InstigatorGIRL's Rant & Review of Smallville's Season 9 Finale

As yet another season ends, did it leave me excited for next season or make me ache for a gun barrel in my mouth. BIG SPOILERS.

Review Opinion

As many would know I like Smallville. I have been watching since the first season but to be completely honest the show has been a complete disappointment for the last few seasons. They have had a trend of hyping up the final episodes only to make the finales anti-climatic. An example everyone who watches will remember is, the we wish it never happened, Doomsday finale. FAIL.
I must say, though, that this seasons finale was extremely enjoyable to me. For once, in a long time, I didn't get up to find something to help me swallow the crap I just watched nor did I put on my Superman The Animated Series DVD to quench my need for a REAL Superman show. I was actually impressed. There were many parts in the show that stood out to me. I'll list my favorite things but I also had some dislikes.

****************SPOILERS******************

-Okay first thing I really loved was the flash forward to 2013. This opening scene was really a great nod to Superman fans, even though it is a Superman show. Here is where we see the future Lois Lane arguing with the her boss, oh yes the "Chief" himself, Perry White. Granted, we don't actually see Perry himself, only his name on the door, but still cool with me. Not to mention she is being followed by the true Jimmy Olsen, showing he is obviously her errand boy/camera man. During this scene Jimmy hands Lois a paper with the headline, "Lex Luthor announces his Presidency." (EPIC! At this moment I have to admit I had a huge grin on my face.) Then we hear the famous WHOOSH noise of Clark racing to the rescue to see his desk with the famous, yet absent, glasses left on his desk. Outside the window we see a plane about ready to crash into the Daily Planet only to see a red and blue blur fly and turn the plane away from the potential crash.

-Next thing I loved was Clark finally got the Red and Blue suit from Martha Kent. She left it in the Barn with a card reading, "In case you decide to stay." The reasoning behind this is if he uses this Kryptonian device called the "Book of Rao" it would apparently transport all Kryptonians to a new Krypton, including him. Anyways, as to whether or not he actually wears it is another thing and if he doesn't; I'll think it's total crap.

-I loved the interaction between Hawkman and Green Arrow. I have since "Absolute Justice."

-Okay I don't know why but I really don't like the pairing of Chloe and Oliver Queen. The scenes where he kisses her and then they yell they love each other over the radio just before his abduction just left a bad taste in my mouth.

*As a side note, who else figured out that they may actually be going with the whole Darkseid/Apokolips route? Last thing we hear from Oliver is, "Chloe, they're not Kandorians!" Anyone else think Parademons? (If that's wrong, my bad)

-My favorite scene has to be when Zod attacks Lois. Zod throws Lois and as she is flying through the air towards a telephone booth Clark comes racing to the rescue and before he saves Lois from crashing though the phone booth; he turns around and throws a massive punch at Zod that sends Zod flying through the air. Awesome scene. new slogan should be, "Wanna see a man fly? Mess with Lois Lane and you'll see it."

-The final fight was surprisingly, pretty awesome but all I could think was, "Where was this fighting during Doomsday??" Then I got even more irritated because that seemed to me that they were being lazy last season.

-One of my complaints was I wish we saw more of the League (I don't care what they say it's not the Justice League to me, only the League) and JSA in action. Then again, it is Smallville so it's my fault to have expected that and then be disappointed.

-Another complaint was I was hoping that, maybe, Rosenbaum would show up since they hinted that Lex is alive. Then again my fault.

-Major thing that bothered me is I wish Clark would just tell Lois already. I mean come on, she obviously knows now after he kissed her. So they better just let it go and let her know and no Kryptonian kiss or fingers crossed or whatever.

-Final scene was good but predictable. As soon as I saw that blue Kryptonite dagger I figured that's how it would end. Also I don't get it. Okay Blue Kryptonite removes their powers but not their Kryptonian DNA so why does that work in preventing Zod and Clark from going to New Krypton? That seemed confusing to me. Anyways...

My wishes for the next season are simple.

-If they do Darkseid; don't piss us off like they did with Doomsday by being lazy.

-Bring Rosenbaum back as Lex at some point. Even if it's for like 1-2 episodes.

-Clark needs to fly. It seems like every Kandorian and their mother can fly within seconds of getting their powers but Clark can't? That makes me more annoyed with Tom Welling because I am more convinced he is the one that doesn't want to do it.

-Leave Tess dead. Please!

-Bring back Kara. I think she would've been awesome in this season with the Kandorians but I will be happy with her return next season.

-Enough with Martha Kent as the "Red Queen." That's as stupid as Lana getting some power suit that absorbs Kryptonite and gives her powers...

-Also No Perry White and Martha Kent romance. Oops... excuse me... I just threw up a little. (Note: Annette and Michael are a GOOD couple in real life but the characters to me don't fit together...)

-I want the Question with Misha Collins playing him.

-Blue and Red Suit. No more black, matrix wardrobe.

-Do not bring in any more Kandorian/Kryptonian characters or storylines unless they are involving Powergirl, Supergirl, or Connor Kent.

Anyways This finale was actually very entertaining and I say if you're a fan and you missed it, find a way to watch it. Definately worth the buy on iTunes. I think this was my favorite episode, with the exception of the 2 hour episode, of the last 4 seasons.

@hawk Yeah what do you make of the old woman? Were you thinking Granny Goodness like I was? I was thinking maybe that I was reaching there.

That epic punch to Zod reminded me of Linkara's review:

ill admit i thought granny goodness too for the old woman. especially as i remembered that when she originally was one of darkseids hounds. she had a dog who she trained which was called Mercy the same name as tess's nickname. also another far reach which i dont think it will be was maybe it was omac's. ollie said that they had put a satellite up just for watchtower and its convenient they all converged on him just seconds after he got it activated. also the watchtower symbol is i think a little similar to the omac eye. far reaching i know

Great review IGIRL! I havent watched the show in a while (because I've grown to hate it) but why bother when Supernatural is so much better! ;)

I just took a look at the 2013 bit on YouTube...it's pretty cool but it just came across as a cheap way to keep fans watching while none of that stuff continues to actually happen in the show!

I have stuck with this show from the start. You are absolutely right....the Doomsday fight was a major letdown. I did enjoy this season more. Who was that masked, knitting Granny ?

InstigatorGIRL: great Review!

I liked this episode, however i felt they once again held back! the clark v zod fight could of gone on longer! and i think a lot of people thought with the JSA members coming back for this episode, u would see more of them interacting, like fighting the Kryptonians or someone! but no!

I expected more! i feel they short changed us once again!

I just have to except this is one messed up superman origin, if u could call it that!

I'm with you instigatorgirl@, this was finally
a mostly satisfying finale with plenty of good
cliffhangers for next season! Good R & R
instigirl@!

The writing on Smallville has improved immensely
this year, almost as if it was a totally new
writing crew! Strange!

That Kryptonian haymaker Clark put on ZOD was
awesomeness to the nth degree! All I got to say
is don't mess with Lois when Clark is around! lol
He literally sent ol' ZOD into orbit! lmao
Now where was that kind of thing for DOOMSDAY?

I'm also thinking the ol' woman is Granny Goodness
and the non-Kryptonian things trying to smash and
bash Olly are Parademons!

Leee@ it looks like we're getting DARKSEID whether
we want him or not! I for one say leave him for the movies!

And please, oh, please, LEAVE TESS TERMINATED!!!

greenlanternsector2814 - 5/15/2010, 8:41 AM
@ Instigatorgirl - Parademons was my first thought too when Oliver was attacked. Plus, when Tess died (hopefully), my first thought with the old lady was that old woman was their version of Granny Goodness Yes? Doomsday seems like the obvious choice. Its who I always thought superman should fight in one of the movies anyway. I actually enjoyed the finale as well.

I think Darkseid will be in the last season. I imagine Oliver is going to wake up on Apokalips and maybe Tess to because odds are the old lady is Granny Goodness.
elcaballerooscuro92
elcaballerooscuro92 - 5/15/2010, 9:13 AM
yes bring connor kent! and i thougth those things that attacked oliver were OMAC'S but i know that i was wrong
DDD
DDD - 5/15/2010, 9:21 AM
Superman4@ you're probably right!
Tess & Ollie will probably show back up
on APOKALIPS.
But I wish Tess would stay permanently
gone! Oh. well!

They need to spin this series after season-10
into a JLA TV series with Supes wearing
the blue and red and flying and Olly
and the bunch fighting super bad guys
all around the world and not in just
Metropolis! A young JLA! Now I'd buy that
fer a dollar! ;D
lol

@Instigatorgirl

Good Review, your absolutely right about this, and that "I love you" between GA and Chloe WTF!?!?!
wherer is black canary when we need her!?!

And that whole bringing back the JSA and the League kinda had me upset. I wanted a epic fight (yes i know, in Smallville?!?) between the Kandorians and "The League". I didn't see the whole blue kryptonite thing coming honestly.. I wasn't disappointed with the last fight though. Considering their was no Superpowers involve it was still nice..
I knew it was Tess that was gonna die, from the first day that they announced someone would die. Im glad they did it, but who will replace her?!?! she was the replacement for Lex in season 8 soo who will be her replacement?
billnye69
billnye69 - 5/15/2010, 9:38 AM
Did anyone else think that it was the Green Lanterns that "attack" or "approached" Oliver. That was my first thought when he said they weren't Kandorians and then we seen Ryan Reynolds as one of the Kandorians that showed up for the final battle. I'm really hoping it was the Lanterns. ^_^

Oh and about season 10.

Sry @LEE but bring in Darkseid! as long as its not terrible like Doomsday (Whom should have never been brought into the series!!!) BUT I think he should only be in a 2 hr or two 2 hour , two part, season/series finale (Total 4 hours if that was confusing at all lol) which can be good.. And if he doesn't wear the suit in the season, then damnit give him the suit for the fight with Darkseid which better BE EPIC!!!

and Hawkman is probably gonna save clark.. just saying

IGIRL- LOL I'm sure you are waiting for me to comment
so I must put my 2 cents in here.

1. The opening scene was AWESOME! I agree with everything
you said about the opening.

2. Hawkman and Green Arrows banter..priceless. LOL

3. "they are not Kandorians!"... I have NO idea who
"they" could be..I really hope they DO NOT go the
DARSEID route..I hoped they learned there lesson
after the failed DOOMSDAY fiasco!

but I do hope they go the Thanagarians route!

4. YEA I was relly hoping for the return of LEX also
but hey..thats what the 10th season is for!

and finally

5. The LAST fight..I LOVED IT. and I am
glad they went the "NO POWERS" route with
blue kryptonite or else we would of got a
crappy fight like they did with doomsday.

ZOD is finally gone! I know you liked him,
and I liked his acting..But since when did zod have a british accent? anyway, the very final scene
when clark is falling of the bulding
he gives Zod a LOOK, that right there
tells me he will fly next season.
But that's just me..

One more thing...LEX MUST BE BACK NEXT SEASON!!

I know alot of people thought the
ZOD vs CLARK fight could of gone on longer,
but WHY?..These finale episode are
REALLY 2 parts..The Season finale
and the season premire(season 10).

I think the Zod vs Clark fight was actually
a great way to END the first part of the finale.
and the cliffhanger was great it
left me saying "AWWW COME ON!
I GOTTA WAIT 4 MONTHS"

I must say GREAT REVIEW!!

Also did you notice they killed of TESS..
WHO will run LEXCORP now??..LOL.. LEX OF COURSE!!

"they are not Kandorians".... is Checkmate completely out of the picture now? Wouldn't they have a problem with the private satellite designed for Watchtower surveillance? I'm just hoping they don't even Try to pull off a Darkseid invasion. I hope they learned something from the Doomsday fiasco.

Great review! I thought by the title that you were gonna rip it to shreds and was wondering why!

-I'm convinced that was Granny Goodness
-That punch was EPIC
-Loved that Lois knew it was Clark after the kiss...the look on her face was priceless
-Final fight was awesome (Stupid Zod forgot about "Super-hearing")
-Hawkman GA banter was awesome!

Did you pause it during the FlashForward? You can see Superman under the plane pretty clearly!

I'll try to find a screenshot later!

If you haven't seen it....check it out, AWESOME EPISODE!

I don't think they should do Darkseid next season. It's just more than they can handle and they will never do it justice. Maybe they can do the Thanagarians. Or how about Mongul?

Hawksblueyes - 5/15/2010, 10:34 AM
IGIRL: Well done article, I loved it.

I would love to see Darseid in the show but I just can't imagine Darkseid and The New Gods being covert or secret enough to draw the story out for an entire season. The New Gods would just attack and it would be on, they wouldn't infiltrate.
BruceWayneNewton

good episode but as usual Smallville is much better at teasing action and story than actualy delivering on it. This show could be sooo good but they just won't let it be. Still really looking forward to next season. it was def Granny Goodness and darkseid is coming.

For a Justice League spin-off after
Smallville season 10 they could also
bring Hawkman into the JL after he
rescues Clark.

Then the line-up would be:
Superman, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter,
Black Canary, Green Arrow, Zatanna,
Impulse (Flash), Aquaman and Hawkman,
the other old guy along with MM to help
the young-uns to develop.

Now I truly would watch that spin-off
religiously! ;D ;D ;D
DDD
DDD - 5/15/2010, 10:56 AM
BTW, I personally would love it if they brought
Hawkman in as a regular next season after he
rescues Clark! I kinda like Michael Shanks as
Hawkman although I could do without the weird
voice and the costume needs to be a little less
cheesy!

Okay big time Smallville Fan here, but like most of us I have been disappointed by the last several seasons.

May I suggest the one man who can be both hero and nemisis to Clark Kent/Blur/SuperMan...Bruce "Not Batman yet" Wayne. He becomes part owner of Lexcorp. He too can be obsessed but he will be obsessed with using these powers to gain revenge for his dead parents.

Also scrap the Darkseid plans, we already know that it will be campy looking so to avoid further disappointment go with something else. More Metallo(minus the feel good heart felt behavior), Myxlplyx, Conduit, and the Eradicator.

I also think they need to get rid of other heroes that take away from the actual point of the show and add meaningless storylines.Green Arrow should never have become a full time cast member!

Igirl very well done. I have seen every episode of Smallville and i was not let down at all with this season finale. I got goose bumps almost throughout the whole episode. (I am a nerd like that)LOL This season has been a great year sure some bumps in the road but over all it has been a fun ride. I hope they keep going with the story line of bringing the gang together. I thought the writers really stepped it up for this episode. Very happy how it ended, till next season!!!

BTW weneedrevelation i find your comment very offensive. Please next time be a little more adult with your words. If you hate the episode and Smallville, well just say you hate it.
