With work progressing on James Gunn's Superman: Legacy, fans remain eager for more information about the movie which will launch DC Studios' new DCU.

Luckily, James Gunn continues to share updates with fans across his various social media channels. The latest update pertains to the Man of Tomorrow's age, a widely discussed topic since it was misreported that the filmmaker was looking to cast someone around the age of 25.

Actor David Corenswet is 31 tomorrow and, based on Gunn's comments below, Superman will be whatever age the movie's lead star is when they're shooting. That makes sense (we doubt the reboot will get too specific) but this is interesting on a couple of different levels.

Despite Gunn wanting a more youthful Clark Kent for the DCU, Corenswet will be two years older than Cavill was when he shot Man of Steel by the time Superman: Legacy begins filming. The actor is also only 9 years younger than his predecessor, though Gunn has been pretty insistent that he wanted someone under 40.

In other news, the filmmaker has also told fans songs like David Bowie's "Starman," "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down, "Superman" by Taylor Swift, "Superman" by Goldfinger, "Superman" by Eminem, and "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan will not be in the movie.

It seems they're all a bit on the nose for Gunn's liking and, in the case of "Starman," he told one fan that the fact it's so closely associated with the hero is, "One of the reasons I wouldn't use it (after being asked hundreds of times to use it for the past ten years in Guardians)."

"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

We don’t need Awesome Mix. Vol 4 for Superman, ty

Give us a memorably epic score or [frick] off home

@PlusUltra - I do want the main theme to be the John Williams score tho. Would cleanse the pallet nicely after years of depressed Supes

@Nightwing1015 - Knowing how big a fan Gunn is of the original Donner film, I think the theme will be used in some capacity. It won't be part of the main score, but it'll be there when the time calls for it.

@Nightwing1015 -

Nope. We don’t need to go backwards. The best part of MOS was Zimmers theme which was exceptional. We need a NEW epic score which takes inspiration from the Donner score.

Nightwing1015 - 7/9/2023, 12:24 AM
@HulkisHoly - zimmers score was good but it’s not iconic like Williams. Few characters have an iconic and perfect score that’s associated with them like that - it’s dumb not to use it

@Nightwing1015 -

The problem with returns was that it went “back to the well” to capitalize on previous films’ success and that’s not what the DCU needs to do. It needs to carve its own “good” path inspired heavily by its source material. It’s source material should be the comics, not the Donner films. They were inspired by the comics themselves and good. Superman Legacy doesn’t need to be a copy of a copy, it needs to be a fresh take that’s heavily grounded in its source material in ways that maybe even the Donner films lacked in.

So no, it’s cheap to just use scores from previous iterations to get some nostalgia bait from.

It’ll feel no different from when the Flash used Danny Elf man’s theme (which was also very iconic). But I mean, what about his Spider-Man theme? That was also super iconic, but you can’t tell me that you wanted to see Holland swinging to the theme from the Raimi films. I think the score in the Raimi films is LEAGUES better than what Giaccino did for the MCU Spider-Man but I still wouldn’t use Elfman’s because that’s a different Spider-Man.

And THIS is not Reeves, it’s a different Superman.

@HulkisHoly - I agree it should be a different version, not saying it should share continuity.

I’m saying some themes are just too iconic to abandon. The Raimi Spider-Man theme wasn’t an iconic definitive theme in the same way Williams superman theme was - ask a random person on the street to whistle superman and that’s what they’ll do. It perfectly Embodies the comics character better than any subsequent theme possibly could so there’s no point in getting rid of it

Both sentiments are debatable and just your opinion.

Who’s to say someone can’t write a Superman theme equal or better?
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 7/10/2023, 12:39 AM
@HulkisHoly - guess we’ll find out, I’m looking forward to whatever the score is but I do except some Williams theme in there knowing how big a fan Gunn is of Donner

He didn’t say anything about Superman by REM! But given Super Pets already used it, maybe it’s for the best that Gunn doesn’t go that tongue and cheek. Have a strong feeling this soundtrack is gonna have some Elvis Costello tho

@WEAPONXOXOXO - same with the new Superboy book, Connor Kent that is. (Hope he gets a new name at the end of the book, calling Jon Kent Superman while Connor is called Superboy is a bit condescending).

I thought he was gonna say 'no Hooked On A Feeling' and I was like 'well yeah, of course'

So James Gunn engages in ageism. It is a good thing he is not casting for the Mission Impossible films or it would be starring Jacob Tremblay

A decent age for a Supes a few years in. I was picturing 28 or 29, but what's 2 more years. I think early 30s is when you really start to settle into legitimate adulthood ad reconcile with who you are as a a matured person.

Let's say he started in his late twenties, which tracks mostly when compared to the comics. He started about 25 there; post-Crisis comic book stories had his adventures beginning at age 28 so this is in line with that even. 31 is a nice sweet spot where permanence and establishing the status quo begins.

@GhostDog - Thats a nice breakdown. One commenter said we care too much about the age here which I agree with. I care more about how he looks then his actual age. David will look 20 something in the movie and at age 32 in real life gives him many years to play the man of steel.

the most interesting age for superman is when he is going public... left behind are the school days and initially exploring his powers... now he has to balance being the hero, while holding down a job and all the duality/dichotomy associated with it.

HA! Can you imagine Supes flying around with Lois in his arms, and the lyrics: "Til then just sit your drunk ass on that [frick]in' runway ho" playing? This was an option? 🤣🤣🤣
