SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Reveals Best Look Yet At The Joker's Scrapped Role In The Final Act

Like it or not, the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement is going nowhere and filmmaker David Ayer recently fanned those flames by sharing a new look at Jared Leto's Joker from Suicide Squad's original final act...

Suicide Squad was released in 2016 to negative reviews, but even seven years on, the movie remains at the forefront of many minds. The #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement still has a vocal following on social media, and director David Ayer continues teasing his original plans for Task Force X's big screen debut before Warner Bros. stepped in and altered his vision.

Among the changes made by the studio was how The Joker's story ended.

In the version we all watched in theaters, the Clown Prince of Crime appeared to die after saving Harley Quinn's life by pushing her from that helicopter shortly before it crashed.

However, he returned in the movie's closing moments to reunite with Harley and break her out of Belle Reve. It was a weird scene considering the fact their relationship was obviously a toxic one, but we know at least some of what Ayer had planned.

In his cut of Suicide Squad, Harley and Deadshot were going to develop romantic feelings for each other. The Joker, badly burned from that crash (which saw him throw Harley out of the chopper not to save her, but to punish her for caring about her teammates), returned and briefly allied himself with Enchantress before dropping a grenade and making his escape.

That would have come after Harley wiped her hands with him once and for all, but it appears this was all too dark for Warner Bros. in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's negative reviews.

Now, the filmmaker has shared a new look at Leto's Joker from that original ending which you can check out below.

While we have no doubt that the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad was a very different beast, it still feels like it's time to move on. After all, in the wake of The Suicide Squad's release and James Gunn now overseeing a reboot of the DCEU as DC Studios' co-CEO, it feels like the movie's time has been and gone.

Do you think the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad will ever see the light of day?

Not sure if it's the prosthetic teeth, or Leto's interpretation, But his Joker always looks like he's miming a laugh or sounded like he was fake laughing.

Compared to Heath's snickers and even Phoenix's uncontrollable jeers and squeals, Leto had not just the failed aesthetical motif with the forehead tat, and metal veneers; but his laugh in appearance and sound, plainly sucked.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - His usual laugh is just too slow & awkward so it sounds fake. It works best in the helicopter scene when he's shooting his gold AK and he laughs at a normal speed.

He still has the Damaged tattoo, so no version of this movie would ever be considered good.

I did like it more than BvS, but there isn't many movies I hated more than BvS.

One thing that would’ve helped the movie was instead of Amanda being the rescue target , have them be responsible for extracting the joker, and save it as a surprise for the team and the audience

Like imagine they get to an apartment where the target is being held for safety during enchantresses attack (also shouldn’t have been the villain just the backdrop for the suicide squad mission, maybe while the JL is fighting her) they walk in to see joker in the kitchen in some dumb ass housewife outfit or something talking about welcome home to Harley and the rest is her dealing with it

Ties him into the main story very easily instead of some weird b plot that got cut to nothing

It's real bizarre how obsessed Ayer is with the absolutely worst element of his movie. Character is badly designed, badly scripted, barely another character's B plot and even less relevant to the A plot.

Is someone gaslighting him into believing people actually want more Joker?

@Reeds2Much - I never read the leaked original script, did he have a more important role? Like maybe that’s what he’s clinging to

@Reeds2Much - He gaslit himself into thinking there's alternate takes and longer versions of the Joker scenes with a good Joker in them, and it's not just a shitshow from conception stage all the way to filming.

I’m sure Ayer’s cut was a much better movie than the theatrical, and compared to the Snyder Cut, seems to change more story beats and character arcs. That said, there’s really no need to ever see it.

"The Joker, badly burned from that crash (which saw him throw Harley out of the chopper not to save her, but to punish her for caring about her teammates" I get Joker is a very irrational actor, but after spending the first half of the movie watching him spend so much time, effort and money on getting Harley out then deciding to drop her on a whim seems like they wasted our time with the Joker scenes that came before, trying to keep Harley in his grip by "saving" her seems like a better use of his position and what came before, with him being in a stronger position at the end to try to entice her back.

I hope we get purple suit Joker back in The Batman series. It's been too long in live action since Ledger wore it.
