UPDATED — IT'S CONFIRMED: Superman Gets a Villainess in Man of Steel!

According to Deadline and,now Variety, German actress Antje Traue has been cast in the villainess role in Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel.

Says Deadline, "Since Michael Shannon is playing General Zod, might Traue be playing his accomplice, Ursa, who appeared in the first two Superman films? Traue starred with Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid in Pandorum, and she is currently in Sweden shooting the Peter Flinth-directed Nobels Testament."

UPDATE FROM VARIETY:

Traue is confirmed for Man of Steel, with Variety also noting that she will be portraying the villainous Faora. Says the trade publication, "There are multiple Faoras in the Superman universe, so it remains unclear which one Traue has been tapped to play. The first Faora, Faora Hu-Ul, was introduced in Action Comics #471 as a beautiful Kryptonian woman with an intense unexplained hatred for all men. She was an expert at the Kryptonian martial art of Horo-Kanu, which utilizes pressure points on the Kryptonian body and made her a dangerous foe for Superman to fight in hand-to-hand combat. In fact, he was forced to flee from their first encounter. That said, it's more likely that Traue will be playing the version of Faora that debuted in Action Comics #779 as a Pokolistanian aide of General Zod. That character was an orphan metahuman with the ability to disrupt molecular bonds, which allowed her to create a mutagenic virus that served as the linchpin of Zod's plan."

Superman II:2? Is that what we're going for here, Zack? If that's the case we need some big dim-witted white guy to play Non...Tom Arnold step right up! Will we ever see a Superman movie that does not pay homage to or re-invent anything that Christopher Reeves did? I love those movies because they were original for their time. Give me Brainiac, Bizarro, Parasite, or even Mxyzptlk and keep Luthor only as a secondary character this time around.

@plasticman: Just because a movie has the same villains doesn't mean it will be the same, or even a similar, movie. Both Batman and The Dark Knight had The Joker and they weren't the same. Both The Hulk and The Incredible Hulk had General Thunderbolt Ross and they weren't the same. Both Batman Forever and The Dark Knight had Two-Face and they weren't the same. X-men and X3 both had Magneto and they weren't the same. You get yet? Besides were not even sure if Zod will be the villain or just appear in a flashback, or at the beginning of the movie, on Krypton.

@RamonSuarez- You don't know where Supes came from? Check out the animated series and that should get you up to speed. Not every comic book movie needs to, or even should, follow the reboot process that Nolan took Batman down. Those were great films, but once you start to follow a pattern people catch on. The Superman mythos has already been played out on the big screen, we don't need all of that again. Flashbacks are good, I won't disagree on that, but from every bit that we are being given about this movie nothing is new and there is no attempt to develop a truly orginal storyline here.

it's a damn shame about the lack of Ursa. Those first two Superman movies have yet to be topped, in terms of CBMs. I quite like how it's going back to the comics, with Faora, but still... URSA!
Maybe they'll have both Ursa AND Faora? They are two seperate characters now, in New Earth continuity, since the Donner and Johns' Last Son arc.

@RamonSuarez I agree with you....Krypton needs to be rediscovered in the films. WHere they speak kryptonian and not english. Id like to see this next film show some culture. im excited that they will be showing Krypton as a more natural environment instead of all krystal or ice but your right....there needs to be a better exploration of it in this next film before bringing about the likes of the kryptonian villains to light.

If thy do brainiac then that would be an opportunity to mention how Superman has a cousin named KARA since he is the one that took Kandor.

She's pretty hot. And her acting is solid, I suppose...

But regardless, keep Lex Luthor out of this movie by any means necessary. I'm getting really tired of him and the whole "Lex has kryptonite, Woe is me" storyline.

Sound stupid....Zod and Ursa. Guess we're getting a superman II remake. Thats why should've just continued from Superman Returns. Now we have to start all over and see basiclly what we've already seen. No new villians like Braniac or Bizzaro, so dumb. Thank god for smallville...love it or hate it, at least they showed live action villians we have seen before

I could see her playing a villain. The more casting news we get of Zod and his cronies, the less likely we'll get a new villain.

@WittySupername Good point. But with the way the Superman legal battle is going on... we may not get a sequel for a long time.

Umm..since when was this marked as a trilogy. Last Snyder said it is a one movie deal and who knows if there is anything else following this one.
