The DCU's SUPERGIRL Movie Eyes Craig Gillespie To Direct; Here's When It Will Start Filming

The DCU is moving fairly quickly on Milly Alcock's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led studio is currently negotiating with Craig Gillespie to direct.

Following Superman (formerly known as Superman: Legacy), the next DCU film that could hit theaters is Milly Alcock's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Deadline just broke the news that Craig Gillespie (Cruella,  I, Tonya) is in talks to direct the superhero film which will be based on the 2022 comic run of the same name from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely.

Gillespie would be directing from a script penned by  Ana Nogueira. In addition to Woman of Tomorrow, Nogueira is also writing a Teen Titans movie for the DCU.

It seems the DCU might be anchored around DC Comics' line of Superman books as Woman of Tomorrow is reportedly set to start filming in Q4 2024 (Oct.-Dec.).

This leads one to wonder what other Superman allies might be set to make a big-screen appearance- Mon El? Connor Kent? Steel? Superboy Prime? If Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow stays true to the original comic then we'll definitely see Krypto.

The official synopsis for King and Evely's run reads:

Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame.

Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.

This volume collects Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1-8

Previously, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn stated that in Supergirl, "we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton."

"She then watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing."

Back in February, WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow casting was currently underway so expect news to soon emerge on the film's supporting cast.

Prior to that, Gunn also stated that two other movies besides Superman would soon be entering production. We now know that Woman of Tomorrow is one of them but what about the second?

As a soft reboot of the DCEU, the DCU features an ambitious film slate that includes:

On the television side, highly-anticipated projects include:

Alcock will first be seen in Superman, which hits theaters on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy. Filming is currently underway, in several locations around the globe.

I, Tonya was enjoyable and Cruella was better than it had any business being. He seems like a good pick.

I'm concerned about the writer. I want to know Gunn's hiring process. He hired the guy who made a massive flop with the flash to make his Batman film and he hired someone that has zero experience as a writer to write a huge film like Supergirl.

Is he nuts?!

She has no experience! Like at all! Who is her mother or father? Is this a nepo situation?🤡

@AmazingFILMporg - Gunn said the Flash was "one of the best superhero movies ever made". He must genuinely believe it.

@harryba11zack - Wasn’t saying it was great, but it was entertaining enough, and far better than all the shot for shot live action remakes lately.

Her origin for not liking Dalmatians was pretty lame though.

I'll be impressed if they don't feel obligated to hire a female director. That caveat never made sense to me.

@Lisa89 - Seriously. What possible advantage could a woman have when it comes to telling women's stories?
Lisa89
Lisa89 - 4/3/2024, 4:26 PM
@Clintthahamster - They should hire the director that has the greatest personal connection to the material. Is this more likely to be a woman? Yes. But the idea that they should only consider female directors is ridiculous. I'd like to think we're past that phase.

@Lisa89 - "But the idea that they should only consider female directors is ridiculous. I'd like to think we're past that phase."

Well, you're commenting on an article about a male director being considered for a job directing a woman-lead, woman-written movie, so . . . I guess I don't understand the concern.

@Clintthahamster - It's merely a rumor until the deal is inked. There's plenty of time for Gunn to feel the online pressure that he seems so susceptible to.

@Lisa89 - Sorry, I guess? I hope you don't have to wrestle with the idea that someone might think a woman is the best person for a job.

How long before we get...

"When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERGIRL."

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - They should do it the other way around; "It was clear the title was WOMAN OF TOMORROW."

Because it would be clear that she deserves to be called a woman rather than a girl.

I, Tonya was pretty damn good but Cruella was kind of rough though. Still, Tonya should be enough of a case to prove this guy can do well with Supergirl.

Not a bad choice tbf, but tbh I don't know if having a Superman movie being followed up by another movie centering around a Kryptonian is the best idea (just seems like it would come off as a lack of variety imo).

After both the DCEU and this phase of the MCU being all over the place….I would love some clear shared universe continuity.

Honestly , an odd and unexpected choice…

The only films of him I have seen are Fright Night & Cruella which were both enjoyable but didn’t necessarily give me an indication he would be a good fit for Supergirl (atleast the version this is based on).

I was hoping for someone more like Kate Herron but oh well , wish him luck if it happens!!.

I like this choice for director, although I'm still not sold on the writer. Guess the script must be good, as The Flash wasn't convincing at all

She is a playwright turned screenwriter who is writing this and the Teen Titans
