Zack Snyder And David Ayer Tease Jared Leto's Take On 'The Joker' In SUICIDE SQUAD

There's been a lot of talk about Jared Leto's take on The Joker in Suicide Squad, but now the director of that movie - David Ayer - and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice helmer Zack Snyder have spilled the beans on what we should expect from his Clown Prince of Crime...

We'll hopefully get a new look at The Joker during the Suicide Squad trailer this evening, but director David Ayer has now offered up an interesting idea of what we should expect from Jared Leto's interpretation in a new interview with USA Today. "It’s a scary character to tackle," he said of the Clown Prince of Crime. "This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history — there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best known villain in fiction so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase." After commenting on Leto's decision to stay in character even when the cameras weren't rolling, Ayer went on to explain what kind of impact seeing his Joker had on him. "The hairs stand up on the back of your neck. If you're a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he’s the best nemesis ever. Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me."

Zack Snyder reportedly never got to visit the Toronto set of Suicide Squad to see The Joker in action, but as a producer he says, "I was very much looped in on the crazy stuff happening with that. The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with (in) every little moment and every little breath. You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing."

It sounds pretty intense then, though with rumours pointing to The Joker showing up in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in a flashback, chances are that Snyder is more familiar with the villain than he's letting on. We'll just have to wait and see!

I'm really curious to see more of him. My personal feelings towards this incarnation of the character could still go either way, but regardless of how much I like it in the end I'm sure it'll be a memorable performance!

I've said it before but the look of Leto's Joker doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I actually really like the look. Tattoos and all.

From what I have seen, Leto's Joker will blend seamlessly into the kind of worlds that Ayer loves to play in. I also find it very exciting that they are letting a character (and actor) so completely off of the rails so early in the franchise. This could make for a VERY exciting dynamic that future films/directors will be forced to deal with.

Also, I really hope I'm not wrong.

Here's the thing: at the end of the day, we're going to love Leto's Joker.

But that will not make up for the character design choices.
