David Corenswet's Trainer For SUPERMAN Reveals The Training Regiment That Turned Him Into The MAN OF STEEL

The 6'6" David Corenswet has reportedly packed on 40 lbs. of muscle to play the Last Son of Krypton in James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot.

In a new interview with GQ, celebrity trainer Paolo Mascitti is revealing the tips and tricks he used to turn the lean David Corenswet into a jacked, powerhouse ahead of filming on the DCU's Superman.

Said Mascitti, "This is a James Gunn film, and he has a specific vision of the entire project. David had been working out intensively before I met him, but he’s naturally a very lean guy. He’s 6’6” but we wanted to put more bulk on him. He probably went from 200lbs to 240lbs, but some of that mass will be shed as he continues to tone up.

He revealed that he and Corenswet had very intense training sessions for about 5 months before filming started on Superman. However, even though the cameras are now rolling, they're still training.

"He’s very busy right now so we’re only fitting in three or four sessions a week, but he’s still working out for two hours a day...He is Superman. James Gunn is amazing at casting people, and this guy was born to be Superman. Ask any cast or crew member, David is the nicest guy, and I think, the perfect Superman.”

The interview eventually took a more humorous turn as Mascitti revealed that Corenswet's "kryptonite" during training was cereal.

"Half of his training had to be done over FaceTime and half in person as he wasn’t in Los Angeles all the time. We’d speak remotely and I’d ask him about his diet and he’d be eating cereal! He’d ask What’s wrong with cereal!? But that’s why he’s the perfect Superman, he has a realistic expectation of himself and the role."

In terms of how they added on size for Corenswet, Mascitti stated that David's training started with a caloric surplus and big, traditional compound movements.

They started with 4 sets of 10 reps, upping the weight with each subsequent set. An example workout would be:

  • Incline Dumbell Press
  • Bench press / cable fly superset
  • Seated overhead shoulder press / front raise superset
  • Reverse triceps extension / bicep curl superset
  • Squats
  • Reverse to forward lunge superset with kettlebell
  • Leg raises
  • CrossFit sit-ups
  • Incline treadmill run

As mentioned above, perform 4 sets of 10 reps for each exercise, progressively overloading each set.

Earlier this week, James Gunn, DC Comics, and Warner Bros. unleashed the first official image of the Superman suit, likely due to the fact that filming is set to leave the tightly-guarded confines of the Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia and film on-location in Macon.

In addition to the on-location filming in Macon, Georgia, the cast and crew will also be traveling to Ohio soon, where they'll likely shoot at a site that could potentially be used for the Hall of Justice.

It was also recently revealed that Gun will be pulling double-duty over the next few months, as he'll also be helming a few episodes of Peacemaker season 2, which is also filming at Trillith.

The James Gunn-directed (and written) film stars David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Rounding out the cast are Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Additionally, Nicholas Hoult has been confirmed by Gunn to portray Lex Luthor in the film. Milly Alcock was also recently cast as Supergirl and is also expected (but unconfirmed) to appear, as well.

More recently Pruitt Taylor Vince was cast as Jonathan 'Pa' Kent, while Neva Howell signed on to play Martha 'Ma' Kent.

Currently set for release on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy Superman is the first film in Gunn's reboot of the DCEU.

I've always been about calorie deficits. Being a runner I prefer to be lighter. But I'm a former wrestler and built like a chimp. I gain muscle (and fat, if I let it) easily. Mesomorph I think they describe it as?!?!

But lately I've enjoyed gains from simple 'ol planet fitness. Reading this kinda makes me want to bulk up. But not really lol

@Vigor - just juice on what he juiced and it's alright

@Vigor - I gained muscle in a calorie deficit rather recently really well. Eating less was hard at times but weirdly what helped was snacking purely on fruit in between meals; mainly blueberries and raspberries to feel full. Low cal and high fiber to make me feel full.

@GhostDog - absolutely 💯
Fiber does it

I did a trail race half marathon recently. And in the swag bag was a full bag of kachava. That stuff runs for 70 dollars a bag. Well now after trying it I'm hooked. It's protein but also pretty much a superfood. So I skip a meal and just have that and I'm full until the next meal

But fruit was my secret weapon before I started doing protein shakes

@Vigor - I gotta get some of this kachava. Sounds like a nice protein meal replacement

*regimen, not regiment.

But also, yeah, if my job was to work out every day, and I could afford a personal chef to cook every meal, I'd imagine I could get in pretty good shape. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@clintthahamster - I like to think I'm good vocabulary wise. But I didn't know those were 2 different words haha. Thanks

@clintthahamster - Both words work.

Regiment: organize according to a strict, sometimes oppressive system or pattern.
"every aspect of their life is strictly regimented"

Be sure, if you’re going to be “that guy.”

@MarkJulian - "Regiment: organize according to a strict, sometimes oppressive system or pattern."

Regiment in that usage is a verb, not a noun. You could say "regimented training" or "training regimen," but "training regiment" in this instance would only make sense if there were a permanent unit of an army that was involved in his training, which doesn't seem to be the case.

Be sure, if you're going to accuse someone of being "that guy."

I still say my dude isn't big enough to be portraying superman yet. Needs another 20 lbs of solid muscle mass all around.

I do almost nothing but body weight outside of legs, which I only use a 120 sand bag for, and I look leaner and bigger than the guy with a Hollywood dietician and trainer. Not impressed.

@dragon316 - You work your abs with darn near every other exercise. You do not need to spend extra dedicated time on them.

Pretty standard bodybuilding plan for a chest/shoulders and quad day for the most part. Although that's way too much emphasis on the front delts. If you're doing incline bench, there's no need for isolation movements (overhead shoulder press and raises are mostly all front delts). Also pyramiding up in weight per set is mostly a waste of time. Your first three sets are basically warm-ups at that point and you're really only doing one working set. Just go up in weight every week instead of every set per session on that muscle. But then again, dude's taking Hollywood PEDs, so anything you do will show massive and quick progress. But naturals reading these Hollywood training regimens should get your advice and plans somewhere else.

Now be brave and post his cycle, you cowards.
