Bryan Singer on Superman Sequel, "I’m going to take a brief pause."

Even when you ask Bryan Singer outright whether he will be returning to do the next Superman sequel, he STILL won't answer directly...

Whether you want him back or not, Bryan Singer's name still keeps popping up as the possible director for the next Superman movie. Credited as the best X-Men movie director, many fans trashed his first effort at the man of steel saying "Superman Returns" was too full of angst and devoid of action.

While many reports talk of Warner Bros wanting to take a different and darker tact with the Superman franchise, and also liking the idea of dumping the last movie in favor of a reboot, other insiders still say Singer is involved. To clarify the matter, intrepid reporters at MTV asked him outright whether he was doing the deed, and here's what they got...

"At the moment I can’t really talk about that," said Singer. "I wish I could. From my perspective I’m going to take a brief pause. ["Valkyrie"] has taken a long time so I’m going to take a pause. A movie like that takes some time to do right. That’s all I can say about that."

Slippery little bugger isn't he?

So, to sum up, we basically STILL don't know whether he is involved or not.

Again, his job as a director was not the issue. The script sucked! Same story with X-men 3, we are so quick to blame the "director". It's singer's fault because he wrote superman's script but still did a bang up job filming it! I'm not worried if he "directs" the next superman movie, but nothing more.

Shaman-

It is however the director's job to "approve" the script. If a movie bombs, it's the directors fault because they oversee the whole movie. He should have kicked back the script (in this case to himself), but he didn't. He got so caught up with trying to do Richard Donner "justice", that he forgot he was making his own stand-alone film.

Richard Donner wouldn't have taken Superman that route, just look what he was able to do with the scraps of Superman 2!!! He took a joke of a movie and made it great!!

I'm over Bryan Singer, he needs to take a walk from the Superman franchise. He had his shot and dropped the ball. I just hope they have some sense and hand it over to Mark Miller.

Brief pause...for real? You've had your pause. If you can't give us a straight answer after years of asking, you're not doing the next movie. You sucked, Singer. Guys, he doesn't belong on this franchise, not if we want the action packed Superman that the fans are craving. I hate making the comparison, but there is a reason that Smallville is on it's 8th season. It balances the melodrama with decent action and effects, and on a TV show budget. Seriously, that show is of better quality than Superman Returns. Singer better get his head out of his A$$.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Superman Returns was NOT that bad. Sure it had its faults (Superkid, Not enough action and Kate Bosworth). But it brought Superman back in a good way, without another origin story. We all know Supermans history, do we really want to see it again. I dont. Singers a good directer, he just went to soft on Superman Returns. He didnt ruin the franchise forever. Its easily fixable. Bring in Bizzaro to kill the Superkid, Have a all out brawl between Supes and Bizzaro, switch Bosworth for the Smallville Lois (shes 10 times hotter and has the right attitude as lois on smallville.) finally have Doomsday appear at the end to set up for the Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen and Return of Superman for the next few movies. All Singer has got to do is follow the comics. Those were the best Superman stories ever.

The tragic thing about the Chris Reeve Superman franchise is that right after Superman II it never had a descent follow up or conclusion. Like its contemporary franchise Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Superman deserves to have an en ending before a reboot. To reboot the Superman franchise now would left the story --the sad Clark and Lois break-up in Superman II or worse Superman having a son in Superman Returns-- forever hanging. Bryan Singer Superman Returns provided us a descent continuation and and possibly a very interesting direction for the story.

I have already posted my suggested story,

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/superman_movies/superman_the_man_of_steel/news/?a=5107

and I could see others are already posting some interesting directions as well. Just as dxperry said in his post Bryan only needs to base his story on some of the best Superman stories and make his movies a bit shorter and more action pack.

Luthor presence on all sequel is OK for me provided that other Super Villain should take center stage and him as an accomplice or even cameo. If possible include how finally Luthor finally reached the pinnacle of his criminal career. He is not the greatest criminal mind for nothing.

Again please do not repeat the Salkinds greatest sin in movie history by ignoring to end the story left by Donners Superman II . Somehow I sensed it is one of the reasons we demanded a revival of the franchise in the first place. A continuation or a closure of that final scene in Superman II. Let Brian Singer continue and finish his trilogy which is a direct continuation of Superman II. Then when its done thats the time we reboot.

Talond-

I was saying that Singer did a great "directing" job and really screwed the pooch on the script. Which means he would do a great job directing the next one as long as the script is Mark Millar's trilogy. And the only reason behind the fact that a lot of people including myself still liked superman returns was BECAUSE it was well filmed. It was so well filmed that most of us could even get passed the actuall script being the worst possible superman story ever written intergalactically and still kinda like the movie.

And Richard Donner actually approved Singer's script...mabey sarcastically but Singer innocently got hyped and forgot there were actually millions of fans that demand continuity and logic. Now just imagine if he had not done a good job filming it... Now that would've been the "actuall" death of superman and of his career.

You guys want a good example of the contrary to superman returns? Batman and Robin ring any bells... Joel Schumaker... anybody? He was such a bad director that he was actually able to screw up perfectly good scripts. Now if Christopher Nolan would've taken up those scripts, just imagine the monumental difference it would have been.

And for the record, a reboot can be done at any time. Its very definition is to leave the past behind to start fresh. It was done with Batman and it SHOULD be done with Superman pronto! It is not normal for a whole team of superheroes, which have evolved individually, to have the time to be created and put on the big screen before a mere "refresh" can be done with a single solitary world wide fan favorite character such as Superman. Makes no logic what so ever.

-You got the actor (Brandon Rooth was good)...CHECK!
-You got the script writter, Mark Millar...CHECK!
-You got the director, Singer can still do a great job (like always)...CHECK!

Then get off your asses DC/WB!!! Stop swimming in the money BatmanTDK gave you and make even more by kicking it up a notch with Superman!!!

Man this sucks.. I can't believe this guy can't even answer that question. I don't blame him as the studio likely have him in limbo so what can he say. I think even he understands his installment of Superman sucked by most standards. I mean come on the movie took $250 million to make? WTF? What happened to the other $200 million? Someone is walking around with $200 million in a swiss bank account somewhere!

I am a HUGE fan of the Chris Reeve Superman movies and I believe the scrpit for Superman Returns was fundamentally flawed. I mean come on.. he's been gone for 6 years and you don't even show us what the hell he was up to?? all we get is some vague discussion between he and his mom's? WHACK! Then he gets back and he has a baby momma? With the worst pick for Lois Lane I could have imagined. I mean did Singer owe her a favor? I know it's 2008 and we live in strange times but come on we are not talking about Batman or some hero with a distorted value system we are talking about SUPES! He stands for the best in us all.. I think Singer should have focused on how out of step with hunmanity Supes has become and how he can't understand our self destructive nature balanced with a villian who wants to cultivate all that negativity and rule over all with super powers rivaling Superman.. How hard would that have been it's like Superman II with a better villian some CGI and superman actually losing his temper a few times getting beat up then doing the beating up and showing how strong he really is.. Not difficult.. WHAT HAPPENED?? All that would have cost a mere $50 million more.. Now we are at $100 million.. how in the world did they end up at $250 million dollars on that movie? I have a copy of the movie and it looks great in high def but besides the scene of him catching the plane that Lois was on int he beginnig I can't find a good enough reason to watch it again..

Lois Lane should be replaced with Michelle Monaghan

I don't want to see Lex Luthor again

Leave the Cryptonite at home.. that was the worst part of Superman Returns..

Concentrate on the fight scenes like in Superman Doomsday.. I want to see buildings falling down and tanks thrown around..

Loose the old school suit.. it was too dark and I agree with gunsmoke the "S" was too small and the collar was too high. Looked like Superman from the 60's... maybe Singer was watch old school Adam West's Batman reruns..

I'd like to see him tear that suit up and jump into the Black and silver one at some point.. maybe not permenantly but that would be awesome..

Hey grif! Contrary to what you believe people do ignore bad sequels which in turn results to poor box office and worse even a death of a franchise. Bad sequels makes it difficult to move forward to make more! Because of this a reboot is considered -- that is hopefully IF they the audience or producers still care. I respect you guys there who like Superman 3 and 4. I myself consider the battle between good and bad Superman in III a classic and you can't simply ignore Chris Reeve's poignant effort to make a descent seguel with a complete original casts using a very limited budget on Sup 4. Take note that I do not ignore them but has considered them only as a minor importance. in fact as a Superman fan I do keep a dvd copy of those sequels. Because honestly they are still somehow likable.

My point is that those sequels are terribly executed and it has losts direct continuity and it becomes irrelevant and at times -sorry to say-- to some an eye sore. And its really so sad that because of this bad sequels we didn't got the chance to see Chris Reeve again make great sequels or at least complete the obvious incomplete superman story. And again why? Because most people do IGNORE watching them resulting to bad sales and eventually producers IGNORE to produce them.

Shaman was correct to compare that Schumacher's Batman & Robin was worst. Bryan singer may not gave us a spectacular sequel but it was descent, it provided us a continuity and best of all it open a very interesting direction. And putting it from that perspective its clear that Superman does not need a reboot which means to IGNORE all of its 5 sequels. What I believe is that since the franchise hasn't yet undergone the same travesty as "Batman & Robin" what it needs is to maintain its continuity and use it to tell other great superman stories.

I see your point kalabog because in my heart, i don't really want there to be a "reboot" but i mean... he's got a kid now...dude, that never even happened in the comics! Well i guess superboy "could" be his son instead of his clone... but i really really wanna see Mark Millar make a kick ass trilogy! I'm tired of Metropolis man! I want deep space fights!!! And bizzaro isn't that good as a bad guy. I want someone more colossal, someone that'll pose a REAL threat, a REAL challenge... someone like Doomsday but since they don't want to make his death story on the big screen... someone similar. In short i want him to fight Abomination...eh ....Apocalypse....no eh... Freakin GALACTUS!!! Damn, Marvel has all the best bad guys! You guys get my drift.

superman 3 had its moments, but even as a kid watching 4 in the cinema i hated it! yeah shaman space fights and big bads would be cool, i reckon thats how singer would eventually take the franchise..he should have probably did it with returns but he was too concerned with paying homage to donner..i hope he makes at least 1 more
