THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Star Andrew Garfield Reflects On "Beautiful" Experience And Clashing With Amy Pascal

Andrew Garfield may be unwilling to confirm whether he'll return as Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but he's now reflected on making The Amazing Spider-Man movies and behind-the-scenes clashes.

Once upon a time, Sony Pictures had big plans for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. A third and fourth movie had been announced, while a Sinister Six spinoff was also on the way (it would have included Andrew Garfield's wall-crawler and been directed by Drew Goddard).

When The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed - mostly due to a budget that spiralled wildly out of control - the decision was made to reboot the franchise, hence why Tom Holland's Peter Parker was able to swing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Captain America: Civil War was released.

Garfield, who continues to deny that he's going to return as his version of Spidey in Spider-Man: No Way Home, isn't bitter, though. Instead, he looks back at that time with a sense of gratitude.

"It was only beautiful," Garfield tells Variety"I got to meet Emma [Stone] and work with her and Sally Field. I had karma with Amy Pascal, who was a mother figure, and we would fight, but ultimately, we loved each other on a deep level. We tried to meet as much in the middle as we could in terms of why I wanted to do this role, and what her needs were as the head of the studio."

The piece on Garfield actually includes comments from Pascal, and she also speaks positively of the actor's time as the iconic Marvel Comics superhero.

"I had worked with him a long time ago on a film called ‘The Other Boleyn Girl,’ but it was after David [Fincher] and I saw him in a series called ‘Red Riding’ that I knew he was a genius," the executive recalls. "He perfectly captured the inner life of a high school student as Peter. He exudes such pathos and such intelligence. I think everything good is coming to Andrew."

At this point, we're 99.9% sure that Garfield will reprise the role in the next Spider-Man movie, though everyone involved seems to be going to great lengths to keep it a surprise. Despite that, rumours persist that the second trailer will feature all three versions of the webbed wonder, and we're fully expecting that to arrive in time for Eternals this November (providing there are no further delays).

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to be released in theaters on December 17, later this year!

''I think everything good is coming to Andrew.''

Oh yeah, people are definitely gonna take this as ''see, even Pascal now confirms Andrew is the next Spider-Man movie!''

I think the tone was wrong but that is why there's a director.

Kevin Feige was spot on when his emails leaked. You can be sure Andrew is returning with a different approach to the character.

@MadThanos - agreed the tone was ALL WRONG for those films

Garfield is a fantastic actor. He just wasn't Peter to me. He even looked the part in many ways, but I still didn't feel it. The world they tried to build in the first film just didn't feel like Spider-man's world. They tried too hard to distance themselves from the Raimi films. I can't blame them, but it just didn't hit for me. It's not all bad though.

The chemistry with Gwen was perfect though. That real life relationship Garfield and Stone had was electric on film. Also, the first person POV stuff was pretty cool. At least they did a good job with the suit in the second film.

@DarthOmega - he was too edgy and cool as Peter then would just stutter to make himself look like a nerd I think that’s why it didn’t resonate with people

Oh Amy Pascal, a scourge on the industry.
She's a producer first and foremost, creative mind second. Meanwhile she's not good at either and exudes an ego bigger than the Chrysler building.

The fact she snatched up Spider-Man for her own production company shows how she attempts to leech of the ones she used to bully but are successful nowadays.

He is a fantastic actor, I think the scripts really failed him in both movies. They wrote Peter like an asshole and made him get super emotional too often. I also think he was too old to play highschool peter parker but that's because every studio was hiring guys and gals in the mid 20's to play high schoolers. Both his movies weren't that good but I put next to none of the blame on him for how they turned out.

Reminds of the good old days when there was that guy who would spam Spider-Man articles with 'proof' that TASM was great and how Webb was a genius then throw in the obligatory picture of Parker as drawn by Steve McNiven.

Also takes me back to "Killian is the Mandarin because..."

I ultimately think Garfield was miscast in the role but I do like things about Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 for sure.

Not a huge fan of ASM series but I always loved the way Spidey fought in them.

He fought LIKE A SPIDER

In the minority that actually loved Andrew's HS Peter I guess. As someone that was still in HS at the time, this version of Peter & the environment he was in felt the most real and relatable especially compared to Holland's.

Garfield is a huge fan of the character, and I remember his reaction to seeing the first Avengers film. I just really hope he's in the film, I think it would be great for him as a fan.

"He perfectly captured the inner life of a high school student as Peter. He exudes such pathos and such intelligence."

Dude was almost 30 at the time. I didnt feel that he embodied a teenage parker. That scene of supposed sexual tension w/ Emma Stone was absolute cringe. The best thing TASM had going for it was the suit.

I can't help but think this guy really isn't in NWH. If so it might be a Bohner situation. I'm just saying, don't get your hopes up too high.
