THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Margot Robbie Rumored To Return As Harley Quinn In The DCU

Fans have been wondering about the status of Margot Robbie's take on Harley Quinn heading in to James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU, and a new rumor is claiming that she will return as the character...

We know that the new DCU currently being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as a relaunch of Warner Bros.' previous DC Comics-based universe, but will it be a full reboot, or will some characters be sticking around?

Conflicting reports have led to a lot of confusion, especially when we know that Gunn will soon begin working on a second season of Peacemaker and a spin-off focusing on Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. In addition, Gal Gadot recently claimed that she was set to return as Wonder Woman for a third movie set in the DCU (although this was later refuted by the trades).

Gunn hasn't addressed Gadot's comments personally, but he did recently suggest that the events of The Suicide Squad would not be canon in the DCU. However, reliable scooper @MyTimeToShine is now claiming that Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn at some point.

If this is accurate, it would seem to confirm that Gunn will indeed be picking and choosing which actors remain on board as their respective characters.

Though previous movies featuring Robbie's take on Quinn haven't exactly set the box office on fire, the massive success of Barbie means she's going to be more in-demand than ever, so bringing her back as the unhinged anti-hero would be a smart move.

Guns DC is dead on arrival 😑

@AmazingFILMporg - I know some are going to be mad about what I am going to say: Gunn sometimes feels like too much of a comic fan. Now, I am one too, but there is a lot of stuff our crowd takes for granted that the general audience doesn't.

The Suicide Squad is a great example. As a comic book fan, I got it immediately: it's a new creative team on a run. When Grant Morrison took over X-Men, it became New X-Men and had a totally new look and aesthetic, but was still technically following X-Men vol. 2 in continuity.

But to the general public, it was like, "Is this a sequel? Reboot? It has the same cast but looks and feels completely different in the trailers. The name is basically the same too. What is it?"

The same is happening here. Gunn is doing the typical DC reboot where some stuff happened, some stuff didn't, and you can work out which is which after you switch over. And, as a long time DC comic fan, I often found this a huge mess, especially during the New 52 and Rebirth with "everything is completely different except all of Batman still happened but happened in a five year period" and then when there were two Supermen who got combined into one history and I couldn't figure out if he had or hadn't dated Wonder Woman anymore aggghhh.

Just cut the limb, James. If this is a fresh start, this is a fresh start. Don't complicate this in a way that seems obvious to savvy comic book fans but will turn off casuals.

@DalekCraigWasson - your fourth paragraph is one of the reasons why DC/marvel are in such a shit state. No wonder manga consistently does better sales wise

@Taonrey - It's embarrassing too because manga has broken a lot of conventional wisdom about western comics. Like Marvel/DC, manga can go on for dozens and dozens and dozens of volumes, the latest serialized chapter being chapter 1186 or something, but the stories are easy to jump on and you know what Volume 1 is that you can start as a new fan. There's only one Volume 1.

Comic book companies have erroneously believed that taking everything to a screeching halt and restarting at Issue 1 after 17 issues "brings in new readers" when it also turns off long existing ones. I know this is a combination of many many things, but it drives me crazy when the 200th Amazing Spider-Man #1 doesn't do as well as a random high hundred number issue from a couple of decades ago. I'm not even talking continuity here, just the used cars salesman tactic of putting a new number on an old product.

"Reboot" aka. I'll pick and choose what I liked about the old one and migrate that over.

So Gunn keeping his friends and business partners employed, despite the dire need for a full DC reboot...

@LongMayHeReign -

"keeping his friends and business partners employed"

Yep, Margot Robbie is being hired because she is Gunn's friend, not because she is an Oscar-nominated star and producer who just gave WB a billion-dollar box office phenomenon.

@Ginley - She's also the star of a lot of flops. A lot lot. Barbie (it's the name Barbie that's selling tickets, not Robbie's) is the exception, not the rule. Even the 2 DCEU movies where she was the main star flopped.

@Ginley - Don't get me wrong, I think Robbie is talented as [frick], but her BO history is depressing.

Yeah, the DCU is just the DCEU with a paint job. What a mess.

Because her STAR is in the ascendent.

She's still close to the model - its just the writing of the character that utterly stinks.

"BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)" - should have been the end of that.

The only reason I was okay with Henry and co being recast is because I get to have the audience feel like this is a new entity, it has to start fresh. But at this point, nobody is going to convince me that they couldn't do the same story with an older Superman.

Super12 - 8/15/2023, 6:51 AM
@Highflyer - Exactly. It just puts all the attention on the elephant in the room - the lack of Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. If those are essentially the only major differences in this universe then its obvious what WB thought the problem was....and a whollllle lotta fans would vehemently disagree.

Robbie is box office poison. Barbie is an exception, not the rule. Also, memes don't last forever.
