When Zack Snyder's Justice League was announced off the back of a very vocal and unrelenting fan campaign, some believed showing their support for a director's cut of 2016's highly divisive Suicide Squad would yield similar results. Unfortunately, the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement did not have the desired effect, and Warner Bros. brass made it very clear that they have no intention of allowing David Ayer to see his original vision for the movie to fruition.
Of course, these things can change very quickly, and if enough of the right people throw their support behind the "Ayer Cut," the studio might just rethink its decision.
One very powerful individual who would love to see Ayer get the opportunity to release his version of the film is Will Smith, who played Floyd Lawton, aka Deadshot. The actor, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in King Richard, was asked for his thoughts on the fan-campaign, and gave a very enthusiastic response.
All that being said, even with Smith's backing, a director's cut of Suicide Squad is still a massive long shot. It might be a different story if James Gunn's The Suicide Squad had performed better at the box office, but as things stand, it's difficult to imagine WB pouring money into this project.
What do you guys think? Would you like to see the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad?
