In news that no one expected, trade reporter turned online scooper Jeff Sneider is reporting that an animated movie centering on the Jurassic League is in development at DC Studios.
James Gunn is said to be producing the film while Brian Lynch (Minions, Puss In Boots) is writing the script.
The idea for the Jurassic League was developed relatively recently by writer Daniel Warren Johnson and illustrator Juan Gedeon. A six-issue miniseries that ran monthly from May through October in 2022 marked the team's debut.
The official synopsis for the hardcover that collects all six issues reads, "You know the story: an infant escapes a far-off planet before it explodes and is deposited on Earth to be raised by human parents. A goddess from a lost city defends truth. A Tyrannosaurus rex dons the visage of a bat to strike fear into evildoers’ hearts. This heroic trinity, alongside a league of other super-powered dinosaurs, join forces to save a prehistoric Earth from the sinister machinations of Darkseid.
Wait…what? Okay, maybe you don’t know the story. So join us and bear witness to a brand-new—yet older than time—adventure and experience the Justice League as you have never seen them before!"
It was recently announced that the team would be returning as a back-up story in the pages of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, starting with the 13th issue, which hits comic book stores on May 28.
As implied by the group's name, the comic centers on a group of prehistoric superheroes that serve as the Justice League's parallel counterparts in an alternate reality, designated Earth-27.
The members of the team are Wonderdon, a Triceratops warrior princess from Amazonia who resembles Wonder Woman, Batsaur, an Allosaurus that is a pastiche of Batman and battles crime at night, and the Superman-like Brachiosaurus- Supersaur, the last dinosaur of his kind. Aquanyx (Aquaman), Flashraptor (Flash), and Green Torch (Green Lantern) also eventually join the dinosaur-themed Trinity.
While we await confirmation from James Gunn or Warner Bros. fans are speculating on whether this animated feature will be canon to the DCU or if it will be an Elseworlds spinoff. Fans are also wondering if this film will be a theatrical release or a project that's developed for Max.
While Gunn previously stated that he wants the DCU to be comprised of film, television, video games and animation projects (see Creature Commandos) it's hard to see how an anthropomorphic take on the Justice League factors into the current Gods and Monsters lineup.
