Brandon Routh PROBABLY Won't Ever Play Superman Again

But he would... if he was asked!

Firstshowing.net has received information from a Brazilian movie site called Omelete, that recently interviewed Brandon Routh about the upcoming CBM "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World". They got some quotes from the actor about the possibility of him donning the cape again.

Routh (via a rough translation) says that he knows nothing about what's currently going on and, most importantly, that his contract to play Superman has since expired. "But if they call me again, back to the character without thinking twice"

I really enjoyed "Superman Returns". And i thought Routh did a great job as Supes. Of course, the movie could, and should have been much better, but i maintain that if Brian Singer was to get another crack at a sequel he would give the fans what they wanted to see.

Anyway, that all seems moot because its almost certain at this point that if we ever see another Superman movie, it will be a Warner's reboot special! Singer is completely replaceable as director imo, but i think it would be a shame to lose Routh.

I doubt Singer will be back, but I would love to see Routh get another shot. Even people who disliked 'Returns' thought he was well cast, and I don't think he got the chance to really make the role his own; instead they just had him do his best Chris Reeve imitation.

GUNSMITH - 7/3/2009, 9:44 AM
HE WAS COOL, HE LOOKED THE PART, EVEN SOUNDED LIKE REEVE, BUT HE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED CLARK WAY MORE NERDIER, OVER THE TOP NERDY JUST LIKE CHRISTOPHER REEVE, CLARK KENT HAS TO BE SO REMOVED FROM THE MAN OF STEEL LOOK TO BE A PROPER BELIEVABLE DISGUISE, REEVES HAD THE SLICKED BACK NERD HAIR AND WAS ALMOST EVERY SECOND BUMBLY AND NERDY..THATS WHAT LEFT ME SOUR FROM ROUTHS PERFORMANCE..ID LIKE TO SEE HIM PLAY IT AGAIN..HIM OR TOM WELLING

I AGREE SMITTY, BUT HE DOES LOOK THE PART AND PEOPLE HAVE WONDERED WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE IN THE SUIT, OR I WANNA SEE WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SMALLVILLE, THERES THAT AIR AROUND THE IDEA..BUT YEAH HE NEEDS TO BE A DIFFRENT ENTITY..SMALLVILLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE "BEFORE"THE AFTER IS A DIFFRENT CLARK ENTIRELY ANYWAYS WITH A DIFFRENT MINDSET, THE TRANSITION WOULD WORK

Routh nailed both Clark and Sups. He must stay. Also Singer would deliver a good sequel with a supervillain which he promised.

No way you are among a few people that enjoyed SR. There are many many many people who not only enjoyed SR but loved it.

We are still holding out hope that WB will come to their senses and re-sign Brandon Routh for a new Superman movie be it a sequel or a re-boot. No one fits the part better than him.

superdog: lol, Zack and Miri was a great movie! Thats actually the only film apart from Returns that ive seen him in-he was pretty funny!

Superman Returns was an awful film but Routh was one of the few good things about it. Theres no need for a reboot (even non comic book fans know the character origins by now) just a new director and writers and forget all that Superman having a son crap from Returns and actually make a new film its own thing rather than trying to copy the 70's films as Singer did.

Yeah i guess your right Vgerland! It just seems that whenever i mention i liked it, i get about 10 people telling me i'm nuts! I think ill alter that though..judging by these comments, its the ones that didn't like it that are in the minority..

@Josh

couldn't agree more!! superman returnswas horrible. is it wrong to want a superman movie where he actually punches something...anything? i would love for them to make a new supes movie, but for god's sake can we get brainiac, darkseid? hell i'd even settle for metallo at this point. if they put luthor is a new one, at least let him make bizarro in it...

Shaman - 7/3/2009, 10:22 AM
SR was decent. And i was glad that Brandon didn't "over do" Clark a la Reeve because it would have been too much for our generation. Routh's Clark was perfect the way it was. As for his Superman... cohones wouldn't hurt!!!

Superman Returns was worse than the Season 8 finale of Smallville but instead of 40mins of Superman not throwing a punch it was 2 and a half long, boring hours!
Bamf7
Bamf7 - 7/3/2009, 10:38 AM
Yes! Bring Routh back for the next installment and (hopefully) the Justice League movie! And I still want Spacey as Lex, because he was GREAT. I just don't want him to be the main villain. Maybe have him running for President or something as a side storyline. I'd love to see Zod, Doomsday, OR Braniac.

Oh, and I hated the fact that the big S on Superman's chest was made of tiny S's. Don't know why...just REALLY bugged me.

SUPERMAN RETURNS is way better than the season finale of SMALLVILLE??? What is wrong with you lol!? ; D

Smitty, I agree with you. I thought Routh did great as Superman. I loved Superman Returns, it paid homeage to the films I grew up watching and loving, even though im only 20, and wasnt even born when those came out, its what I saw when I was a kid. Seeing some of the same lines used in the original such as "swell" and the flying safety statistics, it brought back memories from when I watched the originals. For a sequal I want Routh, and yes, more action.

dizzle716 - 7/3/2009, 10:42 AM
I think Routh did a good job with what he had to work with. IMO, I don't think it was a very well thought out script. Turned Superman into an even bigger p***y than he was depicted as in the earlier films (though I still love 'em all), and the story moved WAAAAAYYYYY too slow. Maybe Singer would do a better job, maybe not; but I definitely think when they do another, he should not be the first choice.

superdog
superdog - 7/3/2009, 10:53 AM
The movie was decent Roth was good. The only
problem with a new direction but with Roth still as supes is the confusion factor. Especially with a son. We don't need supes being an absent father and paying child support. And by the way the worst thing about that movie was lois lane. Bosworth was horrible
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/3/2009, 10:56 AM
LEE: no because at least in the SV finale there was a little bit of action and a few twists and turns-Returns was just one long, badly acted pile of crap!

this wouldn't be getting talked about if singer had made a better film that didn't cost poop tons of money. routh is a good superman, spacey and kumar are not good bad guys
Shaman
Shaman - 7/3/2009, 11:07 AM
Superman would lose against Jim Morrison. Routh's Clark has a better shot.
roberda31
roberda31 - 7/3/2009, 11:07 AM
I blame the writers for the failure of Superman Returns. The movie business is about making money and paying homeage to the film of 20 years ago is fine and good but its main purpose was to make MONEY like the Dark Knight. What if Chris Nolan paid homemage to Tim Burton's Batman would it had been a success? NO!! Chris Nolan made Batman his OWN Bryan singer and the writers failed to do so thats why they will reboot it. Every sucessfull superhero movie that has came out in the past 10 years has had a supervillian on par with the superhero and what do the writers of Superman Returns give us? Superman Returns had a 250million budget and you mean to tell me the best they could come up with for a plot was Lex with another real estate scheme LOL LOL LOL LOL it deserved to fail. The crew of Smallville with its much lower budget has more imagination than the writers of Superman Returns. I can guarantee that every movie from DC from now on will have the same "realness" feel to it like the Dark Knight. Hancock even had more substance than Superman Returns. Bring in a villian that we have never seen before like Mongul or Darksied. The new Superman movie has to be orgininal and action packed. I believe DC may follow Marvel's lead and have all their movies in the same universe. Superman Returns should have been the sequel to Superman II back in the mid 80s because thats where in belongs.

Singer wrote SR. And they're next movie is an interstellar police corps... not exactly "Nolanversy". Not bitching, just saying... you know.

SR was not bad,but it was not FUN like a supes movie should be=WAY WAY WAY more action
supes reboot+brandon routh+acttion-kate bosworth=awesome movie
they need braniac(new one),parasite,metallo,zod,doomsday,the cyborg+no luthor=awesome movieS

BLADE4040 - 7/3/2009, 11:25 AM
I liked Routh as Superman\Clark Kent it was the storyline that was CRAP. Get rid of Bryan "sweetcheeks" Singer and his love story bullcrap and bring in some of those villians NewAvenger just mention. Bring Zod and some of his lackeys from the P-ZONE and lets introduce Supergirl into the mix with some high powered action.

there should have been more action no doubt, but the "love story crap" is a staple of Superman! In pretty much every comic Clark/Supes relationship with Lois is the main focus of the story. When hes on earth anyway, obviously the focus shifts when hes space fightin! But i think Singer handled it pretty well, he never got schmaltzy unlike a certain Mr Bay! Bosworth was a bad Lois though, she didnt flat out suck but she was badly miscast. Spacey? was Spacey! He doesnt exactly have many layers as an actor. I would take Rosenbaums Lex over his any day!
Osiris
Osiris - 7/3/2009, 11:48 AM
All they need to do to make a great supes movie is keep the cast from returns and add a super villain, the movies need more then just Lex.

@Shaman@ hell yah Elisha for Super Girl!!! god damn she is sexy.

TheDurkinKnight - 7/3/2009, 11:50 AM
WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! The horrific sin that was "Returns" will be undone!!

@Roar, I agree that the whole Clark/Lois relationship is a staple, but wont you concede that it needs to go mroe the direction of "Smallville" where Lois actually NOTICES Clark, rather than treating him like complete shit?
