Henry Cavill On Adopting An American Accent For Man Of Steel

When Henry Cavill was cast as Superman there was a bit of a furor in certain fan circles that a character seen as an American icon would be played by a Brit. Most people didn't have an issue with this but one thing that may have been a concern was how Cavill would fare with the accent.

Well speaking to Total Film the young actor explains how he prepared his voice for it, and reveals the initial reactions of those that have heard it..

"Doing an American accent is about exercising the muscles in your throat and your mouth. Sometimes it can sound great for a long period of time, sometimes your inflection is wrong. It all depends. As long as you've got a professional watching over you saying, "You did this wrong, you did that wrong.." it can be made to seem effortless. But you still get days when it just seems to stick in your mouth."

So how does he rate his American accent now?

"I've been told I can be very good at it..but I know I've been very bad at it in the past!"

Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel is currently shooting in LA. Find out how authentic Cavill's accent is when the movie is released in 2013.

I wonder what it must be like to learn an 'American' accent. I mean...I'm an American every day, so my 'accent' is isn't really real. Lol I wonder what other people think it sounds like...do THEY know THEY have an accent? Man that's a brain-twister.

Certain actors are incredible at masking their true accent. One of the best would of course be,in my opinion, Hugh Laurie. He is the guy who plays Dr. House

@Sentry - So true about Hugh Laurie. I was knocked silly once I heard his actual accent. I didn't even know he was a Brit until then!

@Golden - Good question, but what IS a Kansas accent? Even as an American I couldn't pick that one out of a crowd of voices. Just as long as he doesn't slide back and forth like Fassbender did in First Class.

What is really considered an American accent tho? Because even in different parts of America you have different accents. Southern accent, northern accent, jersey accent and etc.

As someone who's natural accent is american, it feels so weird to think about someone attempting to talk like I do every day. I notice that it seems like whenever we as Americans try to attempt to do a British accent, it always sounds like we are either making fun of it, or it's not subtle enough and too over the top.

And when people who aren't that good at American accents try, it always seems like they end up sounding awkward.

Funny thing is, American's are the ones with an accent, not the Brits. It's called ENGLISH for a reason, people.

And why do the damn Redcoats get to bogart all the Superhero roles? I'm a little surprised that they didn't cast a British Captain America.

Americans don't have an accent. We talk normal. Everybody else needs to conform and comply. We lead , you follow.
Okay ,yeah I'm trolling , but I'm cracking myself up thinking how non-Americans are raging right now.

@jazzman - Of COURSE Americans can do British accents. Some actors can do them quite well, actually.

Oh, and Fassbender's accent WAS all over the place. The Irish did, in fact, keep slipping through. McAvoy had similar problems trying to stifle his Scottish accent.

I like British accent, it's really hot. Some women said that I have a cute accent... like Antonio Banderas XD!!!

Is there a single American accent? You have New York accent, Southern Accent, Black Accent, Chinese Accent, Indian Accent... the USA is a freakin mealting pot and everybody speaks the language in their own way.

@brazilianbatman... I don't think Henry is gay, Rodrigo Santoro played the bi sexual Xerxes in 300 and he looked totally gay flirting with Leonidas.

Interesting.... I didn't know American's had an accent... aside from Bawstan.

The American accent comes so naturally to me.

I bet I could have a British accent if I hung out there for a week :)
