THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Passed On The Chance To Helm "Some Sort Of SUPERMAN Movie"

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is hard at work shooting The Suicide Squad, but it sounds like he was offered any DC property he wanted by Warner Bros...including a new Superman movie!

There's a lot of excitement surrounding The Suicide Squad and with James Gunn at the helm, it's not hard to see why. However, the DC Extended Universe could have gone in a very different direction had the filmmaker considered taking on some of the other projects he was offered by Warner Bros.

During a recent Q&A on social media, Gunn talked more about being offered his pick of pretty much any DC property he wanted, and it sounds like Superman was among those on the table.

"As has been reported many times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I've seen reported)," Gunn told a fan. "I chose The Suicide Squad because it's one of my favorite properties in the world. It's the story I wanted to tell more than any other."

His mention of that Superman movie not being Man of Steel 2 is very interesting, and could be a sign that the studio is indeed looking to move on from Henry Cavill's time as the iconic hero.

Gunn's take on Superman certainly would have been interesting, but The Suicide Squad has a lot of potential and the filmmaker has assembled an incredible cast. Whether he'll return to the DCEU remains to be seen, of course, but next up for the director is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Do you wish Gunn had committed to a Superman movie instead of The Suicide Squad?

@dragon316 - lol. That is where it all went wrong and Superman on film hasn't recovered since.

@MyCoolYoung - I think several directors have passed on Superman recently. No 1 wants to make a superman they cannot reinvent or have to insert into the current DCEU. I think WB is going to make Patton Oswalts version:

"make it super-gritty, kinda early 70s Scorsese-style, he’s a failed reporter or something and lois lane is just a figment of his imagination and call it SUPER"

Where it is closer to Todd Phillips Joker

@MyCoolYoung - Patton Oswaltz's tweet is real. It was a sarcastic response to the article & WB's failure in film-making to reinvent superman. It's not a real DC project if that's what your asking.

Patton Oswalt, Neil Gaiman, and several creators were openly shitting on how WB has failed Superman and yet Marvel has managed to keep Captain America more relevant even though Cap's creation and ideal are more outdated than Superman.

@knocturnalzen10 - Me personally, it may sound crazy, but why not offer The Russos a ton of money to do it? They got a boy scout like Cap so right and I know they aren't fans of DC and the ridiculously overpowered as they say, but what is wrong with an offer?

Beyond that, I think someone like Bad Bird could do something cool. Idk if he would do it. Random, but I watched The I Kill Giants movie a little while back and really enjoyed it. I liked the imagination in it and thought they guy who helmed that would be a cool fit for a cbm.

@BlackBeltJones - not sure about the Russo's but i think Bird would have a good eye for Clark , visually i just want Denis Villeneuve... after TROS i don't want JJ near Superman :(

WB is actually a little off for offering it to him. He is not a good fit for Superman.

They're just tossing The Last Son at anybody...

This on top of the editor saying it was rushed and unprecedented editing choices during shooting just a few days ago.
