It's no secret that Jared Leto immerses himself in the characters he plays, hence why he essentially blinded himself for Blade Runner 2049 by wearing opaque contact lenses during production. However, during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-winning actor was quick to deny some of the more outlandish claims which were made about his performance as The Joker in Suicide Squad.
"Most of it was total bullsh*t," Leto claims when he asked about reports he went above and beyond with his actions while starring in the divisive DC Comics adaptation from director David Ayer. "Like that I was giving used condoms to people, which was not true. It doesn’t matter how loud you shout or hold up a sign with your pants off in Times Square — people will run the story that they want."
"On set, we were all laughing," he says in regards to the bizarre gifts he sent to the likes of Will Smith and Margot Robbie. "People were thrilled to [get] them. Whatever the Joker would give, was the idea. I didn’t really even put them together, basically. It was my team and my assistant. We were all having fun with it. It was really touching." Leto says the gifts included a "porno magazine — plus 60."
"Was I focused when I was doing the scenes? Of course," he concludes. "Look you work the way you work, I’ll work the way I work. You can kiss my ass if you don’t like." More comments from Leto can be found in the video below but it will be interesting seeing how his behaviour differs when he returns as the Clown Prince of Crime in both Suicide Squad 2 and the planned Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff.
