the role instead of skipping stories. @theotherside as much as i would like this movie to be a bomb, it most likely won't be. I mean 3D, Spiderman, everyone but people who pay attention like us, would watch it in theaters. I'd happily do what you suggested, rent it, and have a Spiderman night, spared no expenses.

By liberties with the plot I meant its not going to follow the comics exactly. They might combine 616 with Ultimate, use some elements of both. Spidey probably won't fight the villains in the same order he did in the comics, people might die in different ways to in the comics. Change will happen, in the end its a separate universe.
AJVersatility19
AJVersatility19 - 12/23/2010, 4:24 PM
@Frogman I understand that, they NEVER follow the comic exactly, and i NEVER expect any movie to. If i don't like a movie that's based on a comic or a book, it wouldn't be because they didn't follow the book/comic. That's already expected. That being said, i'd much rather a screenwriter make up his own story(to a large extent), and not just compiling elements of comic books he's read/liked. It just takes away from the basis of the original stories. Like let's say they take 2 villains that never met in Spidey world, and they think of a way to connect those two, rather than having those two villains co-exist in the same universe without relation. The comic book can do that because they take it one step at a time, for a movie, they should have some relation. That's how i'd do it.
