THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Supports Release Of SUICIDE SQUAD "Ayer Cut"

James Gunn is rebooting the Suicide Squad franchise with The Suicide Squad, but the filmmaker has unexpectedly shared his support for the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement taking social media by storm...

Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen David Ayer reveal a lot about his original Suicide Squad plans. The news that Zack Snyder's Justice League is coming to HBO Max has only served to inspire the filmmaker to share even more details, including scrapped scenes, Warner Bros.' involvement in giving his movie the "Edward Scissorhands" treatment, and plenty of other titbits.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is currently doing post-production work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros., a release it's believed will serve as both a sequel and reboot.

However, when one fan asked Gunn if he would oppose the release of the "Ayer Cut" of 2016's Suicide Squad (which would inevitably distract from his take, and possibly hurt it if that original cut is no good), the writer and director made it clear that it's something he would have no problem with.

As you can see, Ayer responded by thanking his fellow filmmaker, and his "however this crazy ride unfolds" comment definitely indicates that he's hopeful we could see "David Ayer's Suicide Squad."

Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but you can check out their exchange below:

Wasn't james who told the movie was garbage?

@Homen100 - I think it's garbage too but I'm not against the release of a director's cut either

@Homen100 - this isn’t support. He’s saying “I don’t give a [frick] what they do!”

Even if the cut does come out, there are so many issues with the story and the characterizations that are impossible to fix, many of which Ayer admitted himself.

@WakandanQueen - I actually liked the characterizations in the film, but a few of the plot points and the editing and Enchantress were way off the mark.

@JonAwesome - Maybe it was due to the acting that was far superior to anything in BVS and kept me through it despite my many problems with it as a flick and as a casual Suicide Squad fan.

@demery - I think there is a lot of good in Suicide Squad and would have been better if they just went up against the Joker instead of Enchantress. Plus dial down the LA gang bullshit you did to the Joker. I really liked what they did with most of the characters. Amanda Waller was 100% on point! Also Harley was great, way better than Birds of Prey.

Well it's very clear why the Snyder cut is being released now. HBO Max desperately, desperately needs original content. 5 original shows at launch, only one of which could be considered to be for adults. Most of the movies are from HBO. A lot of big WB films missing completely. So yeah I'd say Ayer's cut will be released for the pure reason that they need something, anything that can be considered a USP. Right now they got nothin'.

@BeyondtheFuture - what are the huge WB films missing completely...I browsed the 600 films but would love to know.

@BeyondtheFuture - oh the streaming service is already up and running? duh doy, I don't know how in the hell I missed that.
I'd kinda been thinking the whole 'special rare' thing of the Justice League happening was it was going to be the marquee thing to debut the service.
BeyondtheFuture
BeyondtheFuture - 5/27/2020, 4:11 PM
@IronGenesis - Well let's start with the fact there's no Superman films at all. Nolan's films are also missing in action.

He doesn't support it. He's OK with it being released. That's two different things.

@Moriakum - maybe his take distances itself so much from the last movie that it doesn't really matter.

I can't imagine it's fun working for a company that waffles like this on creative control and uses your credibility as a filmmaker as a marketing ploy to dupe people into buying DVDs and subscribing to streaming services.

It seems like Ayer was given complete creative freedom, then Batman vs. Superman fizzled and his movie tested poorly, so they all-but gave the reins to a trailer company, all the while he had to put on a happy face (afraid to look completely unprofessional). Then, they dangle an extended cut home release that is little more than a few deleted scenes. And now years later, he's actively trying to stoke social media into enticing WB into another cash-grab.

This... this just looks unhealthy to me. Very little of this is propelled by respect between the studio, the creatives, or the fans, just whether one of those parties can use another to coerce the third for their own means.

Off-topic, but I have a hot take from my quest to comprehensively survey 90's television: Baywatch and Star Trek: The Next Generation are basically the same show.

A prosaic show centered on fairly dull characters working for a universally benevolent organization notable for their single-block-color uniforms. The stories are centered on a disaster-of-the-week episodic format to highlight pro-social moral lessons, peppered with mundane low-stakes social drama.

It's like exactly the same show, except instead of transdimensional worms stuck in the transport buffer, it's jellyfish in the tide pool.

@Spock0Clock - You're forgetting two things.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/27/2020, 4:56 AM
@Reeds2Much - I'm forgetting no such things. There's obviously a desire to titillate happening with Baywatch (and once they had their synergy with Playboy, it did get pretty gross), but Star Trek wasn't above basic fanservice of their own.

I've pretty much always assumed Baywatch was just boobs bouncing for 40 minutes (that's certainly what I remember from watching bits and pieces of it as a teenager), but actually watching the show is kind of eye-opening. It's not good in the same way that most 90's TV wasn't actually very good, but I've watched a handful of episodes now and they're totally serviceable in terms of plot and characterization. It's kind of a shame that the common perception doesn't do it justice. It's largely a show about doing the right thing, being the best version of yourself, and helping people. (And now that I'm a bit older and more comfortable with this stuff, I'm realizing there's actually a lot of material for a female gaze happening here, too. It's a very harmless kind of trashy, I think.)

Also... (and this is something I'm learning about myself now)... Newman is kind of doing it for me.

Gunn has that in common with Snyder and now possibly Ayer:

Having a wrong put right through relentless campaigning by fans/colleagues through various social media channels.

I just watched a BTS of this movie and the cast genuinely seemed to really enjoy the atmosphere he created on the set...they also became great friends with each other. However you feel about how it turned out, this looked like a really fun film to make.

I would definitely like to see the Ayer cut. I'm a huge fan of a couple of his movies and you can tell the difference in tone from the first trailer compared to the rest.
