First article. Yay.
Well first things first, i completely love the first Spiderman film. Being a 10 year old kid going to see live action adaption of his favorite comic book character, was a pretty big deal. Although i didn't look at movies then the way i do now, my feelings and reviews for the movie have not changed. They did good with the sequel, which is always a plus. Then the 3rd went a little bit too far in my taste, too many different plots that were all resolved in half an hour each. Well needless to say, a reboot was needed. And definitely a good call. Although i love Tobey Maguire for how he played the role.
At the beginning of the project, i was very hopeful. The reason why i was hopeful is because the script was the one of Ultimate Spiderman series, which depicts Peter Parker as a high school kid. This was their first option because after the 2nd movie, Tobey Maguire was already being teased and such for being too "old" for the role. So having a younger cast will make the story flow more without pressure.
The actors whose names were thrown out early were Jake Gyllenhaal, Logan Lerman, Taylor Lautner, and Anton Yelchin to name a few. Out of those names, the one that stuck out to me was Logan Lerman, being that he's 15-16 years old, and a somewhat promising actor. Of course after further thought, his acting style is more of a cocky teenager type, and i couldn't see him portray a geek who has little social life. Everyone else i eliminated because of personal choice, except for Anton Yelchin. The guy can act! He does great playing a little kid victim, refer to his role in Alpha Dog, and although he's older than Lerman, being only 21 makes him still a good age to play the role. I was committed to him, and was positive that that's the choice they will go for. Wrong.
They decided to go with Andrew Garfield. I didn't even know who the guy was, but as soon as i searched him, one factor stood out to me. Birth-year: 1983, that makes him... 27 years old! Young for an actor, but not for the script they had intended. So doing further research, i then realized that because the actor chosen was a lot older than the required age for the script, they decided to change the script, and make him a college student again, but still claim that the movie is based on Ultimate Spiderman. So i guess one of the factors they decided to change was, of course, his age. The rest of the cast? They look great, and i'm sure there won't be a problem with the supporting cast. Since it's still based on the series, one thing i'll say i'm excited about are the villains. The Lizard is said to be the first villain, and i'll be on the lookout for Beetle(who was is the video game) and Mysterio, mostly because i want to know how they're ever going to get his character adapted to the movie world.
In conclusion; to me, they're just doing the same thing all over again, and i just can't imagine that. Reboot or not, they'll be headed to the same direction as before with Garfield's age. Which is my biggest concern. The script has gotten a lot of praise though, apparently Entertainment Weekly alluded this script with Christopher Nolan's adaption of the Batman series. Now that's a huge claim, and I'm not sure if they can live up to it. As a spidey fan, if i said i'm going to skip this movie, it would be a lie, i'm going to watch it regardless, although in my head it's going to fail.
