SUPERMAN: LEGACY Adds X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Star Nicholas Hoult As The Villainous Lex Luthor

SUPERMAN: LEGACY Adds X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Star Nicholas Hoult As The Villainous Lex Luthor

Rumor has it he was among the actors who auditioned for the role of Kal-El himself, but it's now being reported that X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult is going from playing Marvel's Beast to the DCU's Lex Luthor.

We'd expected this might happen, but Deadline is today reporting that James Gunn has found Superman: Legacy's Lex Luthor in British actor Nicholas Hoult. The Hollywood Reporter says no deal is done just yet, so an official announcement from the DC Studios co-CEO isn't necessarily imminent. However, it's looking good.

While he's thought to have been among the actors who auditioned to play the Man of Steel (after previously missing out on getting to play The Batman's Dark Knight for filmmaker Matt Reeves), Gunn must have seen something a little more villainous in the X-Men: First Class star.

No stranger to comic book adaptations after starring in that, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix, Hoult's other credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Menu, and The Great

We never did get a definitive list of Lex Luthor candidates for Superman: Legacy, though Hoult's name previously came up alongside Alexander Skarsgård and Bill Skarsgård. Daniel Craig's name also did the rounds at one point.

Now, he follows in the footsteps of actors such as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg on the big screen and the likes Michael Rosenbaum, Jon Cryer, and Michael Cudlitz on television.

Very little is known about what role Luthor will play here, though Brainiac is rumoured to be the reboot's big bad. If that's correct, then the sinister android could be next on Gunn's list to cast. Still, even if this is a supporting role, we're sure Hoult will have a big role to play in the DCU moving forward.

Of course, the biggest question is this: will Hoult's Lex have hair or be bald when we meet him? That, dear reader, remains to be seen!

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

There are still thought to be at least a few more roles which need to be filled, with Skyler Gisondo rumoured to be playing Jimmy Olsen. It's also been reported that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell may be in the running for Jor-El (there's no word on Ma and Pa Kent and whether they're alive in this iteration of Clark Kent's story).

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Loses out on both Batman and Superman only to become the villain lmao, something poetic in that. He’s more suited to Lex anyway, hell yes to this
TheNewYorker - 11/20/2023, 6:34 PM
@Cap1 - I can’t see him as a leading man.
Cap1 - 11/20/2023, 6:36 PM
@TheNewYorker - I can, just not as either Batman or Superman
BraxtonHicks - 11/20/2023, 8:10 PM
@Cap1 - he lived long enough to become the villain...
KennKathleen - 11/20/2023, 9:30 PM

@Cap1 - Agree...this is a really ....really good casting. The whole cast so far on paper is very good and fits.
thereeljoefish - 11/20/2023, 6:27 PM
Dope, this guy has range. Glad to hear it.
MCUKnight11 - 11/20/2023, 6:27 PM

I always thought he was the best choice of all the rumored names.
NoobMaster69ing - 11/20/2023, 6:27 PM
First Jon Arbuckle now Lex Luthor.

Today is a good day.
cyclopsprime - 11/20/2023, 6:30 PM
@NoobMaster69ing - Nicholas Hoult is voicing jon?
NoobMaster69ing - 11/20/2023, 9:20 PM
@cyclopsprime - Yes in the Garfield Animated movie
DannRamm113 - 11/20/2023, 6:28 PM

@DannRamm113 -

This deserves more likes.

I hope Hoult can take Lex to a new level just like Ledger did to Joker. Because outside of Clancy Brown or Michael Rosenbaum, I still don't think we have a definitive Lex.

RolandD - 11/20/2023, 6:40 PM
@MCUKnight11 - Gene Hackman was wasted in the role. He can play evil very well, but his Lex Luthor was far too comedic for my tastes.
MCUKnight11 - 11/20/2023, 6:47 PM
@RolandD - Also wouldn't let go of his real-estate scheme.
John75 - 11/20/2023, 6:55 PM
@MCUKnight11 - while killing the entire population of the West Coast. More people than the Joker ever would. Hell, more people than Hitler and Stalin put together
DTor91 - 11/20/2023, 7:12 PM
@RolandD - Accurate to the times though.

I just want to see that Clancy Brown type Lex brought to life.
EmilioLargo - 11/20/2023, 7:23 PM
@MCUKnight11 - i actually *really* liked Jon Cryer in the role (very unexpectedly, i must add).
RolandD - 11/20/2023, 8:45 PM
@MCUKnight11 - Yep. Even as a young teenager when I first saw those movies I was disappointed with how goofy his Luthor was. It’s just the way the character was written, and it was directed.
RolandD - 11/20/2023, 8:46 PM
@DTor91 - It wasn’t accurate to how Lex Luthor was in the comics at the time though. He was full on evil and not played for laughs. They probably didn’t want to make it too dark for the kids.
RolandD - 11/20/2023, 8:47 PM
@DTor91 - Like you, I hope that’s how they go with it this time.
MCUKnight11 - 11/20/2023, 8:49 PM
@EmilioLargo - For all its faults, the CW did have genuinely good versions of Luthor. Rosenbaum, Cryer and Cudlitz were all good as Lex.
Iports - 11/20/2023, 6:30 PM
Awsome choice from gunn

He will nail it
FireandBlood - 11/20/2023, 6:31 PM
Can’t fault this casting. Let’s just hope the writing gives him something to work with.
MCUKnight11 - 11/20/2023, 6:31 PM
I cannot believe this is the CBM where all of my dream castings are coming true. Corenswet as Superman, Brosnahan as Lois, and now Hoult as Lex. Makes me wonder who could be next? Christopher walken as Brainiac?
dracula - 11/20/2023, 7:17 PM
@MCUKnight11 -wasnt walken, Tim Burton’s pick for brainiac
bobevanz - 11/20/2023, 6:32 PM
I'm fine with this, and also the source being a real company and not a Twitter bot
vectorsigma - 11/20/2023, 6:42 PM
@bobevanz - yeah, i miss the days when articles came from official sources always
TheNewYorker - 11/20/2023, 6:33 PM
Cool, I guess.
Highflyer - 11/20/2023, 6:33 PM
I'm going to assume he has a cameo because this film seems to have A LOT.
MCUKnight11 - 11/20/2023, 6:33 PM
Speaking of DC villains, I hope the next casting that happens will be Josh hartnett as Harvey Dent in the Batman part 2.
tmp3 - 11/20/2023, 6:42 PM
@MCUKnight11 - NEED Hartnett to get more big roles after Oppy
Tufasrox - 11/20/2023, 6:42 PM
@MCUKnight11 - MY MAN!!!!!
