Superman: A Part of Our Heritage

Superman: A Part of Our Heritage

Among a series of Canada: Our Heritage one minute video tributes that aired on Canadian television was this one devoted to the creation of Superman, which, as Superman Homepage notes, serves as reminder that Siegel and Shuster "are not just two boys from Cleveland but are Canadian boys as well."

Jazzman is on the money! Man, i remember that comercial playing on tv all the time when i was kid. It was cool the couple first times but after having seen it everyday for the longest time, it got annoying LOL. But it was cool for what it was. Yeay Canada :)

I live in Canada, and I've never understood why Canadians love to take credit for idiotic stuff. Not that Superman is idiotic. But if Shuster was in any way patriotic, Superman wouldn't be fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. In other words, they create a heritage commercial about how Canadians should be so proud of having a hand in creating essentially, an American hero. Idiotic.

They understood that you have to appeal to americans. There's more of them and they spend money. Plus super villains in Canada? gimme a break. Wolverine is our pride and joy when it comes to comics though

@Leee: I have to say, that's the first photomanip you've EVER put up of ANYONE that remotely looks like Superman. Kudos.

Seriously though, compare that to a Routh photo - Routh looks NOTHING like the Man of Steel, so when you say "Routhy worthy" it can only mean "worthy of crapness" :)

Actually, the 'Truth, Justice, and The American Way' phrase was added later on during the radio show broadcasts. Siegel and Shuster weren't involved in that. Probably added just because it sounded dramatic. Even Metropolis was based on Toronto. I'm Canadian too and I've seen this commercial so many times. Awesome!

As Jazzman said. Siegel was born in America...Cleveland to be exact. Shuster was born in Canada. They both weren't Canadian boys.

Lee@ The more you post those photos of Cavill as Superman, the more it shows people he doesn't look like Superman. That's about as fruity looking of a Superman manip that I have seen. ;-) Routh can't act, so being Routh worthy isn't much of an endorsement. From everything I have been hearing, Routh and Cavill aren't in the running this time around. Please let that be true!

Only Joe Shuster is from Canada, Jerry Siegel is from Cleveland. Technically only the artist is Canadian, so this part "are not just two boys from Cleveland but are Canadian boys as well." isn't really right.

I loved these series of commercials, especially this one. They really need to do more of them.

Great article Ed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't quite get the hype of the clips. Shuster moved to Cleveland when he was 10 and Superman wasn't even created then. The heritage of Superman started in Cleveland and was Siegel's idea. Shuster did the illustrations like he did for most of Siegel's ideas throughout high school and after. Siegel approached him with his idea and character and asked him to illustrate him. His contributions are very important, but it's not like Superman's "heritage" started in Canada. That is far from reality. Heritage is a property or inheritance that is passed down from one ancestor to another. Considering Shuster's father or ancestors had nothing to do with the creation of Superman, I don't get the use of the term "heritage" in relation to Canada.

Ah, seeing this clip brings back memories of my youth. I loved it when I first saw this Canadian Heritage moment; it was one of the reasons why I'm such a Superman fan today. The co-creator of my favourite superhero of all time (Canadian hero Wolverine being a close second :D) was not only Canadian, but born in the city I call home, Toronto Ontario. In fact, Shuster originally modeled the city of Metropolis (the home of Superman) after the city of Toronto. In the first issues of Action comics, Clark Kent worked at The Daily Star (later renamed The Daily Planet), which was named after The Toronto Daily Star, which Shuster worked for as a newspaper boy.

Without him, there would be no Superman or Superheroes for that matter. It was because of him the Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association instituted the Joe Shuster Awards, for outstanding achievements in the creation of comic books, graphic novels and webcomics by Canadians.

There are a few names that pop into my head when someone says the words "Comic book Gods". Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, but the biggest names of all would be Jerome "Jerry" Siegel & Joseph "Joe" Shuster.

This man is one of the many reasons why I’m proud to call myself Canadian.

Oh, and for those of you who didn't do the proper research and/or rolled their eyes at this, you can SUCK MY...

Well said. We Canadians (I'm from PEI) need to be proud of our fellow Canadian's contributions to the comic book industry.

I really think Canadians should be proud of Joe Shuster, I would be. It's just this article said "Canadian boys" plural, when in reality one is Canadian and one is American.

...I'm surprised that even one of them was Canadian at all. I was more wowed when I found out that both of them were Jewish.

@Gearstation- Thanks! I have family in PEI. I've never been there, but I hear it is beautiful. Peace to ya, brother! ;)
@Shaman & Eviltwin- I knew there were other reasons why I liked you guys (besides the great avatars that is). :) Where do you two hail from?
@patriautism- I understand. I noticed that too. Joe was a Canadian who lived in America, Jerry was an American of Jewish decent. In fact, Jerry & Joe based many of Superman's abilities (strength and invulnerability to be specific) on an old Hebrew legend called the Golem, an animated anthropomorphic being created of earth or clay. A little history for you all.
@EdGross- Nice job man. Keep it up.
