Things I want to see in the Spider-Man reboot.

Things I want to see in the Spider-Man reboot.

There are many things people want to see in the new Spidey Film, and here I’m going to go through everything that I want to see. First things first:

A quick origin story: For the love of god, we all know how Spider-Man gets his powers, radioactive spider bite, Uncle Ben dying, yada yada yada. We don’t want yet another reboot that focuses on same retelling of the same story. What I want to see is the origin story happen in a series of flashbacks, or maybe a dream sequence at the start of the film, just to get us up to date. I want the film to open with a voiceover from Peter Parker, showcasing him getting bitten by a spider, and then Uncle Ben’s death. That would get the origin out of the way in less than 5 minutes. Then perhaps later on Peter has a nightmare about Uncle Ben dying, and that would be a great way to show us Ben actually giving Peter the speech, instead of just being told about it.

A perfect Peter Parker: I don’t plan to get too much into this, but basically what I want to see is a Peter that is faithful to the comics, dorky, nerdy, basically a genius (We all have to admit that TASM captured this aspect of Peter better than the Raimi trilogy). That is all I ask. Out of all the actors being thrown around to play him, the one I like the most is Dylan O’Brien. He is the one that I am most familiar with. I believe he could make a faithful Peter for many reasons, he looks the part, he has played a Peter Parker-esque character in The Internship, he plays a character with a very similar sense of humour as Peter in Teen Wolf, and he has proved he can hold up a blockbuster in The Maze Runner. He has expressed interest in playing Spider-Man for years, so obviously he his a fan of the character. A couple of other actors who I wouldn’t mind seeing include; Josh Hutcherson (check out his scene test for THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN), Logan Lerman, or Dave Franco. I honestly wouldn’t be too surprised if Marvel cast a generally unknown actor for the part though.

New villains: I wouldn’t mind a Green Goblin or a Venom story done right, but what I really want to see is villains we haven’t seen before, so Shocker, Alastair Smyth, Mysterio, Kraven, Chameleon and such. Shocker could just be in the start of the movie as a regular bank robber with special gauntlets, and maybe Mysterio could be the main villain. What I don’t want to see is too many villains. So maybe just one, or even two would be a good idea, or else the movie might suffer the same agonising fate SM3 and TASM2 did.

J. Jonah Jameson. Just do it Marvel. I don’t need to give you any reasons. But if I was to make a suggestion on who to cast, I’d tell you to look no further than Bob Odenkirk. *cue J.K. Simmons fans outraging*. Seriously though, everybody says that nobody will ever top J.K. Simmons portrayal but....how do we know? I’m all for not getting Simmons back, and for casting somebody else who could do a better job. I think Odenkirk has the skill to bring JJJ to life, he may not look as much like him as Simmons, but I believe in quality over appearance.

Spider-Sense scenes: Okay this isn’t as important as some of the others, but we all have to admit, some of the coolest moments in Spider-Man films have been the slow-motion Spider-Sense scenes. In ‘Spider-Man’ we had the hallway fight scene, in ‘Spider-Man 2’ we had the car flying into the cafe scene, and in Spider-Man 3 we had the wedding ring scene, in the middle of the fight with Harry. In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ we had the Electro fight scene, and Gwen’s death scene, we all have to admit, both of those scenes were amazing. Please guys, just give us at least one bad-ass slow motion scene.

First person Web-Swinging: Can we all admit that the first person trailer released for TASM was pretty cool? And then the whole scene was deleted from the movie. All I want is at least one scene as cool as that trailer was. Please guys, make this happen.

Toned down story. Save the saving of the world for Avengers movies. Give him a more laid back story, maybe even him tracking down thugs that will lead him to Kingpin or something. He is after all a street level hero. You could have many villains portrayed as thugs. Hell, you could just have Kingpin and Hammerhead as the main villains and the movie could still be amazing.
A kickass suit; Similar to TASM2’s suit, but I’d like it a bit less shiny. Or maybe even a completely different one, as long as the suit looks good I’m sure we will be okay.

Norman Osborn: Maybe not even as a primary villain, have him working behind the scenes. Norman Osborn plays a big role in Marvel comics, and is often the mastermind behind many evil schemes. I want this to be explored. I don’t want to have him as a one off villain; I want him to be more long-term. Don’t kill him off until a later film. He could even be the villain for other films or tv shows.
A worthy title: One thing The Amazing Spider-Man got right was the title. By using ‘The Amazing’ in front of Spider-Man it easily differentiated between the last trilogy of movies. This reboot will of course start from scratch and obviously can’t use “The Amazing” in the title. But some titles it could use include “The Spectacular Spider-Man”, “Web of Spider-Man” etc. They could also go down the route of subtitles and could go with ‘Spider-Man: With Great Power’ or ‘Spider-Man: Kravens Last Hunt’ etc.

So what do you think? Have I left anything important out? Don’t hesitate to let me know, sound off below.

"I want to see is a Peter that is faithful to the comics, dorky, nerdy, basically a genius (We all have to admit that TASM captured this aspect of Peter better than the Raimi trilogy)"

Name just ONE way that Andrew Garfield's portrayal proved that he was a genius. Just one.
Oh, you mean how he stole his father's equation to show to Dr. Connors and lied about it being his own? or how about when he made his artificial webbing (also stolen from one of his father's formulas, btw). Or what about how he made the actual webshooters. Oh wait, those were made with the Oscorp microprocessor/biocable that he stole. Or maybe when he made that device that unlocks his bedroom door for uncle ben or aunt may to come in because he's too lazy to open the door himself, which he probably found the instructions for on Bing. Not to forget that geniuses also don't break promises for their own selfishness. Yup, definitely. But in all seriousness, I too would like a faithful adaptation of spidey.

Your outline of spidey's solo film is similar to what I am expecting from the movie myself. However, I really hope that the movie focuses more on creating Peter's struggle to balance school life and life as spiderman than on the aftermath of the superhero world being divided into two factions, the latter of which Marvel will most likely go for in order to connect the film better to its already established universe. I'd also be open to Riggs. TWD actors are widely underappreciated imo.

@JFerguson Theres also the fact that Peter had to use youtube to figure out how to fix his webshooters. Yeah sure, everything you said was true, but i cant recall Tobey Maguire being even a slight bit genius, at least Garfield came close.

I'm probably the only one, but I want Norman Osborn in the MCU....

The last time we really saw him was in Spider-Man 1, back in 2002. I really want them to introduce all of the integral pieces that exist in Spider-Man's universe

Daily Bugle
Osborn
Gwen Stacey
Mary Jane
Flash
Eddie Brock
Harry Osborn
Uncle Ben (Even if it's flashbacks and no origin)
Aunt May

I want Marvel/Sony to forget about the past movies and do Spider-Man justice, the way he is supposed to be on screen.... It was awkward in TASM 2 to have Harry just show up out of no where, these characters need to be established early so that the universe makes sense

Right on, awesome.

For the titles, I want Marvel to follow what they've been doing....

Simply....

Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt
Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage
Spider-Man: Spider-Man No More
Spider-Man: The Night Gwen Stacey Died

etc, etc....

I'm with you, I want Norman as a long term villain, maybe even funding other villains along the way.

Peter made a door lock, told an answer on cross species genetics, made Webb vibrations to track the lizard, wrote some equations on his board, created the shooters, created his own police scanner, and a few other things.

But seriously dude no need to act like a dick and a [foo foo] at the same time.

Also enough with the bing jokes. It's really ridiculous.

I want more consistency when it comes to the use of his Spider sense. I hate when it's used when it's needed for the story, it should be on all the time, no on off switch.

I also want some web pits, lol, I think that can really make this Spider-Man visually different from the others right away.

I also want the first 3 films to have Norman Osbourne, but no Green Goblin yet. Slowly build it up, use other villains first.

I love the idea of Mysterio, and Kraven, but my personal wish list is Chameleon, Scorpion, Doc Ock, and Electro.

Of course Venom, but I want to wait until after Peter is an adult instead of a teenager.

I want the films to kind of follow the Harry Potter example, mature in tone as the character grows up.

@SuperStuff

Nice, good article man.... I'm totally with you on Osborn, I want his character to be a mainstay in the films. Honestly, I want to see Gwen Stacy die again, and I want Marvel to explore that arc but this time I want it to be many films down the line, and I want their relationship to be established, and I want it to be Norman Osborn

@DrDoom

Mysterio needs to be in the reboot, without a doubt.

And, the Parker genius factor needs to be there....

The Parker luck factor also needs to be there....

I can't wait, because I know Marvel will do him justice

"Mysterio
Kingpin
Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane being in Peter's life at the same time
Peter using his intelligence on a regular basis
Focus on high school life
Shocker
Black Cat
and some goddamn Spider Slayers, dammit!"

How so smart....???

I think it would be important to make this movie smaller in scale, kinda like you said. There's no need for the same romance/save the city from three villains plot. Just look at the Spectacular Spider-man animated series. Fortunately I think this is what Marvel has in mind. Make it about Peter balancing his social life (but no f'ing romance) and fighting some smaller-time criminal. Maybe Shocker, Rhino (proper) or Sandman. And you're right, have Norman Osbourne in the background and have him become GG later. Venom should also be introduced later. I would really love to see the Lizard done well with Connor's family playing a big part, but that won't happen.
Maybe get some comic writers on the case.

@nuyhm7ai
If you had decided to fully interpret my comment, you would know that it was just a simple gag to throw out there, nothing more or less. I had not intentionally wanted to sound like a dick. To alert the audience of (maybe imho only) of how Andrew Garfield's character had not been given any real genuine intelligence, but was rather only hinted at and maybe even times hinted that he hadn't even done such things, is what I was trying to reason with. :P

@SuperStuff
I was too busy ranting that I forgot to appreciate the entirety of the article. And definitely, I agree that there should be more scenes that enhance the usage of spiders powers, such as first person web shooting scenes or slo-motion spider sense. Nice casting for J.K. Simmons JJJ btw.

I'm sure theres no need to be worrying. Marvel will get the right people for the job, no doubt about it.

I think Spider-Man should be cast as an adult, we have seen the coming of age story over the last 5 Spider-Man movies. He has been an adult for most of his comic book life (with the exception of Ultimate Spider-Man). He should be a seasoned hero, and ready to graduate college, working as an intern at Stark Industries or something.
