ROBOCOP Star Joel Kinnaman Frontrunner To Play 'Rick Flagg' In SUICIDE SQUAD

Tom Hardy looked set to play Rick Flagg in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and when he dropped out, Jake Gyllenhaal was eyed as a replacement. We've heard a few names since, but The Killing star Joel Kinnaman is said to be the frontrunner. Who else is being considered? Find out here...

It looks like Suicide Squad has finally found its Rick Flagg, with Joel Kinnaman said to be the frontrunner to take on the role in Fury director David Ayer's 2016 DC Comics adaptation. There were rumours that Tom Hardy departed the project due to his character not having a particularly large role, but the official explanation is that it came down to scheduling issues caused by shooting The Revenant and promotional duties for Mad Max: Fury Road. It very much sounds like this is all but a done deal, so expect to possibly hear something official about Kinnaman playing Flagg soon.  However, The Hollywood Reporter says that Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead are also being considered. The rest of the Suicide Squad cast includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne and likely Viola Davis and Jesse Eisenberg too. The movie will be released on August 5th next year. Who would you guys like to see take on the role?

I haven't seen him in much, but from what I've heard he's a terrific actor. If he bulks up then I'm all for it!

I chose not to see Robocop last year, so I do not know how Kinnaman has progressed. However, I have seen Safe House (one of my favorite films from 2012), and let me tell you–this Actor, while only in the film for about 10 minutes, proves that he is special, within one of the most authentic fight scenes I have ever seen within a film:

@ClarkStark

A downgrade because of he's less popular. If you can do the job thats what matters.

He's a good choice for Rick Flagg. Not too big of a name but a solid actor.

@clarkstark

Why would this be rated R?

He was great in the Killing so I'd be fine with this

@ClarkStark

If they don't want it to flop (like every other R rated CBM so far) it'll be PG-13.

I could see Joe Bernthal too...just as long as he stays away from that stupid head-rubbing tic he had in Walking Dead haha

He done a solid job in Robocop, and I doubt it will be a substantial role. Im on board with this casting.

Also, shame on Josh Wilding for using that photo, this image, perhaps represents the guy a bit better:

He definitely has that Special Forces type of look to him, so that's great, too.

Aww.

Had he been announced straightaway, I would have been fine with it. Now we may always look back and say... "we could've had Tom Hardy".

This movie is still gonna rock though. Still can't believe we're getting it in the first place! :D

This guy could be Hal Jordan, Rick Flagg is the Member with the lowest importance of the suicide squad, he could have a bigger role, Hal Jordan for example.

@Minty

Sucks how nowadays everything leaks and gets out and we know everything. When we only could've heard two possibilities. But at the same time I like it so it creates discussion.

Well I'm okay with him being Flagg, maybe there is better, but there is worst.
