Composer John Williams Walks Back Retirement Comments As Speculation Mounts He'll Work On SUPERMAN: LEGACY

Legendary Star Wars and Indiana Jones composer John Williams has walked back his past comments about retiring, prompting speculation to run rampant that James Gunn has enlisted him for Superman: Legacy.

The legendary John Williams is now 91 and has had a storied career which includes composing themes and scores for franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Superman: The Movie

His career has spanned a whopping seven decades and it was in 2022 that Williams strongly hinted he would retire following the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. That movie ended up being something of a critical and commercial disappointment, perhaps explaining why the composer is now mulling over a comeback.

In an interview with The Times, Williams withdrew his comments about retiring by saying "everything is possible" when it comes to his future plans.

"I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors," he explained. "If I made one without putting it in context then I withdraw it. If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out."

"Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back," Williams added. "Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind."

He's clearly not making any firm commitments here but speculation among fans is already running rampant. There's chatter online that Williams could be tempted back to compose a score for the upcoming Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley's Rey, while many believe he could create a new theme for Max's upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

Then, there's Superman: Legacy. While absolutely nothing is confirmed, it's worth pointing out that filmmaker James Gunn has confirmed a composer has already created the Man of Steel's new theme, and who better to enlist than the man who dreamed up Superman: The Movie's unforgettable theme?

"The costume is mostly done but we’re still going back and forth on some elements," Gunn said last year. "A lot of the score - maybe even most of the major themes - have already been written."

Asked why he hadn't announced the reboot's composer, he added: "I have to check...And yes I know that sounds crazy since so much of the score has been written, but when you’re riding the waves of inspiration, what are you going to do? I wrote most of Peacemaker and all of Creature Commandos before I had a closed deal!"

We'll see what happens, but the simple fact Williams is no longer retiring is definitely cause for celebration!

This isn't even a rumor, this clown is now making things up. He won't do another superhero movie ever. This year is full of rumors lol

Spielberg when Williams said he wanted to retire

He also realized Dial of Destiny would be his last score

Making another Superman score would be a huge mistake imo, for both Williams and Gunn.

I thought using the Superman and Batman classic music in the Whedon cut for the Justice League was a terrible idea too.

@SethBullock - So, no new music anf no old music?

Something in between?

@OptimusCrime - I think Gunn should just look for a new composer that makes all new music instead of rehashing any music from the previous Superman movies, or instead of using the same composers that worked in the previous movies, specially Williams that I doubt that could make sonething better than what he did like 45 years ago or something that sounds different enough to avoid comparisons.

One of the best things in MoS was its music, probably not as memorable as the Williams score but it was pretty good and it was something new that didn't try to imitate Williams' sound.

And Snyder's Cut was much better than Whedon's because of, among other things, the music.

And I love Elfman, Williams and even Whedon's work, but that Frankenstein movie was a disaster.

And trying to mix again new things with stuff from the past is just a mistake imo, full reboot and zero connections to any past DC movies or tv shows, including the good ones, that should be the new DCU.

@SethBullock - Sadly, I have to agree with you. Dude's had an EPIC career and, that list of films alone, Williams is done. Not that he's not capable. But, you really want a 91-year-old composing for the new, younger Superman film?

If I had to pick? I love John Ottman. He did several of the x-men early films, but (he's had tons of other gigs) his score for Halloween H2O, despite what you think of that film, is amazing. Ottman took the Halloween score for the intro and turned it into a beautiful orchestral version, seamlessly incorporated the original score intertwined with his original music, and slyly put a little bit of PSYCHO score when Janet Leigh was walking away from a conversation with 'Miss Tate."
Obviously, I'm all in on this dude and think he'd nail it.

They said he would retire after Rise Of Skywalker.
Then they said he would after The Fabelmans.
Then that he would after Dial Of Destiny.
Now they're saying this...

One one hand, the man needs his rest at that age. He's lived an accomplished life and has left a tremendous impact on the industry with his craft. On the other hand, if he's the one expressing genuine interest, then more power to him.

@DrReedRichards - Thing is at that age when they stop doing stuff, they start going downhill health wise. It is better for 90 somethings to continue to do what they’re passionate in until they no longer want to. If he wants to keep working and he has no major health issues other than age setting him back, let the man cook.

@kg8817 -

Absolutely. That's why I added in hindsight that last part about him expressing genuine interest. I mean, it's one thing for him to actively want to do it, and it would be another if he was being bargained or negotiated with for something that he might not be as passionate about as he used to be.

But yeah, if that's what the man himself wants, who are we to say anything.

@DrReedRichards - some people say they want to retire til they actually do. Then they find boredom in it. Maybe he felt boredom in retirement

Remember when Marylin Manson did the score for Resident Evil. That was dope. Or he was like Co-scorer or something like that.

I didn't think that was dopey. I thought that score was really good.

@HammerLegFoot - Trent Reznor should score this movie.

He won an oscar for a Disney score, for a facebook movie's score, and just composed the music for a TMNT animated movie, so why not Superman, lol.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 1/2/2024, 11:15 AM
@HammerLegFoot - I'm pretty sure, despite the bone-headed mistakes DC/WB has committed over the past 13 or so years, that having Marylin Manson do the soundtrack/score for Superman will not EVER happen on this or any other planet. Aw hell no.

lazlodaytona - 1/2/2024, 11:17 AM
@SethBullock - Reznor is a legend and very good at the composing he does for film. That said? He ain't right for Superman. Maybe in Zach Snyder's Superman world. But, not in this new one.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 1/2/2024, 11:19 AM
@DocSpock - he said it was dope. Which is slang for meaning "great" or "amazing". Its like someone saying that score is "the bees knees"

My mistake. I didn't know that adult people still said such a goofy thing.

@lazlodaytona - You are probably right, but I was just playing with the Reznor-Manson connection, and he would absolutely be a better option than Manson, specially these days, lol.

He has also made some stuff I never thought he would make, so who knows, maybe someday he could score a superhero movie.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 1/3/2024, 10:13 AM
@SethBullock - I get what you're saying. I think Reznor is amazing and would be better for a darker supe: Spectre, Ghost Rider, or even Spawn.

@MotherGooseUPus - John Williams is a legend and you can always tell when you're listening to soundtrack stations when one of his pieces comes up. His string and wind instrument swells are iconic.
