DC Releases Superman vs. Muhammad Ali Poster

DC Releases Superman vs. Muhammad Ali Poster

On paper it sounds ridiculous, but back in 1978 Superman vs. Muhammad Ali actually worked as a comic book story co-written by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams, with art by Adams.

Offers DC, "The Superman vs. Muhammad Ali special became an instant classic when it was released in 1978. Neal Adams' kinetic, eye-catching art was presented in a special oversized format that was difficult to reprint, so the comic has remained unavailable since Ali's last heavyweight championship. Now for the first time, DC Comics is proud to release the renowned comic book at its original size in hardcover facsimile and deluxe editions."

Both will be available on November 10th.

I still have this one from back in the day. My brother and I wore that book out, in the good ol days when you read comic books for fun, not this cgc collecting foolishness! Ya rolled 'em up and put 'em in your back pocket on your way to your friends house to trade and have a great time.

@JacobMc - Being the Greatest wasn't about boxing records, its about impact. In my book his greatest k.o. was the US government! He made a stand like a man and resisted flying half-way around the world to kill people who did nothing to us, while having to face the harsh barbs of racism and Jim Crow from his own so-called countrymen. Ali was in fact, one of the best fighters in the ring too. He won more championship matches than anyone except Joe Louis. Ali defeated the toughest most fearsome heavyweights. AND as you will read in this comic, he whooped The Steel Don from Krypton, The Man of Steel, Mama Kent's Baby Boy - Superman!

@Jacob Ali's charisma is part of it. Besides its hard to watch his fights and not see something special.

Anyways I love Neal Adams. One of my favorite artists especially for that era.

Mike Tyson would have not stood a chance against Ali in his prime. Tyson didn't hit even as hard as Foreman, not to mention Ernie Shaver. Ali was a far more precise and intelligent fighter than Tyson.

Admittedly they bent over backwards to come up with a way to get Superman and Ali into the ring together, but they did it -- with an alien invasion backdrop to it all. The art by Adams is truly spectacular. A goofy but pleasant return trip to the past.

DC will do anything for a buck. These are those comics (much like anything to do with super pets, Kypto?) that DC shouldn't be proud about. The concept of a human boxer being any sort of competition for "the man of steel" is silly even in a comic book world.

Who won that fight anyway? Wasn't it Ali?
(I honestly don't remember as I was 2 when this came out.)

man, this takes me back. I wasn't reading comics regularly when this came out, but I was a big fan of Ali, so I borrowed a friend's copy to read this. It was a fun story from a fun decade to be a kid. I'm glad to see DC reprint something a bit different like this from their archives.

@JonathanisMagnum1985 - Well said! You're suprisingly knowledgeable and insightful for a fan of your age!

Two cultural icons! A dream matchup! Very relevant to its time! Those were the sentiments surrounding the release of this tabloid special back in 1978! This book was one of many very successful marketing stunts that DC used to raise Superman's profile in order to promote his upcoming film to non-comic readers!

For those that don't know, Superman was de-powered for the fight -- and lost! DC didn't just throw the two of them together in a boxing ring for an exhibition match; there was an alien plot at work leading up to the bout! I recommend it to all who haven't already read it - it's not quite as corny as it sounds! One must take into account that today's sensibilties differ greatly from those at the time of the comic's original release!

As for the size - I loved these Treasury Editions back in the day! Neal Adams was the perfect artist to showcase in this format! Bring 'em back!
