Essay: Why I Would want to be Superman.

Essay: Why I Would want to be Superman.

For school I was asked to write a sample college essay of 100-300 words answering the question:
" If you could become another person, real or fictional, for one day, who would you become and why?"
Here is my response, any input is welcome and thanks for reading.

At one point or another, everyone has wanted to be someone else for a day, whether it is a real celebrity, or a fictional character. If I could be anyone I wanted for a day, I would choose to become the fictional DC Comics character Superman. Most people would assume this is due to his superhuman abilities and powers, such as flight. While they are nice, the real reason I want to become Superman is because of the impact he can make on the world. As a boy I was always drawn to Superman because he was the ideal superhero, strong, saving lives, and down to earth, but as I grew older I understood more and more about Superman as a character. The reason he is considered the greatest superhero is not because of his powers. It is because Superman is a symbol of hope.

Superman is that icon that little children, and even adults, look to if they are sad, frightened, or just in need of inspiration. That is a prime example of why I would want to be Superman. If I could become Superman, I would keep the world safe. I would be able to help thousands of people within a matter of minutes. People wouldn’t have to worry about crimes, or having to look over their shoulders out of fear of being robbed or attacked. War would be non-existent, and people would be able to feel safe and wouldn’t have to worry about murders and crimes anymore.

Superman has an aura of reassurance about him, it’s as though his presence alone can make the direst situation seem safer, as though you know everything will be alright. One of the best things about being Superman is his effect on other people. He is a prime example of the expression “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”, living out the life that every American should. A life of honesty, morality, and integrity. Superman makes people strive to be the very best they can be, and that is something greater than any super power. For all these reasons, that is why I would choose to become superman.

Nice job, yea Superman rules. Hopefully MOS will be awesome and people will remember how great he really is.

It's tough being a Superman fan and watching all these great Batman and Marvel movies come out. I really think there's some kind of Superman conspiracy lol.

You believe Superman is an expression of "Truth, Justice, and the American Way", yet if you became Superman, "Wars would be non-existant". What exactly do you mean by that? Would you just go out and and force other countries to abid by your rules? Would you just go and become Hitler? Would you try to shape the political world as you see fit? That doesn't sound like the "American Way" too me. Superman doesn't kill because he agrees with the idea that everybody has the right to a fair trial. He's not there to set the rules of which life should go by. He doesn't think he has the authority to do that. I think he would feel the same about wars.

I edited, re-organized a little and added a few of my own thoughts. Feel free to discard or use this if you like. From one Superman fan to another...

At one point or another, I have often wondered what it would be like to live a day in the life of another individual. Whether it is a real celebrity, someone from the past or a fictional character, the imagination runs wild to the potential possibilities of walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. If I could be anyone I wanted for a single day, I would choose to become the fictional DC Comics character Superman. Most people would assume this is due to his superhuman abilities. While they are nice perks, the real reason I would want to become Superman is because of what the character meant to me as a child as well as the impact I feel that I could make on the world.

As a boy I was always drawn to Superman because he was the ideal superhero. He was strong enough to face any adversary or tackle any impossible situation. While being near invincible could easily make someone arrogant, Superman was always humble, self sacrificing and striving to uphold his moral integrity. Besides that, his genuine intention to always do good deeds while never seeking reward and his ability to swoop in and save the day under a variety of dire circumstances always inspired me.

Even though I still think fondly of my boyhood hero, as I grew older I began to understand more and more about Superman as a character. The reason he is considered the greatest superhero is not because of his powers, it is because Superman is a symbol of hope. For when people are without hope, I feel they give up on themselves as well as the world around them leading to negative actions. Superman is an icon that people of all ages can look to if they are sad, frightened, or simply in need of inspiration. That is a prime example of why I would want to be Superman. If I could become Superman, even if only for a day, I would keep his legacy in tact and do my best to keep the world safe and hope alive.

Backed with an arsenal of godly superpowers, Superman has an aura of reassurance about him as though his presence alone can make the scariest situation seem safer. Above all Superman inspires people to strive to be the very best they can be, and that is something greater than any super power. For all these reasons, this is why I would choose to become Superman.

Nice article. Superman definitely represents hope. Honestly though, I'd rather be Batman, not just because of his awesome gadgets... but that kick-ass tank!
