Mark Millar Exasperates About Superman Franchise

Millar shares his thoughts about the latest developments of the ongoing Superman movie debacle.

Why is this a debacle? Because Warner Brothers has no idea which direction they want to take their most storied franchise Superman. Why you ask? Should this be a easy objective for the studio to accomplish? The answer off course is yes but if your Warner Brothers then the answer becomes more muddled as a result it seems of in house arguing.

"Millar talked about his fabled 'Superman' reboot, in which he teamed with an A-list director and a producer for a pitch. Millar says he's moved on from putting his efforts into the big-screen man of steel.

First posting:

"Warner's talked to us and a few other writer/ director teams, but things seem to be in stasis right now. As far as I understand, nothing is happening with Superman at the moment and so the director and I are just working on another project. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, no biggie."

In a follow up post he added:

"We're one of three teams they were in serious chats with (more for the director than me) and if Superman is available when we finish our next film who knows? But we're starting production on the new movie in June and so Superman absolutely not on our dance cards anytime soon. A shame, really, as we'd have completely reinvigorated it, but then again I like the idea of complete control over everything I'm doing now (which I have on all my projects). The idea of taking notes from the guys who liked the idea of Superman lying in bed for the final act of Returns doesn't sound good to me :)"

Please put Supes up against someone who can potentially beat the crap out of him! Enough of the sad sorry man scout they made Superman to be in Superman Returns! Lets hope the WB puts on the screen what the title hypes the film up to be "The Man of Steel."

DOOM just a hint to who ever gets to do this superman if another movie is made.. the only time i cared about superman or paid attention is when he died i got the comic when he got that ass kicked and i brought the animated dvd when he got his ass kicked and i loved it.

Definitely would be bad ass, but only if they use the four imposters and not the animated movie version. I liked the animated movie, but was very disappointed. Superman cannot be cloned. They messed that up bad. Plus, they didn't tell anything about Doomsday, what happened to him or what not. I would do it like the comics. Superman saving day, Doomsday, Superman Dead, Four Supermen show up right at the end, that's it for movie #1. Four Supermen save day, Cyborg shows his true colors, bad crap happens, maybe a cameo by GL, real Superman shows up at the end. That's movie #2. Movie #3 is an all out action movie, but kicking all over the place, Superman returns, then at the end, a new menace shows up, maybe Braniac, or General Zod (a kickass one, not some dude inhabited by him), or the Eradicator shows his original true colors.

They should do it like marvel is doing. Do the single movies first and have them all link together for the JLA movie.

if they do a reboot, they have to kind of restart the whole origin story and that will get boring because its been done way too many times. they should continue it with Routh, beef him up a lot and say he was more sappy and smaller because of a lack of yellow sun. then have doomsday arive and kill Supermans son, just by happens-stance, then go with the death and life of superman. simple as that

A reinvention of the superman story is like a reboot of Jesus H. Christ. If you change any two things, he becomes a different character. Just do it right! Jeez

enough of the reboot! put him in a full black leather costume. Give him light saber eyes and a dark brooding disposition.

WB suits - Please give this guy a shot. I'm done with Singer, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Sorry rorschach, I know how you feel about his take bro, but another bad superman flick will bury the franchise until I'm 50. I just don't think I'll live that long, so I need a fresh take now. Millar is talkin a good game, it could be just that, but I'm diggin the hell out his ideas far more than another fkn Lex Luthor stand-off. If I hear Jude Law for Zod, someone is getting stabbed in the eyes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. NO REBOOT!! Returns did not kill the frachise. Shit...episode 1and2 of Star Wars sucked, but if you if watch them in a row with episode 3 its good stuff. Just make the next superman movie 10 times better. Have Bizzaro and Braniac kill the kid and Lois's fiance and bad ass fight with Supes. That would be a helluva movie. Wasnt Mark Millar the guy would wanted to have Superman the last person on earth and then die? If he is then thank god they didnt pick him. That was the dumbest Fn thing I ever heard.

I think the only good Superman story worth telling on the big screen is Kingdom Come.

I liked Superman Returns as an Act I. And Act II would have to be more action-packed, bringing him to his lowest point. By more action-packed, I don't mean multiple villians and storylines.

You can't have a dark and brooding Superman-in-black reboot and still be true to the character. Kal-El's enduring hope and optimism is backbone of his strength right down to the primary colors he wears. He's not Blade or Batman. He's not about darkness.

Supes needs a reboot really bad! Mark millar deserves to work in the superman film. He could make it a real badass superman. Millar is the way to go, I mean c'mon, warner bros. is making movies of other superheroes no one wants to see! I could care less about watchmen. Its all about the main dc heroes like bats, flash, wonder woman, etc, I want to pay good money to see Excellent made movies...
Metron

I would say have Millar write one of the following,

Put Supes up against Brainiac -I think the most effective way for Brainiac is a hybrid between the Animated series version and the T-1000esque metal morphing brainiac of Smallville- and a comic-based downright evil scum of humanity Lex Luthor. (if they're going to do that then why not use Kevin Smith's Superman Lives script and get rid of all the Jon Peters' Bullshit he had put into the script....cough cough....GIANT SPIDER.....cough cough. And I know what you're thinking, don't judge Smitty based on his comedy history, it was a great read and I was very impressed. I highly recommend it and you can find it on Google)

OR...

Put him against Doomsday, and bring Supes back with the help of CADMUS and John Henry Irons, while Doomy automatically regenerates elsewhere.

If the evil greedy studios don't like either of those choices, then I present le creme de la creme....

Then put Supes against DARKSEID and SUPES LOSES!!! BIG TIME!!! ..."People of Earth, here is your Savior, Cowed and Broken..." then Supes meets Orion and the other New Gods and next time Superman goes up against Darkseid, Big Blue fights Darkseid to a standstill.

With either of those last two options, they-the studio- shows that Supes is not the demigod that everyone thinks he is.

In any of those choices show Superman's human side. Talk about how he is a God, but chooses to live among and as Men not unlike Jesus Christ. (Not being blasphemous just juxtaposing)

But what they really should do with Darkseid is bring in Jack Kirby's Fourth World. All of it. W/ Superman as a Supporting character. Turn that into a trilogy and at the end have it end they way Kirby wanted it to. Seriously, if they did it right they could knock the first Star Wars off its pedestal. (Sorry Kirby fan ranting here....My Bad.)

Miller write pure gold
but he seems to forget about things
like the comics he is incredibly late on
i want my Kick-Ass god dammit

i think there should definately be a reboot with an entirely new cast
and NO MORE LEX LUTHOR
there are a plethera of evil beings to choose from, why always the bald dude with no powers
or at least have him pulling the strings of someone like darksied or doomsday
dear god its superman, give him something real to hit
and please no date movie feel or i will throw up my lunch
and no superman baby
what were they thinking
only wonder women can handle superman
and make a truly Super Baby

ps: i hate superman as a character but if they are going to keep making movies make them good

i dont no y everyone is saying superman cant be dark. he is pushed to the edge by villians like darkseid and his last choice is to kill them.Butmhe fights his conscience and does the right thing. i thought brandon routh sucked as superman. WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK SUPER IS KINDA SKINNY!! i heard people want peter from heroes.STUPID IDEA. i like TOM WELLING, CHRIS PINE, JOSH DUHAMEL, OR MAYBE THOMAS JANE IF U WANT A OLDER MORE MATURE SUPERMAN!!! plz consider sumone built like Tom Welling. (it doesnt have to be him)

*sigh*

I guess once again the theory on reboots are the main purpose cause fans dont appreciate or just dont give a damn...I guess Superman needs a hole new recast?..Superman needs a villian stronger than he is? Superman needs to be darker?..Superman this! Superman that!..Lex Luthor isnt as good as the Joker!..blah, blah, etc...I think some fans that bashed Returns were extremely Marvel fans, or not will rounded comic book fans,..something?.. But this reboot shit needs too stop. Fantastic Four wasnt good enough just cause Doom in the first, and Galactus in the second....Hell, I guess Jessica, Ioan, Chris, and Michael were'nt good actors if thats even a piss poor complaint?....Didnt Superman face someone just as strong or stronger in his last movie(Meteor Man?) and that tanked...What do you think someone like Doomsday will bring..alot of CGI, poor fight scenes, unorganized plot, etc. probably yall bash that as well when it comes out!?...

IF YOU DO A REBOOT KEEP ROUTH OR USE TOM WELLING, WHAT "RETURNS" WAS LACKING, CLARK KENT WASNT OVERLY NERDY LIKE CHRISTOPHER REEVE DID IT, THE SUIT FOR SOME REASON BUGGED ME,..NERD IT UP, MAKE THE SUIT LOOK EVEN COOLER, MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE THE OLD TV SERIES FLASH COSTUME, ALL MUSCLED OUT, MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THE COMIC, TRY A NEW APPROACH, ITS OK TO BE NOSTALGIC,BUT GIVE PEOPLE THE SAME STEW AND WE GET BORED.

i am truly a marvel fan
but i stick by my reboot comment
if a comic book movie fails
they will not make a sequel
but if the character is strong
they will want to reuse the character
so we can either have a reboot
or nothing at all
because no studio/execs are going to make a sequel to Returns
its a simple fact

and lex has been used to death
not comparing him to anyone but simply stating the fact that why use him over, and over, and over

fantastic four wasnt good for many reasons that if you cant see then thats your issue
it was entertaining for sure
but for someone who has read the comic since i could start reading it was pretty dissapointing
but again, we can either have a reboot or nothing at all
so i will call for the reboot
becuase noone is going to make a third in that series
and i would love to see FF on the big screen as many times as I can

jimmy huynh you dont think Routh was big enough but you want Chris Pine??

Mark Miller is a great writer so if he was in charge of the proceedings then i would be fine with that..but i still think Singer would deliver the goods with a sequel. I really dont care who makes it, i just want to see a good movie. I liked Routh but if he cant return then maybe Jim Caviezil..i dunno, you all want Supes to be this huge collosus like he is in the comics but the fact is there are not many(any) huge, built but still have the right look for Supes AND can act worth a damn out there. Hell they could cast Nathan Jones with a hairpiece but its not going to work!

Hancock was what Superman should have been, the train scene in Hancock was amazing, I was so P.O.'d that It was someone other than Supes who got that wreck. Sham eon DC for making Superman a sissy. Go read "The Wierd" it's a four issue mini from '88, the one scene superman is lifting a colapsed building off of himself, that is Superman!!

I wasn't all too crazy about Routh, actually. I want Superman to look a little older, and he has to be bigger too. For me it doesnt matter who directs but if its singer he better not dish out another piece of shit like that last one. Not that it was wholly bad, it just didnt hold my interest, didnt entrance me to the edge of my seat. I was just like, eh.

Honoring past movies are great, because the old ones were good in their own way, but we need a superman for our generation. don't turn him badass or anything, that's just dumb, but at least use the action potential that comes with the Man of Steel! I wanna see Superman throw an enemy/ or be thrown into buildings, beating to a pulp, something with higher stakes. that's why i want a reboot, but a faithful reboot. I don't know who to want as villain, i feel that darkseid or doomsday may not work for the first movie. But i like the idea of a three part story, and i like the idea of millar writing it, he is faitful to the source and will only change minor things but which will make it way cool. Sigh, I don't know...
xmentheeight
xmentheeight - 3/24/2009, 8:42 AM
I think we are all in agreeance that we do not want to see Luthor...YET AGAIN!...but I dont want to see no damn mutiple villians just to try to invoke nerdgasms, if the story aint right and dont flow. Doomsday is not going 2 work, unless U let him kill Supes,..and the time alotted for most movies will not do that thing justice. I think.

Action pack does not equal dark. We have seen it in Iron Man and Hulk,...while these movies did have their darker and violent moments...the overall feel of the movie was not steeped in grit and they delivered the money shots when it counted.

I seem to notice someone saying that Routh's Kent was not nerdy enuff. Um,...good. While I loved Chris Reeve as Supes when I was a kid,...I hated his Kent. So let me see if I can get this,...the only way he can keep anyone from not thinking that he is Superman is to be a complete idiot? RRRRIIIGGGHHHTTT! That interpretation of Kent is not consistent with what we have seen in the animated versions as well as the books for the past 20+ years. While he is definitely not ubercool and such, he does come across as a competent and intelligent person that one can believe could hold a job at a top tier newspaper. I can do without the perpertual b!#%h a$$ness and 3 stooge act that everyone seems to gravitate to.

And finally for the ladies on here that constantly complain that Routh's muscles werent big enuff....get over it. Supes is not really a huge bulky figure. Yes we have some artists whose interpretations make him a bit bulkier and such, like Mike Turner(r.i.p) and others, but I have seen other portrayls like in the Superman and Legion of Superheroes story when they battle Earthman, where Supes had a simpler, yet muscler build. I think the movie will have 2 find a medium ground thats sensible and believable,....and for the record, especially if U watched the behind the scenes on Superman Returns...I dont know what U girls saw, but Routh is not a small kid. His Superman was a decent build and size, in my opinion.

haha, leave Supes alone! I MEAN IT! the line was used again by a droid in the 1st ep. of Star Wars Clone Wars with Yoda hehe.

Well, now seriously, NO REBOOT PLEASE! And keep Routh and Singer, he's proven he CAN deliver quality comic book characters to life. Just because Returns wasn't "perfect" to some people's standards, doesn't mean he isn't capable.
slimybug

I'm so, so sick of some of the attitudes going on twards this.

I'm sick of everyone thinking Millar's ideas sound so great, and of everyone bashing the most idiotic things to bash about Superman Returns. Honestly saying they kept "Superman in bed for the third act" is riduculous. It's called a falling act, and there was nothing wrong with it. The movieh ad it's beig climax, and that was the falling action.
People just look for random things to complain about in that movie. Get over it, for crying out loud?

Rebooting the franchise with a different actor is equally ridiculous. If you must ignore SR, at least use the same actors and sets and call it a prequel, or whatver. That way, everybody's happy!

And, for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would like Millar's approach. Showing Superman hundreds of years in the future, all alone on Earth? Who the hell want that kind of downer story in their Superman movie? Haven't we all been badmouthing WB for trying to say they want a darker Superman? That's ridiculous. Just have him saving folk in Metropolis, and beating the hell out of Brainiac.

If you didn't like SR for the lack of a physical villain, Brainiac would be GREAT in the new film. But for crying out loud, make it set in contemporary Metropolis. These new ideas of himbeing all alone on a desolate Earth are just stupid!
