SUICIDE SQUAD 2: Here's Why We Can Probably Forget About Jared Leto Returning As The Joker

We recently learned that James Gunn will take the helm of the Suicide Squad sequel but past comments made by the filmmaker have indicated that he probably won't be bringing Jared Leto back as The Joker...

Earlier this week, we learned that Warner Bros. has snapped up Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 and while we've since heard that he's planning a totally new take on the franchise, what isn't clear is whether or not the original cast will return or if the filmmaker will start from scratch. Either way, we can probably forget about seeing Jared Leto's Joker again.

In 2015, Gunn went on what he described as an "Ambien-fuelled Periscope session" in which he reportedly made a number of derogatory comments about the actor, including insinuating that the Oscar-winner sleeps with underage girls. He's also alluded to that on social media and in a deleted 2012 Tweet, Gunn said: "Driving home from Vegas trading stories about what a dick Jared Leto is."

Needless to say, it's hard to imagine Leto wanting to work with Gunn and vice versa. The actor's future as the Clown Prince of Crime has been in doubt for a while now; he's not expected to appear in Birds of Prey and while it was previously reported that he'll appear in Suicide Squad 2 and a standalone adventure, that seems highly unlikely (the Harley Quinn vs. The Joker movie has also seemingly stalled).

Are you disappointed that Leto's tenure as the Clown Prince of Crime is seemingly at an end now?

@JohnnyTBP -

A perfect example of how WB mismanaged their own universe by letting a director just randomly create a Joker they were going to have to live with for years. Grand Theft Auto-Joker is now being phased out.

I'm amazed at how casually WB approached the creation of such an iconic character.

@Humperdink - Yeah, there are a lot of examples of bad, short-sighted casting decisions in the DCEU, that other directors have had to live with. Patty Jenkins was very up-front about Gal Gadot not being her first choice (she ended up doing a great job, but I'm sure that took a lot of work) and judging from the trailers, Jason Momoa does not have the chops for what James Wan is going for. Snyder always casts based on look, and it's kind of screwed the whole universe.

I do think Leto could have been good with a decent script, but his Joker was such a misfire, that they're better off starting from scratch. And it sounds like he sucks to work with, so why bother?

@BestAtWhatIDo - "Snyder always casts based on look, and it's kind of screwed the whole universe." For some yes, but Aquaman & Jason Momoa definitely don't share a resemblance, and the Flash & Ezra Miller are far from twins. Also Amy Adams v. Lois Lane.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Only problem with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is that everyone in Themyscara now has to have an accent or has to fake an accent to match hers because her English is terrible LOL. Mammoa was a good choice because Aquaman always had this pretty boy/loser image so they wanted to cast the opposite.

@Aquamoa18 - I don't mean "comic accurate" look, per se. I mean he has an aesthetic in mind, and he casts based on that, regardless of acting ability. He wanted surfer badass for Aquaman, so he went with a guy who looks like a surfer badass, even though he's kind of a shitty actress. He wanted exotic beauty for Wonder Woman, so he went with an inexperienced model, who has improved a lot, but who was pretty wooden in BvS.

@Aquamoa18 - Ezra Miller is an odd choice, they casted a flamboyant gay guy for Barry Allen which doesn't match at all. Amy Adams is an unbelievable and terrible journalist, nor does she possess the swagger or attitude that Margot Kidder had. Mommoa is someone you gotta get used to, not a fan of his surfer boy personality. But Wan/Whedon must have been a fan of Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeve's Point Break.

@BestAtWhatIDo - There are two examples of bad/short-sighted casting in the DC Films Cinematic Universe, that's not a lot. The two are Cara Delvigne as Enchantress, or really anyone if I'm being brutally honest, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Ezra Miller MAY have been better as Wally West, but either way, he's entertaining in the role. Jason Momoa bears a striking resemblance to the Aquaman from the 90's Gal Gadot is perfect as Wonder Woman, and Amy Adams can definitely be more like Lois Lane, but she works incredibly well as Superman's beacon of hope.

Jared Leto is a hard nut to crack. His performance feels off until you realize that he acted so goofy before making a gangster shoot himself in the head or slapping Harley in the face, etc. The performance takes on a whole new meaning when it's reframed in such a way. He could probably kill it as The Joker if he isn't micromanaged afterward.

@SisterSunday52 - can't believe I'm saying this but glad to see you post something, got so quiet on all DC related articles I thought you died

Also can't believe I'm saying this, but I really don't have a huge problem with the castings. Leto's a solid actor, just wish he hadn't been used as a Hot Topic ad

@ftf530 - Yeah. #ReleasetheSnyderCut is in disarray on Twitter. With the harrassment of Diane Nelson, the mixed responses on the "Aquaman" trailer, and the hiring of James Gunn, one half of the movement is convinced that the DC Films Cinematic Universe is abandoning its rich, mature storytelling for simple pre-2017 Marvel popcorn fare, and the other half (the half I'm on) is trying to say there's no difference between the "Aquaman" trailer and previous trailers for DC Films, (except the fact that "Aquaman" looks like a cross between "Lord of the Rings" and "Indiana Jones") and the universe was always going to be taking a light-hearted and optimistic tone after the events of "Batman v Superman".

Considering the fact that the film was really about finding hope in absolute despair, it kind of had to. But one half of #ReleasetheSnyderCut believes that because it has a lighter color palette (something Snyder's "Justice League" also had) and because it had 3 jokes in a five minute trailer, that it's a Marvel clone. It's madness. XD

@ftf530 - To catch you up on my thoughts, I LOVE the "Aquaman" trailer. I was afraid it was going to have something that would make people think it was a rip-off of a Marvel movie, like how people completely misperceived "Wonder Woman" to be a rip-off of "Captain America: The First Avenger", but it looks like no other Comic Book Movie I have ever seen. I've always had it on my most anticipated list for this year, but it's shot to the top.

Now I’m reminded of one of the worst performances in a comic movie.

He never should have been in the movie to begin with. There were much better Squad lineups to use than that one. And even once they decided to go with that team, the writers should have watched the animated movie to see it done right. Embarrassing that y'all got showed up by a cartoon.
