HERE ARE 7 THINGS MAN OF STEEL 2 NEEDS TO GET RIGHT IN ORDER TO BE BETTER THAN THE FIRST...

1. The Clark Kent Story – First and foremost now that we’ve had the Superman story we’ve always wanted, give us a Clark Kent story that is hopefully better if not on par with Man of Steel. A lot of critics complained that this movie was not human enough or it didn’t deliver on the emotional as much as on the physical. I agree to a certain degree. There were many touching moments for me however the supporting cast was mostly there to keep the plot moving forward or to remind us of 911. Although the movie is over two hours long, half of that are action scenes. I would have loved to see more of Kevin Costner in the role of Pa Kent. I would have loved for Clark’s relationships with the other characters to feel more believable and genuine. I loved MOS despite all this and hope that the sequel will improve on some points I and others have pointed out. I hope that it will show us a farm boy attempting to adapt to a new more chaotic environment and job.

2. His Secret Identity Problem – This one is extremely important. Goyer has admitted how this will be a challenge for him moving forward and that in my opinion is an understatement. MOS is not a perfect movie and I’m sure many will agree that this is a reason why. Too many people know Superman’s identity. Most of his middle school classmates know it and Lois knows it. The government should already know that the Kents are people of interest. They are the only family on earth that was personally visited by General Zod and his fellow Kryptonians. Snyder needs to show us a believable explanation for why no one has been able or will be able to recognize him. Whether it’s using Kryptonian technology or simply glasses lol this will have to be properly explored in the MOS sequel.

3. His Romantic Relationships – One thing that Smallville did really well that I long to see on film is to show us what dating Clark Kent would really be like. Personally I do not want Clark and Lois’ relationship to go anywhere past that kiss and here’s why! Goyer and Snyder should play up the sexual tension between the two and begin to lay down the foundation for a strong friendship that most successful marriages are built on. I would much prefer see Clark close and intimate with Lana Lang. The Dark Knight Rises is a perfect example of what I would prefer to see Clark deal with in this sequel. In TDKR Bruce Wayne meets in many way his soul mate Selina Kyle but he ends up opening up to Talia. The later [reference to Talia] ends up betraying him and being a worst match for him than he could have ever imagined! I want to see Clark assume it better to open up to someone who has known him longer only to realize that he might not belong with a fellow small town girl.

4. His Fortress of Solitude – For most of the movie I assumed the Genesis ship (aka the ship that Clark finds in Canada) would be Superman’s fortress of solitude. The idea of his fortress actually being a ancient Kryptonian ship was awesome and very appropriate! Had that been the case he would have had technology at his disposal that is beyond human understanding or capabilities. Considering his father designed it, if he salvaged the ships remains he should be able to repair it and use it once more. So why is it important that he has alien tech in his fortress? How else then will he figure out what kryptonite is? Yes humans could figure it out but Superman has never relied on mankind for information in regards to alien stuff. That’s part of what makes him Superman. It’s that he’s not just a powerhouse… he’s a genius in his own right!

5. Real Reporting – If this is to be a Clark Kent story, then this sequel needs to be a Thriller. Man of Steel already hinted at the idea of mankind not being trust worthy. I think this would be the perfect vehicle to further explore that notion. I want to see Clark develop his investigative skills as a reporter. Let him make newbie mistakes and butt heads with Lois and Perry. Goyer and Snyder need to do the opposite of what they have done in MOS and fill the movie with suspense and mystery! In MOS from the get go we know who Zod is, that he’s bad and that he’ll be hunting down Clark the moment he’s freed. The creators cannot do that in this movie! If it is about Clark Kent and reporting then it cannot be predictable!

6. President Luthor – Like many of you I am dying to see Alexander Luthor in the sequel but not as a villain but as a friend. Goyer has already put it out there that in this world the head of Lexcorp is more of a Bill Gates figure. What if Clark has trouble making friends in Metropolis? What if he ends up becoming good friends with mr. Luthor after a couple interviews or writing a story on him? I would like to see Lex and Clark develop a bond like in All-Star Superman. Maybe Clark could be the one to encourage him to run for president. Seeing how Clark has a gift for seeing the good in others it’s not a far stretch… To me that was another thing I loved about Smallville, having Clark and Lex have been best friends gave their relationship more depth and emotional punch especially when it later takes a drastic turn for the worst. We desperately need to see that happen on the big screen!

7. Kryptonite – Kryptonite is and has always been Lex Luthor’s best weapon against the MOS. If he is in it then there also must be Kryptonite. That being said we don’t want another Superman Returns! Considering how powerful MOS has made Superman I think he can handle some metahumans on top of having to deal with his first known weakness. That way he is actually upping the stakes and pushing himself to become even more powerful in this movie than we have just seen him in his origin story. I don’t want the kryptonite to be in Smallville. That small town has seen enough destruction… I want Snyder to take us elsewhere. He has already expressed his desire to make Superman go global in the next MOS so make it happen. BANE5000 came up with the amazing idea that "when Zod and his World Engine machines were beginning to terra form Earth into Krypton, in turn they were making and forming the natural resources Krypton would have possessed, including kryptonite. So as the terra forming was changing the landscape of Earth, it created kryptonite crystals/minerals in Earths landscape." Highly doubt Goyer and Snyder are paying attention to any of this but a fanboy can dream they get this kryptonite thing right...

Plot Suggestions - Lex Luthor hires Star-Labs’ Doctor Abernathy to secretly create Kryptonite powered soldiers aka the Anti-Superman Army. When the experiments on former soldier John Corben goes wrong 3 innocent employees / bystanders experience mutations and develop dreadfully painful and toxic abilities! Albert Michaels becomes Atomic Skull, Clay Ramsey becomes Kryptonite Man, Rudy Jones becomes Parasite and John Corben becomes Metallo. Together they go on a revenge spree against their creator and Lexcorp.

Clark is tasked to cover this story and after interviewing Lex, Clark believes him to be the victim. So he publishes a story that shows how Lex Luthor isn't just a victim of defamation (aka corporate slander) but also a leader that has helped rebuild Metropolis and in turn the perfect presidential candidate! Clark and Lex start spending more time together and develop a great friendship but Lois isn't convinced of Lex Luthor’s innocence. Clark and Lois butt heads over the matter which leads Clark to confront Lex and have him reveal that the two were once a couple but things between them ended on a bad note. This revelation drives a wedge between Lois and Clark who decides to find comfort in the arms of Lana Lang.

Superman attempts to address Lex’s problem and takes on the kryptonite powered team of villains who have been attacking various Lexcorp facilities across the world. The fight ends with Superman being presumed dead, Lois retrieving his body and having it returned to Smallville. After a long recovery Clark decides to take a closer look into the matter as a reporter. Knowing that he's still not at 100%, Lois attempts to recruit Lana to help talk him out of it
. Lois tracks down Lana Lang only to find out that she's been cheating on Clark the whole time they've been together. She returns home with the bad news but Clark is already gone.

Clark uses his creativity to take each member of the Anti-Superman Army out one by one until none are left. When he discovers the truth that Lex Luthor is the mastermind responsible behind the metahumans he has just defeated, Clark is forced to confront and eventually betray his best friend. Luthor who was running for president is arrested and taken out of the race. The movie ends with Superman tracking down where Lexcorps has been hiding the remaining Kryptonite and finding with it another Kryptonian ship.

i agree 100% especially when i comes to lex luthor, one thing above all else i loved in smallville was the realtionship between clark and lex and how they slowly drifted apart as lex because suspicious and distrussfull. if they managed to get that on film (he could be friend in MOS2 and then after the events of JL film he because distrustfull of these heroes and perhaps the villian could try to kill him which would make him even more distrusfull of people with powers). love it.

@ muzillu - ahahaha I didn't even notice that lol I need to re-edit this :P

@ GliderMan - He doesn't trust Superman but that doesn't mean he can't become friends with Clark Kent...

@ kinghilk - Glad to see I'm not the only one that wants to see these things. For MOS 3 I would like to see the House of El go up against Brainiac similarly to in Superman: Unbound.

I think they should stick with Lex liking Clark Kent and hating Superman like in All-Star Superman. That would be funny

I like this a lot! When Clark writes about Lex going for Pres would it some thing subtle like at the end of the article he says "Lex is a great leader! I would vote for him any day" or a whole article about how Lex should be President, or somewhere in the middle?

Blackreverend - 6/17/2013, 9:37 AM
@ Spidey5194 - That's actually exactly what I mean. that's for reminding me of All-Star Superman lol I just edited that in as an example now :)

@ SupermansBeard - I'm willing to wait for the third instalment to see them introduced.

@ SotoJuiceMan - it wouldn't be weird if Clark is the reporter that gives him a shot at presidency. Especially if like you said Lexcorp helps to rebuild Metropolis lol I'm going to steal that one :P Definitely no Brainiac until MOS 3 but why stop at Metallo?

@ RedHood13 - Glad you see it working too :D
Supes17
Supes17 - 6/17/2013, 9:53 AM
I think that the sequel should focus on rebuilding Metropolis.

Luthor is a Bruce Wayne CEO type character that wants to help the city to boost his image. Bruce Wayne also appears to help rebuild the city, which is where he meets Superman. They have a rivalry which might be a comic relief in the film.

He also distrusts Superman. The government, still afraid of a super-powered being, seeks Lex's aid for technology and weapons. They begin to spy using surveillance equipment, tring to figure out who he is and make weapons for the day that Superman goes rogue.

Superman's focus should be adapting to his new lifestyle of double identity and his growing relationship with Lois, who he wants to keep safe.

Something goes wrong between Lex and Supes, leading to Luthor's hatred of Superman. After Superman battles Brainiac, Brainiac and Lex become one, and he is elected president, leading up to the third and final film of the trilogy.

All they have to do is have an epic showdown, introduce Wonder Woman at the end and BAM... Justice League.

One of things I want to see in the sequel is an improved version of the costume. The first suit Clark used was to highlight he was an alien looking to find his place in the world. In the sequel, Superman gets a new suit to show that he has accepted his place as Earth's protector. This new suit should be a hybrid between his classic outfit and the New 52 armor.

You make a very good argument about the sequel. The proposed story seems good but I take issue with the fact that Lana cheats on Clark just so that Lois can be the ideal love interest. In my opinion, Lana might be a spy working for Lex or maybe she cannot bear to see Clark risking his life everyday.

@ Supes17 - If we agree on anything it's that Superman's focus in the sequel should be adapting to his new lifestyle of double identity and rebuilding Metropolis.

@ LeaderVladimir - I get what you're saying about the suit but if he makes one of his own how will it be undestructable? In my opinion, if you make Lana a spy working for Lex, that would imply that Lex knows Clark is Superman. :S

@ KryptonianAbominationClone - Well we definitely don't agree on muc lol h :D

It's just a little idea I came up within a minute lol. I still think that the government would still secretly make weapons. Maybe we'll get some Amanda Waller/Cadmus action with Emil Hamilton like in JLU

I really like your ideas for the sequel.

What happened to the other World Engine on the other side of the planet? I don't femember if it went through the black hole as well. Could Brainiac emerge from that?
MaxFaraday
MaxFaraday - 6/17/2013, 11:22 AM
you don't have to say you liked the movie if you wrote an article full of reasons why you didn't like the movie. you're right about some of that stuff, but from what this first movie already is, you'll never get what you want from the sequel. you'll have to accept that when an alien with superpowers lives on earth for 30 whatever years and occasionally saves peoples lives, someone is going to notice and remember his face. you'll have to be ok with the fact that he and louis are gonna be getting it on for the foreseeable future of this franchise. and you'll just have to understand that this is not Smallville - they don't have 10 seasons of episodes to get dating and best friend stuff in there.

@ Pitt - Well I like Almighty1080's idea to (have Clark on an assignment to interview Lex, hes waiting in the waiting room and Bruce Wayne walks out of Lex's office. Clark sees who he is, walks up to him to try to talk to him regarding his involvement with the rebuilding of metropolis. Clark says, "Hi I'm Cla.." Bruce "I know who you are, you owe me a satellite." Lex interrupts them and Clark turns back to Bruce who vanished.) But I really could live without a cameo...

@ Supes17 - I definitely see Amanda Waller in a possible Nick Fury-like role but Dr. Hamilton got sucked in the Black hole. I'm pretty sure the other World Engine is still around but I would prefer for Brainiac's origin to be based around his interpretation in Superman: Unbound.

@ MaxFaraday - I saw the movie twice on saturday lol if I sayid I liked the movie I meant it. Liking a movie doesn't mean you ignore it's flaws. What I like about this site is that you can share your ideas and get positive feedback. That's all I'm doing :) I'm well aware that what goes into the next movie won't be decided by me. I thank you for reading my editorial and sharing your thoughts though. :P

My idea to introduce Kryptonite is simple:

When Zod and his World Engine machines were beginning to terra form Earth into Krypton, in turn they were making and forming the natural resources Krypton would have possessed, including Kryptonite. So as the terra forming was changing the landscape of Earth, it created Kryptonite crystals/minerals in Earths landscape. Now it just has to show miners or something discovering it in MOS2 and how it affects Supes.

Another thing to get right: Get a new writer, or have Nolan rewrite Goyer's script aka Batman Begins.

"I'm a Pulitzer Prize winning writer!"
"There's only one way this ends, either I die or you will."

NO SHIT ZOD, NO SHIT...

@ SymbioteJoker - Agreed...

@ BANE5000 - That's genius lol do you mind me adding that to my Kryptonite section?

@ Reasonnnn - Completely agree that Goyer is trouble but I don't want a Superman or a Justice League "a la Nolan"!

@ DukeAcureds - I have no clue why you are bringing her up! o.O

And when the miners are exploring the terraformed area, there is a cave in. When superman comes to save the day, he is weakened by the kryptonite presence. Maybe he's holding up some rubble and once everybody is safe and clear, he dropped against a wall breathing heavily, visibly strained and worried. He exits the cave week and stumbling, composes self and flies off. the camera pans out, like Google Maps and then shows that it's a satellite feed that looks is watching his office. maybe he said something like "Superman indeed" or press a button on his desk "Marcy get me the contract on the downtown excavations" "tell them I'll do it for free hell I'll even rebuild the whole area"

thedude2936 - 6/17/2013, 7:03 PM
@Bane 5000 idk man, kryptonite isn't just a mineral. Its a result of a chemical reaction in the minerals of krypton because when the core collapsed it fused the elements together causing them to become radioactive and become kryptonite

I think Nolan would do fine in the script. Snyder is directing so it would still have his style.

As for a villain, I can't see anyone except for Metallo. Its a great way to introduce Kryptonite into the cinematic universe. The villain in the second movie has to be earth bound not tied to krypton. If it was brainiac, I'm sure the govt would tell Supes to kindly leave bc if it wasn't for him they wouldnt be attracting so much bullshit from outer space lol
Blackreverend
Blackreverend - 6/18/2013, 7:00 AM
@ ThunderKat - Spoiler Warning? Never thought of that lol kinda late now.

@ lucio7lopez - better? I'm kinda shocked I made that mistake a few times :P

@ TheTank - That's so true bro... Totally forgot about that ship.

@ cervantewilson2345 - the genesis ship was sent to earth during Krypton's expansion era. When Clark put in his key thingy the ship must have modified the suit somehow to represent the house of El or another possibility is that Kryptonians can live for thousands of years because Jor El said he designed the ship himself.

@ Supes17 - Nolan is my favorite writer/director but I just don't think comic/sci-fi is his niche.

@ Drittenz - I had no clue where u were going at first but yeah that's not a bad idea. Except Superman would know from the beginning that Lexcorp is up to something.

Where did you get that magazine cover? :P

I like where BANE500 is going, but what if the terra form device uncovered DOOMSDAY!!!!!!! The entire movie is a build up to that first punch superman takes from doomsday and then cut to black and then fade back in with superman's tattered cape flapping in the wind on a computer screen over a shadowy figure looking on (i.e. Batman) would be a great way to bring in JL in a world without superman because people need to step up...sets up at least 3 more movies.
