Fans of the
Suicide Squad wept with joy when they learned that a second chance was given to the team after the first film was critically panned. Despite its decent box office turnout, the reception of the film was very poor and was one of the reasons - along with
Batman Vs. Superman - that the DCEU struggled to find its footing for so long. However, after the short Marvel/Disney snafu with
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 and
2 director James Gunn becoming available - Warner Bros. was quick to snatch him and put him in charge of rebooting Task Force X in the upcoming
The Suicide Squad.
Gunn has been working on the new film which is slated for an August 2021 release date and features a returning cast of Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis mixed with new cast members John Cena, Pete Davidson, David Dastmalchian, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, Idris Elba, Storm Reid, Peter Capaldi, Nathan Fillion, and Taika Waititi. It was repored this week by Ayer himself, the director of the first film, that his
Suicide Squad movie is not connected to the wider universe setting up Gunn's version to reboot and reimagine the characters - even the likes of Rick Flagg, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, and Amanda Waller.
This will likely allow for actual crossovers between these characters and the ones in the wider DCEU - especially considering that Harley Quinn is a main character in
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn come February - and of course fueling speculation that the version of her we see in that film won't be the one from Ayer's
Suicide Squad and instead the one from Gunn's upcoming
The Suicide Squad which might be confusing but it's likely that Warner Bros. is expecting James Gunn's influence to outweigh what little memory fans retain of the original film.
Before the movie is forgotten altogether, we look back today to realize that there was originally a connection to
Justice League in the film that was ultimately cut out and re-written. David Ayer has now confirmed that Enchantress was supposed to be under control of a motherbox but at the last minute the connections to Apokalypse, the boom tube, and ultimate
Justice League as a whole were entirely written out. See Ayer's tweet for yourself below.
What do you think? Would this have made for a better movie or is it best that we are moving on to a different version and leaving that one in the past? Let us know your thoughts in the comments and if you'd like, see the trailer for
